The Elite 75 took place on the campus of Umass-Lowell on Friday afternoon bringing together the top talent New England has to offer. All of the area’s top AAU programs were represented including, but not limited t,o Expressions Elite, BABC, NE Playaz, Mass Rivals, CBC and the NY Lightning. I had the chance to catch up with players from all of those programs regarding their recruitment since the unlimited contact period started on June 15th. Starting with Expressions Elite, NBE Basketball will be profiling players from each of these six programs over the next few days.
Expressions Elite was well represented at this year’s Elite 75 led by arguably the top 2 performers at the entire event in Jared Terrell (2014 SG) and Abdul-Malik Abu (2014 PF). Both were dominant in early skill development as well as full court 5 on 5 game action. Before getting started on their stand out days, both stars caught up with NBE regarding their burgeoning recruitment.
Jared Terrell (2014 SG) - Terrell’s newest scholarship offer came from Connecticut to join his impressive list including Cincinnati, Iowa, Iowa State, Rutgers, Miami, Florida, Providence, Boston College and St. John’s. He said that he’s been in contact with everyone on that list since June 15th acknowledging Cincinnati as the school that’s been coming at him the hardest in that time. In addition to these offers, Terrell has heard from the Kansas staff recently as well. They have yet to extend a scholarship offer but are planning to watch Terrell in July and are actively recruiting him. He declined to mention any favorites in his recruitment at this time stating that it’s way too early to tell. Terrell plans to sit down with his parents after the AAU season and discuss potentially trimming his list but for now he is still adding offers, not narrowing things down.
Abdul-Malik Abu (2014 PF) – Abu continued his breakout AAU season with another stellar performance at the Elite 75. He had the best day of any big man in attendance showing off his blossoming inside-outside game. Abu’s recruitment is starting to reap the benefits of his dominant play as he now holds scholarship offers from Providence, Iowa State, Michigan State, Temple, and Rhode Island. Other schools that have been in constant contact with Abu since June 15th but have yet to extend a scholarship offer include Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, Missouri and Notre Dame. Connecticut has also been in contact with Abu’s AAU coach to express interest but have yet to contact him directly. As for what Abu is looking for in an eventual destination, his needs are quite simple. He’s looking for a chance to play and a team that is focused on defense and winning.
In addition to the top draws, I was able to catch up with a variety of other Expressions stars that had strong performances on Friday.
Alec Brennan (2014 PF) – In early 1 on 1 drills Brennan was among the most successful big men at scoring the ball. His impressive footwork combined with a soft shooting touch made him tough for stop for any and all defenders. Schools that have taken notice and been in contact include Harvard, Lehigh, Hartford, Duquesne, Rhose Island, Miami, Iowa State, UMass, and Wake Forest. An excellent student with a 3.8 GPA, the early feel is that it will take a high academic institution from a larger conference to pry Brennan out of the Ivy League. Academics are a huge factor in his recruitment and will likely dictate the types of schools that end up on his list in the future.
Damion Smith (2014 SG) – New to the Expressions program after coming aboard a little over a month ago, the former BABC player already has plenty of Atlantic-10 interest. Duquesne has extended a scholarship offer with URI, UMass, and Charlotte all being in contact as well.
Elijah Rogers (2014 PG) – Rogers heads the ship for the 16U Expressions Red team and the 5’10” floor general has some local schools already taking notice. He has heard from both Northeastern and Hartford recently but should expect more schools to become involved after July. He also had an impressive performance at Boston College prospect camp recently and the coaching staff definitely took notice. They have yet to reach out since camp ended but made it clear they were intrigued by what they saw.
