CLEVELAND MELVIN UPDATE: DUKE, OTHERS MAKE INQUIRY

March 12, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment

After backing off verbal commitment to UConn, Notre Dame Prep forward expanding recruiting list

Baltimore native and current Notre Dame Prep forward Cleveland Melvin recently re-opened his recruitment, backing off a verbal commitment he made to Connecticut in mid-November of 2009.

The Huskies had recruited the 6-foot-8, 210-pound Melvin as a power forward and that was their long range vision for him. With the additional verbal commitment of 6-foot-7 small forward Roscoe Smith of Oak Hill Academy in the class of 2010, Melvin had second thoughts about his decision as he has been working on expanding his game this season to have the chance to play wing at the college level.

“I just wanted to reopen my recruitment process back up and have the oppurtunity to play more on the wing when I go to college,” Melvin told NBE Basketball Report this week.

Now Melvin is receiving interest from a variety of new schools, including an ACC power, and has plenty of schools on his list to give him some interesting options as a potential spring signee for one college. NATIONAL PREP CHAMPIONSHIP – FINAL DAY RUNDOWN

March 11, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment

by PAT STEVENS – A pair of Big East recruits capped off their seasons with a New England championship and now a national title as CJ Fair and Austin Carroll helped Brewster Academy defeated Northfield Mount Hermon in the finals of the National Prep Championships.

Brewster would rally from down 15 points in the first half and trade the lead in the second half before heading to overtime where they pulled away for the 79-76 win.

BIG EAST SIGNEES IN ACTION

CJ Fair (Syracuse/6-7 WF/Brewster Academy) – Fair saved his best for last as he scored a number of big baskets in key moments. He’s a zone-buster for the Brewster team with his ability to operate consistently in the gaps and finish around the rim. Often times he elevated over the defense for scores with his high, slingshot release that goes well with his lift and size. However, most impressive is his effort. Considering he’s fit to be a wing but with his skills to serve as an undersized-four man inside, he’s gone to work and gives the team what it needs consistently when we’ve seen him this year. He scored 13 and 11 in the prior two victories and finished with 19 in his last game with his family also on hand.

Austin Carroll (Rutgers/6-3 SG/Brewster Academy) – He had the chance to win the game when Will Barton couldn’t get enough space for a step-back jumper and got caught in the air, dropping it off to him nearby in the corner. It was a tough spot to make something happen and he nearly scored on a runner that would have been the game-winner. His first two games were tough outings from beyond the arc but he hit several in key stretches come the championship. He made a difference as a help defender and in team defense, showing both good anticipation and timing with a number of strips around the basket along with stepping in for several charges throughout the two days. Rutgers’ head coach Fred Hill and assistant Darren Savino watched him in the championship alongside his family.

Isaiah Epps (Pittsburgh/6-2 PG/Hargrave Military Academy) – Epps has a necessary weapon for the point guard package and it’s a reliable long ball, which he used for two big hoops in Hargrave’s second half rally that eventually fell short against NMH. His toughness shined through down the stretch with will to take and make those big shots. He was a tough cover for the slower guards and finished with a game-high 20 points along with some active defense in the press that forced a number of turnovers during their comeback attempt.

Ron Giplaye (Providence/6-7 PF/Notre Dame Prep) – Giplaye had an average outing in the opening round loss to NMH. A signature rebounder, getting back on defense was an issue for he and his teammates. Offensively, a bright spot was his ability to go to both hands in a crowd. Gerard Coleman stuck around to watch him. He had nine points in the opening round loss to Northfield Mount Hermon.

Gerard Coleman (Providence/6-4 SG/Tilton) – Coleman played within the flow of the offense in the first half but Hargrave jumped Tilton and took a big lead into the half of the opening round matchup. The second half he was more aggressive with the floor opening up and allowing for plenty of his typical scores in transition, but he got plenty of hoops taking his man off the dribble as well. While a majority of the second half both teams pushed the ball off both misses and makes, his drive game was superb when in the half court. Inside, he avoided contact with his ability to change direction on the bounce or adjust mid-air. A quick spin move into a leaner/push shot is in his repertoire. More often than not though, he would get himself all the way to the rim and either convert or head to the free throw line. His jump shot is still a work in progress. Several were short when the defender (quick guards of similar build Mardracus Wade and Lorenzo Brown) was able to get a hand up but he also knocked down a contested pair as well. Condition-wise he’s in great shape for a track meet like the game turned into but the mental of giving so much on offense and essentially trading baskets in a big comeback attempt probably took away from his active defense he’s capable of. He did his best to overcome a slow start as a team and finished with 43 points, 29 coming in the second half.

BIG EAST COACHES IN ATTENDANCE

Rutgers’ Fred Hill and Darren Savino were on hand along with Connecticut’s Pat Sellers and Providence’s Pat Skerry.

MIKE TAYLOR BASKING IN PSAL CHAMPIONSHIP

March 10, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment

Boys & Girls junior guard shines on MSG floor with 25 points leading ‘Roos to first title since 1979

They have been close before, but this time the Boys & Girls High School Kangaroos finished the job with a 55-50 victory over Cardozo to give the Brooklyn high school their first PSAL championship since 1979. It was their third trip in the last four years to the AA finals and the win made Ruth Lovelace the first female coach to lead a PSAL team to the boy’s title.

Junior (2011) guard Mike Taylor led the ‘Roos with 25 points and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard, who is being pursued by the majority of the Big East, understood the historical aspects of the win, relaying the weight of the accomplishments to NBE last night while returning to Madison Square Garden to take in the 2010 Big East Tournament as a fan.

“It was a good win on Saturday,” said Taylor. “We were down 10 at halftime, we just came out halftime and played hard. The last time we won was in 1979, so it was a 31 year drought. This was Coach Ruth Lovelace’s first championship.”

ANGEL NUNEZ IMPRESSED WITH SYRACUSE VISIT, TALKS RECRUITING

March 5, 2010 by NBE Blogger · 1 Comment

2011 forward prospect has checked out several Big East schools, wants to see Pitt, Kentucky, UL and UConn

by JEFF BORZELLO

A record crowd was in the Carrier Dome last Saturday night to watch Syracuse knock off Villanova and take control of the Big East standings.

The electric atmosphere that was heightened by the ESPN Gameday crew and an NCAA on-campus crowd of 34,616 added to the excitment and the Orange staff took full advantage by using the festivities as a recruiting tool bringing in several highly touted recruits.

One of those in attendance was 2011 prospect Angel Nunez, a 6-7 native New Yorker now playing at Winchendon Prep (Mass.).

“It was fun. The atmosphere was overwhelming,” Nunez said. “I went with [Winchendon teammate] Khem Birch.”

Nunez talked to NBE last night about his trip to Syracuse and his thoughts on recruiting, which included his interest in visiting other schools such as Pitt, Kentucky, Louisville and UConn in the future and what he will be looking for in his future college home. Here come’s UConn! Jim Calhoun has directed the Huskies to three straight wins just as it looked like they were headed towards missing ghe NCAA Tournament. Now last year’s Final Four participant and #1 seed is right in the mix of the bubble talk. Work is still needed, but suddenly a season left for dead just 9 days ago after an ‘embarassment’ is very much alive with a team that could be very dangerous in March.

Three games on the Big East schedule tonight with the battle of Jersey bewteen SHU and RU taking palce at the ROC. A very big game on the conference schedule features Louisville and Georgetown as the two teams have been heading in opposite directions in recent weeks, but the Hoyas are still possessing a lofty national rank and the Cards are hoping to get off the bubble, even though it is Georgetown looking up at UL in the league standings. Syracuse looks to avoid looking ahead to ‘Nova this weekend when they travel to Providence, who has been run through the wringer of the Big East schedule.

In other news, Notre Dame has to go deeper on the bench that Mike Brey might be comfortable with whil Luke Harangody has been out. Now, it looks like Harangody will be out longer than anticpated. The heat is rising against Mick Cronin as UC stumbles again down the stetch. With four years left on his contract, it has the Cincinnati athletic department in a tough spot. Of course, making a few free throws and this situation could be looking MUCH better. Buzz Williams is back to his aerodynamic hair style after growing out a little fuzz during a five-game winning streak. Mouphtau Yarous is adjusting to life on the Philly Main Line and hopes to make the impact he had hoped before this season is done.

In recruiting, Maurice Walker and Gorgui Dieng are 2010 uncomitted big men that Big East schools are actively recruiting into the spring signing period.

NATIONAL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY CLASSIC RECRUITING NOTES

February 22, 2010 by NBE Blogger · 3 Comments

BY JEFF BORZELLO

FORT WASHINGTON (MD) – With state playoffs starting around the country, there are not many inter-state tournaments left in the season. However, one under-the-radar event left to play was the NCA Classic at National Christian Academy in Maryland. The set-up was three high schools from North Carolina coming up to play three high schools in Maryland – Progressive Christian (Md.) vs. Mt. Zion Academy (N.C.), Princeton Day School (Md.) vs. Christian Faith Center Academy (N.C.) and National Christian (Md.) vs. Kestrel Heights (N.C.). Although it did not receive much attention, there were plenty of talented and highly-touted players at the event.

Players at the event gave NBE school lists that included Georgetown, Seton Hall, West Virginia, Providence, Connecticut, Pittsburgh as well as schools from the ACC, Big 12, SEC, PAC 10, Big 10 and more. 2011 NYC G/F JERMAINE SANDERS LIKES THE BIG EAST

February 21, 2010 by NBE Blogger · 7 Comments

And the Big East is liking him back with several school offering a scholarship

While Rice (NYC) High School junior Jermaine Sanders does not seem to have a big reputation nationally, that is not the case in the northeast among high-major college coaches.

Sanders is a 6-foot-5 swing man/small forward that can simply score the ball in a lot of different ways. Against Westchester (CA) High School last month at the Primetime Shootout in Morgantown (WV), he was deadly from beyond the three-point line. He’s also a solidly built kid who should continue to get stronger and shows the ability to share the ball and defend within a team concept.

Last weekend at the Primetime Shootout in Trenton (NJ), NBE’s Matt Whitfield caught up with the rising star in the 2011 recruiting class to get his thoughts on his recruitment…

OMAR CALHOUN DRAWING COACHES, OFFERS

February 19, 2010 by NBE Blogger · 5 Comments

Even though they are just sophomores in high school, the class of 2012 is starting to take shape and it is looking to be an impressive class in the Northeast. One player that is certain to draw a lot of attention is Christ the King (NYC) guard Omar Calhoun.

Last weekend in Trenton (NJ), Calhoun and his CTK teammates hit the big stage as the Royals took on undefeated Half Hollow Hills West of Long Island (NY) in the Primetime Shootout at the Sun National Bank Center Sunday afternoon.

The Royals entered the contest as the NY Post’s #1 boy’s basketball team in their NYC rankings, but HHHW was too much on this afternoon, holding on for a 73-69 win. Calhoun was fantastic, as expected, finishing with a game-high 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the contest. Calhoun’s father, Omar Sr., also caught up with NBE to talk about recruiting, summer plans and how deep the family cares for the game of basketball…

Three games last night on the Big East schedule with Notre Dame putting up a big fight at Louisville without injured star Luke Harangody. However, Samardo Samuels was too much inside for the Irish to handle. west Virginia bounced back from a pair of losses to keep Providence on their slide and Seton Hall won their first road game since Novmember by getting past ice-cold St. John’s. The bad news for SHU is they might miss Jeremy Hazell for up to a week after he suffered a gash on his hand in last night’s win.

Tonight an ESPN Big East doubleheader with long-time rivals Georgetown and Syracuse reuniting at the Verizon Center and new rivals Pitt and Marquette battling in Milwaukee.

BIG SEASON BRINGS BIG INTEREST FOR JAYLEN BOND

February 11, 2010 by NBE Blogger · 8 Comments

Plymouth-Whitemarsh junior forward is starring on nationally ranked squad, picking up Big East interest

Last spring the NBE Basketball Report took notice of an athletic and powerfully built class of 2011 forward named Jaylen Bond at the IS8 Spring League in NYC. Bond made the trip with several other Philadelphia area players with a team called East Coast Elite out of Delaware. The newcomers to the IS8 action more than held their own and Bond finsihed up the spring proving ground league as a player to take notice of.

Now, with his Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School team enjoying a tremendous season, currently 21-1 and the District 1 and PIAA state title favorites, his college recruiting profile is beginning to kick into high gear. Along with some of the top local Philadelphia programs, several Big East schools are also taking notice of the 6-foot-7, 215-lb forward’s multi-faceted game and picturing him in a Big East uniform.

Bond took some time out from his busy schedule to chat with the NBE Basketball Report on the big season with P-W and to update us on his recruiting…

Last night was a devastating blow to UConn’s NCAA chances as they saw an opportunity for a big road win slip away. While the game was a terrific college basketball game, most will be talking about a late timeout granted to Syracuse when it looked like they were not in possession of the basketball when it was granted.

Tonight is two important games for postseason chances of Seton Hall, Notre Dame and Louisville with St. John’s trying to play spoiler when the Cards come to the Garden. Of course, with Rick Pitino returning home to NY it creates a buzz and this time it is rumors that he is interested in the New Jersey Nets coaching position.

Elsewhere, a couple recruiting articles centering around Kadeem Jack and Derrick Randall for readers to check out as well as a look at Friday’s Backyard Brawl which promises to be interesting as the teams meet for the second time in just 9 days.

MYLES DAVIS: LOOKING OUTSIDE OF THE GARDEN STATE?

2011 NJ guard discusses recruiting options, desire to play college ball with friend Tyrone Johnson

by Matt Whitfield

At the recent Newark Invitational, St. Peter’s Prep junior (class of 2011) guard Myles Davis put on quite a show on a pretty big stage. Playing in the Prudential Center, aka ‘The Rock’, Davis poured in a game-high 31 points during an overtime loss to Christ the King.

Davis showed off his sweet shooting stroke from deep, burying four three-pointers on the afternoon, including two straight to pull his Jersey City team to a 57-all tie with 4:24 in the fourth quarter. His 12 points in the final quarter basically carried his team and willed them to overtime. Davis was forced to miss more than two minutes of OT while suffering from leg cramps and CTK was able to take advantage and hold on for the 75-72 win.

OMAR CALHOUN PICKING UP ELITE RECRUITING INTEREST

2012 NYC prospect seeing UK, UNC, UCLA, ‘Zona, etc joing Big East schools on his trail

by MATT WHITFIELD

The 2010 Newark Invitational at the Prudential Center drew some of the top teams from Jersey and destinations far and near. One team that traveled from over the river to compete in Newark (NJ) was Christ the King of NYC. CTK was matched up against Jersey City (NJ) power St. Peter’s Prep and the game lived up to expectations as the boys from New York City came away with a 75-72 overtime victory.

Also living up to expectations was Christ the King sophomore forward Omar Calhoun. The 6-foot-4 sophomore guard put on a show in his match-up against highly regarded St. Peter’s Prep junior (2011) guard Myles Davis, both showing why they have bright futures on the basketball court.

Omar Calhoun (21) and Myles Davis (15) could meet again in the Big East in the future (photo credit: Philip Hall/NY Post)

For his part, Calhoun finished with 23 points, displaying a high basketball IQ for a young player and showed off an accurante and picture-esque jump shot, extending out past the three-point arc where he was four of eight on the afternoon. Calhoun has a solid size and a good frame to add more weight before getting to college. His lack of strength and weight made some of his opportunities in the lane more difficult to finish in this contest.

BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (2/2/2010)

Lots of good stuff to get to today. Big Monday action last night had two teams with much need for a win and Louisville held serve and defeated a slumping UConn, 82-69. Tonight features Villanova (against Seton Hall) and Syracuse (against Providence) in action on their home courts looking to defend their lofty national rankings. Rutgers looks to build momentum following their first Big East win of the season from over the weekend and deal a damaging blow to St. John’s season tonight at the RAC.

In other Big East news, speculation on Pitt moving to the Big 10 looks to be WAY TOO premature. Right now, the Panthers are looking to stay positive and shake themselves out of a rut that has led to three losses in four games, but things get tougher with WVU on the schedule next. Notre Dame looks to be in a slide that is very familiar to Irish followers of a year before.

In recruiting, Pitt and Providence are involved with a young Chicago prospect, Anthony Wroten Jr updates his top five schools and Justin Coleman also lists his favorites. Adam Zagoria also has a very nice story on Rice HS junior guard Jermaine Sanders and his handling of a personal tragedy from last fall.

Also, it might be another month and a half away, but our 2010 Big East Tournament & Tickets page has the links needed for Big East basketball fans to purchase tickets to any or all of the 2010 Big East Tournament sessions.
