JULY IS A BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR KAISON RANDOLPH & MARK WILLIAMS

June 29, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

On the college basketball recruiting trail July is a month unlike any other. Scholarships are earned at all levels of the sport during AAU tournaments and exposure camps as thousands of Division 1-A coaches hit the trail looking for the next generation of players for the programs they head or assist with. Stories of unknown players putting it together at the right time to earn a free college education are numerous. While at NBE Basketball Report we spend most of our time following the high-major world of recruiting, the real grind this month is at the mid-major and lower lever. Assistant coaches are scouring gyms across the country and when they find a player they like tucked away in some event nobody knows about, they hold their breath they do not have the big breakout at AAU Nationals or a bigger event later in the month.

The story of Jeremy Lamb, who was picked in the NBA Lottery portion of the 2012 NBA Draft last night, has been a story retold several times this week. Entering the Peach Jam in July 2009 Lamb was a coveted mid-major recruit. However a big week on a big stage in front of college coaches pushed his recruitment higher, much to the frustration of the mid-major assistants that had been working on him for months prior.

Who will be those stories this July? In just two weeks the stories will begin to be written once more. Two players hoping they find themselves as the main subjects are Kaison Randolph and Mark Williams. NBE caught up with each recently as they prepare to embark on the July recruiting period.

Star Watch: RaShawn Powell
–”when the ball is in his hands, he can do whatever needs to be done on offense”

According to the Ballers staff, Powell holds offers from Central Florida, Memphis, Mississippi State, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Murray State, Illinois State, UMASS, Miami and Seton Hall. Schools such as Alabama, Florida State and Cincinnati are also heavily in the mix as well.

Hurricanes got a good one in Burnett: Deandre Burnett will bring another ball handler and scoring threat. The Miami-commit is a great scorer and can create his own opportunities in various ways.

Summer Breakout Candidate: Tyriefe Beard
–The Ballers staff identified Beard as a sleeper that coaches will definitely notice this summer who is not getting alot of attention right now.

Youngster on the Rise: Dwayne Bacon
–Big guard is a member of the Class of 2015 and already has Viginia Tech and Florida State offers.

Mompremier & Ndoye Seeing Increased Recruiting Attention: Class of 2013, 6’9+ F Wadly Mompremier is rapidly improving and his recruitment has rapidly increased this spring. The Ballers staff informs us that Old Dominion, Northeastern, Florida Atlantic, James Madison and Jacksonville have offered with interest coming from Akron, Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Florida Golf Coast and Alabama.

In the case of 6-foot-11 C Fallou Ndoye, his recruiting also picked up and he landed an ACC offer from Virginia Tech, which adds to the previous offers that he had already from Nevada, Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville and James Madison. Schools such as Cincinnati, Clemson, Mississippi, UCF, Miami, Akron, Memphis and Texas have shown interest and will likely keep an eye on him this July.

BOSWORTH: NATIONAL PREP SCHOOL SHOWCASE WRAP-UP (TOP PERFORMERS)

November 22, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By Brian Bosworth, National Recruiting Analyst

Now that the National Prep Showcase has concluded it’s time to take a moment and digest everything that I witnessed in New Haven this weekend. One thing that jumps out is that the talent level in New England is at an all time high. While many players are imports from other areas of the country a large part of rosters on New England prep times are made up of local talent. Most notably, Nerlens Noel in 2013 and Noah Vonleh in 2014 both have a chance to become the top player in their class nationwide. These two separated themselves from everyone else at this event both with their current production and with their long term potential.

Past those top two, Ricardo Ledo deserves more recognition for his performance on Friday night. Ledo’s ability to score has never been questioned but his intangibles and whether or not he is a winner have long been debated. Against La Jolla Prep he not only scored from everywhere on the floor but he proved to be the vocal leader of a talent rich South Kent team. He specifically seems to have taken on somewhat of a mentor role for talented junior Chris Thomas. According to South Kent head coach Kelvin Jefferson Ledo has been everything he could have asked for and more both on the floor and in the locker room. He has taken Thomas under his wing in a sense and has been an incredible positive influence. If this progression continues, Ed Cooley landed an even bigger star than already thought.

RECRUITING NOTEBOOK: ANTHONY BENNETT HOLDING LIST STEADY, CHINONSO OBOKOH TAKING VISITS & SCHOOLS WATCH YOUNG LAMONTA STONE

September 20, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The big news of the college basketball recruiting world was delivered by St. Anthony’s senior guard Kyle Anderson who ended the speculation of his college destination with a simple announcement via twitter:

RT @KyleAnderson5 -Had a great family meeting. I’ve decided to be a UCLA BRUIN!!

Anderson’s announcement came on the eve of his birthday, the planned date of his college decision. Seton Hall (tickets) head coach Kevin Willard had made one last pitch to Anderson and his family with an in-home visit, but it was not enough in the end for the Pirates to land the recruiting coup of the early Fall.

While the Anderson story was unfolding, NBE was also able to get recruiting updates on ’12 forward Anthony Bennett, ’13 big man Chinonso Obokoh and ’15 point guard LaMonta Stone II.
