Newark (NJ) guard in 2012 class is looking for respect as one of best in his class

Perhaps overlooked and underrated because he doesn’t play at one of Northern New Jersey’s perennial Top 25 USA Today programs, Tariq Carey feels he deserves some respect. Carey is an active guard with good athleticism and size for a rising junior. The Newark (NJ) Eastside product plays hard on both sides of the floor and has really improved his all-around. He has an ability to get into the lane and finish or distribute. Carey can score with contact at the rim and showed a much improved ability to connect from three-point range on the AAU circuit when NBE saw him with the NJ Playaz 16U team. Defensively, he is very aggressive and is adept at racking up steals and starting fast breaks.
With all that ability and an impressive list of schools involved in his recruitment, Carey is scratching his head when he looks at top 100 rankings around the internet.

ORLANDO AAU UPDATE: PART VI

The hectic month of July is winding down. The championships of the 17-U National AAU tournament in Orlando has moved into bracket play today and the 16-U national championships have quarterfinal play underway as this story is posted.
The beginning of pool play saw some completel blowouts in the 17-U pools, but some good performances also shined through.

MARCUS PAIGE DRAWING BIG-TIME COACHES IN ORLANDO

2012 point guard out of IA has been a must-see player this week for coaches looking for a floor general
Marcus Paige has had a great spring and summer and when NBE has seen him on the court he has been impressive. Word is essentially out on the class of 2012 point guard who hails from Maron (IA) and attends Linn Marr Community High School. Playing with the Martin Brothers AAU program, a virtual who’s who of college coaches in Orlando checked him out for themselves.
In a class many consider to be a down year for point guards during early evaluations, Page has elevated himself as one of the top floor generals in the class of juniors-to-be. Based on his play in Orlando and throughout the spring and summer, and by the top head coaches watching him here, expect the 6-foot Paige to be among the most highly sought after in the Midwest and nationally.

NIKE EYBL PEACH JAM: DAY THREE

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – If Tuesday was the day when the stars came out, with big-time performances from Mike Gilchrist, Anthony Davis, Austin Rivers, Marquis Teague and Brad Beal, Wednesday was the time to showcase some lesser-known talents from the class of 2012. There were only four sessions of U-17 games, with four sessions of U-16 contests. The playoffs also kicked off during the night session for each age group, with Team Takeover, BABC, St. Louis Eagles and Spiece – the group winners – advancing to play Metro Hawks, Team Final, Oakland Soldiers and Boo Williams, the runners-up in each group. In U-16, group winners Team Takeover, Georgia Stars, BABC and Memphis YOMCA squared off. With the night session featuring all playoff games, the semifinals in U-17 and finals in U-16 are set for tomorrow. Thursday will see Team Takeover take on Team Final and the St. Louis Eagles face Spiece in U-17 action, while BABC and Georgia Stars battle for the U-16 title.

NIKE EYBL PEACH JAM: DAY TWO

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – The finals of the inaugural NIKE Elite Youth Basketball League at the NIKE Peach Jam continued on Tuesday, as the 24 teams battled to finish in the top two spots in each group, which are the only places to advance. By the end of the day, only two teams – Team Takeover DC and the Oakland Soldiers – were undefeated, but plenty of clubs were still in contention for a playoff berth. Surprisingly, the regular-season champs, the NJ Playaz, were only 2-2 through two days and are unlikely to advance. Howard Pulley and Each One Teach One, also pool winners, are both 1-3. The heated competition to finish in the top two led to a great day two of action.
There are evals of players such as Mikael Hopkins, Amir Williams, Kyle Anderson, Anthony Davis, George Fant, AJ Hammons, Jevon Thomas and more along with recruiting updates from Trey Burke, who lists a top three, Jarnell Stokes, James Robinson, Justin Anderson, Jerami Grant, Kevin Johnson, who has two leaders, and many, many more from Day Two of the Nike EYBL championship pool play.

NIKE EYBL PEACH JAM: DAY ONE

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – Annually, the best event of the summer is the NIKE Peach Jam – a collection of 24 of the best NIKE-sponsored AAU teams in one spot. This year, it took on added importance, as it was the culmination of a four-event tournament that spanned three months and four cities. The top 20 teams from the Elite Youth Basketball League in Hampton, Va., Houston and Los Angeles joined four wildcard teams and headed to the Riverview Park Activities Center in North Augusta, S.C. In other words, the best event got even better. Throw in a U-16 division with 16 of the best teams in the country, and the Peach Jam continued to stand above the rest. CLEVELAND – After a fairly lackluster experience at the LeBron James Skills Academy – aside from the hype of having James there, of course – the 75 or so players from that camp traveled about 40 minutes north to Cleveland State University for two days of tournament-style games. The players, broken into eight teams, competed in two games each before entering the playoffs. It was far easier to evaluate the prospects in the game-setting than it was in the drills and the controlled scrimmages.
While our attention is now squarely on the finals of the Nike Elite Yough Basketball League being played at the Peach Jam in North Augusta (SC), we take our final look back at last week’s King City Classic. Previously, in our King City Classic Update (Part A) we took a look at Big East commits such as Wayne Blackshear, Tyrone Johnson, Michael Carter-Williams and James Price and their performances when we were watching. LEBRON JAMES SKILLS ACADEMY RECRUITING NOTES: PART I

AKRON, Ohio – While most of the top college coaches and AAU teams were in Indianapolis to start the July live period, 75 of the best high school players in the classes of 2011 and 2012 – and one from the class of 2013 – convened at the University of Akron for the LeBron James Skills Academy. It was the culmination of four separate skills academies over the past weeks: those of Deron Williams, Paul Pierce, Kevin Durant and Amar’e Stoudemire. It was a true camp setting, with dozens of drills, but there was one noticeable difference: the King himself, LeBron James, showed up to play pick-up with the players. That was arguably the highlight of the event, as there was not too much to glean from the campers based on various passing and dribbling drills. However, there was plenty of recruiting notes and updates to pass along as NBE caught up with players such as Jabarie Hinds, Ricardo Ledo, Ricardo Gathers, JaKarr Sampson, Branden Dawson, Trevor Lacey, Nick Faust and many more for the absolute latest in their recruiting situations in detail as they talk leaders, visits, offers and more.

NBPA TOP 100 EVALUATIONS CONTINUED (SG/SF)

Continuing on with our NBPA Top 100 camp player evaluations and recruiting notes we move into the category of shooting guards and/or small forwards. After opening up the series with a look at the star-studded field of point and combo guards on Saturday (see article here for a look at 11 guards that caught our eye off the bat) we move to some of the top wings. Players such as Wayne Blackshear, Mike Gbinijie, PJ Hairston only enhanced their reputations while Nick Faust, Ben McLemore and Nik Stauskas either made a name for themselves or cemented their status as high-major players. The camp also can be a valuable learning tool as some extremely talented players saw firsthand the competition will be there each and every day at the highest levels and we look at a few that should have better days ahead.

RUMBLE IN THE BRONX: SATURDAY RUNDOWN

BRONX, N.Y. – At first glance, the 2010 Rumble in the Bronx seemed like it had a loaded field. All the top teams from the New York/New Jersey area and several of the best national teams, including the Southern Kings, Dallas Mustangs and Franchise All-Stars, were expected to show up in New York City this weekend. However, with three other major events going on this weekend, including Adidas Nations, CP3 Point Guard Camp and the NIKE Hoop Jamboree, the individual talent was watered-down. Studs who missed the event included Michael Gilchrist, LeBryan Nash, Shannon Scott, Dai-Jon Parker, Rakeem Christmas, Kyle Anderson, Alex Murphy, Wannah Bail, DaJuan Coleman, Kuran Iverson and many more. With that said, though, there were still a number of standout players and performances.
Devonta Abron, 2012, Dallas Mustangs: With LeBryan Nash out at Adidas Nations, Abron took over as the go-to-guy for the Mustangs. The athletic, 6-foot-7, lefty big forward can finish very well around the rim and also showed a nice touch from the mid-range. He runs the floor and can catch the ball in transition. Abron showed a few nice moves with his back to the basket and also threw down one of the more impressive dunks of the weekend, over 7-footer Blaise Mbargorba.

Blaise Mbargorba, 2011, NJ Roadrunners: Mbargorba is still developing all facets of his game, but he clearly has potential. The 7-footer is extremely long and has a good build, although he does need to add strength. He can run the floor and is able to finish in transition with dunks at the rim. The athletic Mbargorba is mobile, but he needs to move far better without the ball. Too often, he stood around and did not utilize his size advantage effectively.
Mbargorba, a native of Cameroon who plays at St. Benedict’s, lists Virginia Tech as his current favorite because he likes its basketball and engineering programs. Mbargorba is also being recruited by Boston College, Georgetown, Providence and Columbia.

PERRY ELLIS UPDATE: KANSAS FORWARD SHINES ON AND OFF THE COURT

Elite 2012 prospect is in high demand and has the total package of athletic ability and academics

Whenever Bill Self, John Calipari and Rick Pitino show up to watch one player perform in an open gym, you know you are dealing with someone special.
Special is just one word to describe Perry Ellis, a 6-foot-8 forward from Wichita Heights (Kan.). One of the top players in the class of 2012, Ellis is one of the most highly-recruited prospects in the country. He was named the ESPN Rise National Sophomore of the Year, and has been the Gatorade Player of the Year in Kansas for the past two seasons. Moreover, Ellis averaged 22.2 points and 10.4 rebounds en route to leading Wichita Heights to its second consecutive state championship – the first back-to-back 6A state champ in 16 years.
The aforementioned open gym workout that Ellis had in mid-April drew Kansas State’s Frank Martin, Stanford’s Johnny Dawkins, Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall and assistants from Missouri, Texas A&M and Memphis, in addition to Self, Calipari and Pitino.
“It was really impressive to have that many coaches there at one time,” said Perry’s mother, Fonda Ellis.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Ellis has offers or interest from nearly every big-time school in the nation.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C./DURHAM, N.C. — Duke and North Carolina are usually the main attractions down in the Triangle of Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham, but that was not the case this weekend with the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in town. 64 U-17 teams, 32 U-16 teams and 32 U-15 squads, spread out over 19 courts and 8 locations, it was a recruitnik’s dream.
