23) MALIK SEALY
23. Malik Sealy: St. John’s – (1988-92) Bronx, NY
Four years: 18.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.9 spg, 72.1% FT
Second Team Consensus All-American (1992)
Excellent 6’8” small forward who on offense could take over a game, but also could play excellent defense, pass, and handle the ball.
Sealy was a success from the beginning with 12.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.2 apg, and 1.2 spg as a freshman. As a sophomore his game rose sharply with 18.1 ppg, 6.9 rpg, and 1.7 apg, while hitting on 52.5% of his shots from the field and 74.6% from the line. He also started to show how good he was defensively with 2.2 spg, an excellent number for a 6’8” forward. In his last two seasons, Sealy proved to be one of the best players in the nation. As a junior, Sealy was fabulous with 22.1 ppg , 7.7 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.0 spg, and 74.3% from the line. 1.7 apg, 2.1 spg, 74.3% from the line. As a senior, Sealy proved it was not a fluke by averaging 22.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.0 spg, and a career high 79.3% from the line. The season also ended with Sealy averaging more than two steals a game for the third straight season, a rarity even for elite point guards, and a phenomenal accomplishment for a player his size.
“He was a snake,” says former Boston College star Bill Curley to NBE. “He would always run the baseline and then pop out and hit the 15-17 footer. He lived off of it. He was always weaving in and out and you just couldn’t keep up with him.”
His career point total of 2,395 points are second in school history, and trails the great Chris Mullin by just 45 points. He also is 11th all-time in conference games with 1,165 points, while also finishing 10th all-time in field goals made and 9th all-time in free throws made. Sealy was the 14th overall pick by the Indiana Pacers in the NBA draft, and played with four team, finishing with a career average of 10.1 ppg. But sadly after eight seasons in the league, Sealy was killed by a drunk driver.
