NYC/NJ Singing the Blues? With Rutgers and Seton Hall scuffling along as the only Big East teams without a conference win and St. John’s off to a 1-3 start in conference play, there is a real danger of the three teams in closest proximity to New York City being on the outside looking in at the Big East Tournament this season. Seton Hall has a chance to get a win under their belt on Thursday hosting South Florida and then they have Louisville coming to the ‘Rock’. St. John’s and Rutgers hit the road this week with the Scarlet Knights in Syracuse and at DePaul and the Redstorm going to Morgantown.

Team With Most to Gain? Georgetown. The Hoyas are the conference’s lone unbeaten in Big East play and with a game at Pittsburgh and a home date with Notre Dame, the Hoyas have a chance to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the conference.

Player in the Spotlight? AJ Price, Connecticut. Price has been off to a very good start this season and has a chance to shine this week in home games against Providence and Marquette. The Friars have a strong backcourt, but the injury to Sharaud Curry takes a bit of the bite out of the Friars. Marquette’s backcourt is rightfully hailed as one of the best in the country, a strong week by Price and he could help UConn make a claim as one of the top backcourts in the Big East and nationally.

Learning Curve Syracuse. The Orange will head back to the Carrier Dome licking their wounds from losses at Cincinnati and West Virginia. The Orange looked like a bunch of freshmen on the floor in Sunday’s 20-pt loss at West Virginia with poor shot selection and on-court chemistry. We will see if lesson’s learned have the Orange playing more disciplined and focused this week when they host Rutgers and Villanova.

Respect? Judging by the Power Poll results, Cincinnati and DePaul are still looking for a little more. The Bearcats beat BOTH Syracuse and Villanova last week and have a ROAD win over Louisville, yet, all three teams are ahead of them in the poll. DePaul is also 3-1, but the voters are not convinced.

Last Week’s Power Poll for 1/7/2008 (1st place votes in parenthesis):

1) Georgetown (17): 301 points.
2) Marquette (1): 267 points.
3) Notre Dame: 250 points.
4) Villanova: 221 points.
5) Syracuse: 218 points.
6) West Virginia (1): 214 points.
7) Pittsburgh: 208 points.
8) Connecticut: 177 points.
9) Louisville: 168 points.
10) DePaul: 113 points.
11) Providence: 111 points.
12) Seton Hall: 97 points.
13) South Florida: 91 points.
14) St. John’s: 61 points.
15) Cincinnati: 51 points.
16) Rutgers: 21 points.

Player of the Week: Luke Harangody, Notre Dame

Freshman of the Week: Donte Greene, Syracuse

1) Georgetown (17): 301 points.
2) Marquette (1): 267 points.
3) Notre Dame: 250 points.

11) Providence: 111 points.
12) Seton Hall: 97 points.
13) South Florida: 91 points.
14) St. John’s: 61 points.
15) Cincinnati: 51 points.
16) Rutgers: 21 points.

Player of the Week: Luke Harangody. The 6’8, 250 lb sophomore bulled his way through West Virginia for 29 pts and 16 rebounds in the Irish’s conference opening 69-56 win. He also added a double-double in the win over Connecticut, registering 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman of the Week: Donte Greene. Syracuse’s 6’9 freshman sensation continues to roll as conference play begins. In a 76-70 win over St. John’s, Greene collected 22 points despite being limited with foul trouble. He capped off the week with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks against South Florida.

Last Week’s Conference Results:

Tuesday, January 1st:
Cincinnati 58, Louisville 57

Wednesday, January 2nd:
Rutgers 45, South Florida 68
St. John’s 70, Syracuse 76

Thursday, January 3rd:
Villanova 76, DePaul 84
Providence 67, Marquette 96
West Virginia 56, Notre Dame 69
Connecticut 98, Seton Hall 86

Saturday, January 5th:
Providence 65, DePaul 70
Connecticut 67, Notre Dame 73
Georgetown 58, Rutgers 46
Cincinnati 58, St. John’s 70
South Florida 77, Syracuse 89

Sunday January 6th:
Pittsburgh 63, Villanova 64
Marquette 64, West Virginia 79

Big East Notes:
* Home teams went 11-3 in the opening week of play.
* Only one week down and already 12 Big East teams have at least one loss in conference play.
* The Big East is currently ranked #2 in conference RPI, behind only the ACC. The Pac 10 is not far behind the Big East in 3rd. Of the six ‘Power Conferences’, the Big East had the strongest out of conference schedule rating.

This Week’s Conference Games:

Tuesday, January 8th:
St. John’s @ Connecticut
Seton Hall @ Marquette
Georgetown @ DePaul

Wednesday, January 9th:
Pittsburgh @ South Florida
Rutgers @ Providence
Syracuse @ Cincinnati

Thursday, January 10th:
West Virginia @ Louisville

Saturday, January 12th:
DePaul @ St. John’s
Notre Dame @ Marquette
Connecticut @ Georgetown
Seton Hall @ Pittsburgh
South Florida @ Providence
Villanova @ Cincinnati

Sunday, January 13th:
Louisville @ Rutgers
Syracuse @ West Virginia

Season on the Line? Not the start Providence College was looking for, going 0-2 in the first week. Now they return home with a chance to wipe the slate clean as Rutgers and South Florida come to the Dunkin Donuts Center. The Friars must win both these games if they hope to be in contention in the league this year. Their task is tougher with injuries to Sharaud Curry and Dwain Williams.

Team With Most to Gain? Syracuse. The Orange took care of business opening conference play with wins over St. John’s and South Florida. They get their young feet wet on the road with a trip to Cincinnati. If they can avoid a pitfall, they will go to West Virginia Sunday with a chance to make a statement to the rest of the league.

Player in the Spotlight? Ronald Ramon, Pittsburgh. Playing with a pair of injured shoulders, Ramon is being asked to be the Panthers’ primary ballhandler. A tough task for even a healthy Ramon and Villanova extended pressure from start-to-finish on Sunday and forced 22 Panther turnovers, five by Ramon. Pittsburgh still has a formidable front line and Ramon will be facing pressure each and every night to deliver them the ball and also continue to be one of th eleague’s most accurate 3-pt shooters in the absense of Levance Fields.

Offensively Challenged? Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights failed to do something in either conference contest last week that their football team did in their bowl game; score 50 points in a game. The Scarlet Knights managed just 45 in a road loss to South Florida and only could score 46 in the RAC against Georgetown. The Scarlet Knights will have to dig deep to find points, I am not sure the answers will be easy for Fred Hill to find this year.

Last Week’s Power Poll for 1/1/2008 (1st place votes in parenthesis):

1) Georgetown (11): 248 pts.
2) Marquette (3): 237 pts.
3) Pittsburgh (2): 220 pts.
4) Villanova: 209 pts.
5) West Virginia: 188 pts.
6) Louisville: 162 pts.
7) Connecticut: 159 pts.
8) Notre Dame: 147 pts.
9) Syracuse: 141 pts.
10) Providence: 123 pts.
11) Seton Hall: 96 pts.
12) South Florida: 82 pts.
13) St. John’s: 52 pts.
14) DePaul: 40 pts.
15) Rutgers: 38 pts.
16) Cincinnati: 34 pts.

Player of the Week: Paul Harris, Syracuse

Freshman of the Week: Dar Tucker, DePaul

Don’t forget to check out our earlier posts from today as Adam Zagoria supplied us with a Zags Recruiting Notebook from his travels late last week. Ray Floriani gave us the Perspective on Rutgers from their match-ups with NJIT and North Carolina last week. We also had our daily Big East News & Notes (12/17/2007) post as well.

Over the weekend, Ron Bailey added a couple stories as Big East Connected Played Well at Festival (Part I) and added a Part II last night. Lots of good stuff!

Rick Pitino will try once again for career win #500 Tuesday night when the Cardinals host Marshall. Louisville is expected to have Derrick Caracter back after a suspension for violating team rules. Louisville will host New Mexico State on Saturday and they also hope to get Juan Palacios back for that game.

Syracuse is in a different situation as it looks like their lone senior Josh Wright is done playing basketball for the Orange. The timing could not be worse as the Orange were already without Andy Rautins for the season because of a torn ACL and now Eric Devendorf will also miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL.

St. John’s lost over the weekend to Niagara and now heads to Hawaii for the Rainbow Classic where the competition will go up a notch. DePaul continues to struggle, losing at home to UIC on Saturday, now they head to Puerto Rico for a match-up with undefeated Mississippi to open up and with Clemson. Their season could get ugly quickly.

A couple top 10 match-ups to watch this week as Pitt will meet Duke at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. Georgetown travels to Memphis to meet the Tigers on Saturday afternoon. Memphis will warm-up for the contest with a trip through Cincinnati on Wednesday. Florida State will play at Providence on Saturday and Soyth Florida travels to Wake Forest on Wednesday. The week will wrap up with another Big East/ACC clash on Sunday when North Carolina State hosts Cincinnati.

This Week’s Power Poll for 12/10/2007 (1st place votes in parenthesis):

1) Georgetown (18): 288 pts.
2) Marquette: 257 pts.
3) Pittsburgh: 256 pts.
4) Villanova: 226 pts.
5) Louisville: 214 pts.

13) South Florida: 70 pts.
14) Rutgers: 56 pts.
15) DePaul: 48 pts.
16) Cincinnati: 30 pts.

South Florida’s freshman Dominique Jones swept the weekly honors, getting the most votes for Player of the Week AND Freshman of the Week. Jones scored 30 points in a road win at Richmond and 25 more in a home win over UAB for the Bulls this past week. The Bulls have won seven in a row after starting the year 0-3 under new coach Stan Heath.

The Big East managed to win three of four in the first edition of the Big East/SEC Invitational last week. Georgetown beat Alabama, West Virginia crushed Auburn and a late rally by Villanova got them past LSU. Providence suffered the only loss in the event this year for the Big East, falling in the final seconds to South Carolina.

However, the Big East stumbled over the weekend, winning just eight of 14 contests in out of conference action. Pomeroy’s RPI by Conference has the Big East 4th. Home losses by Syracuse and Louisville to Atlantic 10 schools did not help. Seton Hall, Cincinnati, Rutgers and DePaul dropped road contests. Marquette and Pittsburgh did secure helpful road wins in tough places to play over other power conferences this weekend.

For Louisville things might do not seem to be very pretty right now. Aside from the injuries that have sidelined David Padgett and Juan Palacios, coach Rick Pitino has really come down hard on his sophomore class for lackadasical play. Sitting next to him on the bench in Saturday’s loss was point guard Edgar Sosa, who Pitino has described to be ‘consumed with scoring’ and when describing his defense earlier in the preseason he remarked it looked like Sosa spend his summer ‘guarding a chair.’ Now, more trouble for the sophomore class as Derrick Caracter is Suspended Indefinitely (SportingNews.com) for violation of team rules for missing curfew Saturday night. Louisville could be down to seven scholarship players for Saturday’s date with Purdue at Conseco Fieldhouse.

With many schools across the country entering Final Exam week, the schedule is light around the Big East until the weekend. On Wednesday the Cincinnati Cross-town Shootout pits the Bearcats against Xavier. Also, Wednesday, DePaul hosts Vanderbilt. Rutgers faces NJIT on Thursday and Villanova hosts Hartford on Friday.

BIG EAST BLOGGERS PRE-SEASON POWER POLL

November 8, 2007 by · 2 Comments

November 8, 2007

Back for our third season is the Big East Bloggers Weekly Power Poll. Today we unveil the pre-season version of the poll, ranking the Big East teams 1-16. Votes were all collectied prior to the season tipping off last night with Connecticut meeting Morgan State. Contributors cast their ballots ranking the teams 1-16 and we tally up the votes. We had participation from 18 bloggers, web site publishers and contributors.

Tomorrow we will release our Pre-season all-Big East teams as well, voted by the same 18 contributors.

Every Monday during the season we will release a weekly power poll with everyone’s votes as well as our awards for Big East player of the week and Big East freshman of the week. We also have a new expanded notebook section of the weekly report where we look back at the week that was and ahead for the week in the Big East conference.
