HOOP GROUP’S SOUTHERN JAM FEST: DAY ONE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hoop Group Southern Jam Fest got underway on Friday at the Boo Williams Sportsplex and NBE Sports was on hand to take in the action. Throughout the night, we saw several standout performances and got to speak with a few players at the event.

TOP PERFORMER

Anthony Barber: The 6’2 point guard out of Hampton (VA) was absolutely sensational for Boo Williams in a blowout victory over the Stafford Hoyas to open up the event. Barber did basically anything he wanted with the ball and was nearly unstoppable when it came to getting to the rim. He scored at the basket, hit open teammates for layups, knocked down 3-pointers, and displayed a nasty crossover. Barber, an elite prospect in the 2013 class, had the look of a top 10 player as he dominated the game from start to finish in a number of different ways.

TOP SLEEPER PERFORMER

Rockell Lee-Vaughn: A little-known 5’9 point guard out of Springarn (DC), Lee-Vaughn had a superb showing in Metroball DC’s victory over East Coast Fusion. The class of 2012 prospect is clearly undersized, but he has a strong frame and quality quickness that help him make up for it. He can really hit shots from beyond the 3-point line and is also adept at making pull-up jumpers. Lee-Vaughn is a tough kid who also has some major leaping ability.

NIKE EYBL SESSION #2 – BOO WILLIAMS (TOP PERFORMERS)

Now that a couple of days have passed since the Boo Williams Invitational and I’ve had time to process all the basketball I watched, it’s time to evaluate which prospects performed best this weekend. Below are rankings by class of all the prospects I was able to watch down in Hampton. As always, these rankings are based strictly on performances from the weekend’s tournament and do not reflect my overall views on these players. It should also be noted that given the amount of talent playing at any given time I was unable to see every prospect in Hampton and thus some players miss out on this list because I didn’t evaluate them. Julius Randle, Theo Pinson, Bobby Portis, and Duane Wilson Jr. all played to rave reviews over the weekend and likely would have cracked these rankings if I’d had the chance to see it for myself. Andrew Wiggins was also the best player at the event by all accounts but happened to have his one modest performance the only time I was courtside and therefore he doesn’t squeeze into the rankings either. Enough setup, here’s who dominated in Hampton.

Class of 2013 Rankings:

1) James Young (The Family) – One of the nation’s elite scorers, Young put up points in bunches from all three levels with Kentucky’s John Calipari tracking his every move. In addition to the interest from UK, his admitted leader, Young mentioned scholarship offers from Michigan State, Ohio State and Providence to NBE over the weekend.

2) Jarquez Smith (Georgia Stars) – Smith’s stock arguably rose more than anyone else’s with his weekend performance as the 6’9” forward mixed deep 3 point range with electric above the rim finishes. Florida State and Georgia as the leaders for his services at this point.

3) Kameron Williams (Baltimore Elite) – One of the tournaments purest scorers, Williams dropped 30 in a thrilling comeback victory over King James by unleashing a brilliant shooting display.

4) Keith Frazier (Houston Hoops) – Another pure scorer, Frazier mixed NBA 3 point range with relentless attacking of the rim netting himself 16 free throw attempts in one outing. Arizona, Texas, Texas A&M, Providence, Tennessee, Kansas, Baylor, Marquette, and Kentucky along with local North Texas, were the schools mentioned by Frazier when asked about his recruitment.

NIKE EYBL SESSION #2 – BOO WILLIAMS (DAY III)

The Boo Williams Invitational wrapped up on Sunday and with it concluded the second session of Nike’s EYBL circuit. Unlike the majority of AAU tournaments Sunday is not playoff day at Boo Williams but rather just continued EYBL regular season play as all 40 teams are competing for spots in July’s Peach Jam. Star performances showed up in droves just as they had on the first two days. Below are a sampling of the best showings NBE has the pleasure of viewing.

Top Performance of the Day:

Kameron Williams (Baltimore Elite 2013) – Despite being undersized for the shooting guard position at 6’2”, 170 pounds Williams is an elite scorer. His most dangerous weapon is the jump shot but labeling him as “just a shooter” is rather short sighted. Players who are strictly shooters rely on others to create open shots for them but Williams is more than capable of creating his own looks. He’s smart enough to know that at his size challenging the trees in the paint is a low percentage shot whereas his jump shot is very efficient. Williams makes deep three balls off the dribble or the catch but is most effective using 2-3 dribbles to create space and then burying midrange shots. In an afternoon comeback victory over King James Shooting Stars he put on a scoring clinic going for 30 points on 11-18 shooting including 5 triples. I honestly don’t recall him missing a shot in the entire second half as his Baltimore Elite squad made their furious comeback. Kam Williams is a scoring machine and not enough high major programs have looked past his lack of elite size to realize that yet.

NIKE EYBL SESSION #2 – BOO WILLIAMS (DAY II)

After a short day on Friday, the Boo Williams Invitational found its sea legs with a long day of hoops of Saturday. Action was fast and furious with the majority being the 17U Nike EYBL games with a little bit of 16U and 15U sprinkled in. Mobs of players had big performances in the star filled field and here are a few that NBE had the pleasure of viewing.

Top Performance of the Day:

Tyus Jones (Howard Pulley Panthers 2014) – Jones is the best point guard in America and showed all the reasons why in a masterful performance on Saturday night. A college head coach will be able to turn the ball over to Jones immediately as a freshman and be able to completely trust the young man. He plays with a maturity that is almost surreal for such a young player seemingly making the correct decision with the basketball every time down the floor. Jones can shoot it with range but only does so when the defense calls for it. He can slip passes into the tightest of windows on the money but only does so when the defense takes away an easier option. Perhaps most impressive was how every one of Jones’ passes seemed to land right in the hands of his teammate putting them in a position to score. Jones has a unique understanding of exactly where his teammates want the ball and he puts it right there. His recruitment with be crucial to the entire 2014 class because elite players are going to want to play alongside the elite playmaker. Tyus Jones is a bona fide stud.

NIKE EYBL SESSION #2 – BOO WILLIAMS (DAY I)

The Boo Williams tournament got underway on Friday night and with it the second session of Nike’s EYBL circuit. The amount of sheer talent in the gym was almost overwhelming as all eight courts were filled with future division 1 players all night long. Even in a field loaded with star power some players managed to separate themselves from the pack and here is sampling of Friday night’s best.

Top Performance of the Night:

Tahj Shamsid-Deen (Southern Stampede 2013) – Shamsid-Deen made a name for himself last weekend as the EYBL circuit kicked off in Minneapolis and continued his strong play Friday night. The 5’10” lefty point guard was deadly pulling up from midrange going in either direction. He used a quick first step to create space and then elevated over defenders to get off jump shots from 8-18 feet. While impressive scoring the ball for the majority of the game, Shamsid-Deen showed his true worth in the final moments with his team trailing by a point and 15 seconds on the clock. Southern Stampede ran an iso set for Shamsid-Deen and as he had done all game he got a step on his defender and pulled up from 10 feet. The ball slipped through the net giving Southern Stampede a one point lead and ultimately a victory. Both his desire to take the shot and ability to make it in that big spot spoke volumes about Shamsid-Deen’s leadership and accountability at the point guard spot.

LAS VEGAS AAU WEEKEND UPDATE: FLORIDA RAMS FLEX MUSCLES; RECRUITING UPDATES GALORE

The first open weekend of the spring/summer meant action throughout the country, including Las Vegas with Sin City hosting three events. The biggest of the three was the adidas VIP Exclusive Run, which featured most of the nation’s best programs under the three stripes banner.

The program that stole the show this weekend at adidas was the Florida Rams, whose 16u and 17u teams both won championships. The 17 and under team is well-known by this point, as they’re led by one of the country’s top prospects in the 2013 class in Chris Walker.

A slender forward who can run the floor and finish with the best of them, Walker played well on both ends of the floor for much of the weekend and likely had one of the early frontrunners for dunk of the AAU season. But he had plenty of help as well, especially from Florida commit Kasey Hill.

The 2013 point guard ran the show for the Rams, displaying the ability to get to the basket off the bounce at will. Hill also did a good job of distributing the basketball, setting up Walker and Kansas commit Brannen Greene frequently.

THE HOOP GROUP’S PITTSBURGH JAMFEST: DAY THREE

The Hoop Group’s Pittsburgh Jam Fest came to a close Sunday with some very intense semifinals and championship games. Many of the usual suspects who had been playing well all weekend continued to do so on Sunday but one squad of 2014 players in particular stepped its game up an extra notch and NBE has the rundown.

Caleb Martin and Cody Martin (Team Loaded NC 16U, 2014, Davie) – Even more so than the Harrison brothers in the grade above them, these two 6’6” wings have extremely similar bodies and games. In fact, at this point in their development, they play almost exactly alike. They’re both fairly slender but appear to have the frame to really add strength and muscle. In leading Team Loaded (NC) to the 16U championship on Sunday, the two uber-talented North Carolina natives showed off a nice mix of skill and athleticism and played very well off of each other. Both are good passers that like to work in the high post and on the wing slashing to the basket. They also attack the glass and are active on defense. Their jump shots are decent right now but could certainly improve. In a competitive quarterfinal game against a solid Team Work (OH) squad in the morning on Sunday, Cody finished with 14 points, a handful of rebounds, and a couple of steals while Caleb put up 19 points including a couple of threes and several boards as well.

Also like the Harrisons, Caleb and Cody are 100 percent a package deal as far as their recruitment goes. Still early for the rising juniors, they already have offers from North Carolina State, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech and are hearing from the likes of North Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Xavier, Clemson, Kansas, and Georgetown. Both said they can see themselves in the ACC but that they’d like to wait and take as much time as they can before making their decision.

KRIS JENKINS SEEING RECRUITMENT EXPAND AFTER BIG SEASON

PITTSBURGH — There aren’t many players in the country who boosted their stock during the high school season than Kris Jenkins did. The class of 2013 prospect out of Gonzaga (DC) demonstrated an improved skill set and major production, leading to quite an increase in college interest.

Jenkins, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound combo forward, took the floor with DC Assault on Friday night at the Pitt Jam Fest to open up the first Live Evaluation period of the spring and summer. Although he did not turn in a major performance, Jenkins did do some nice work down low defensively and on the glass in a blowout victory over Virginia Elite.

After the game, the junior took the time to speak with NBE Basketball Report and discuss his recruitment.

At this point, Jenkins lists scholarship offers from Miami, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Penn State, George Washington, Xavier, Clemson, Villanova, and more. He added that Ohio State, Louisville, Georgetown, Pittsburgh and Tennessee are involved in his recruitment as well.

“No, I don’t have any favorites,” Jenkins said, also noting that there are no schools in particular coming at him the hardest.

On what he is looking for in a school, Jenkins remarked, “Just, you know, where I could fit best as well as great academics and [a good] relationship with the coaching staff.”

One thing that will not play a part in Jenkins’ decision is location. As for that decision itself, Jenkins knows when it will most likely be coming.

“I probably will make my decision in the fall before my senior season,” Jenkins said of his commitment timetable.

One of the concerns about Jenkins has been that he is a bit of a ‘tweener position-wise, which is why his improved perimeter play in the winter was so key. Jenkins, though, does not list himself as a player of any particular position.

“Just a basketball player,” he said of what position he sees himself playing in college. “I don’t think I can be labeled to a position.”

When asked how he can carry over his strong play during the school year into the spring and summer, Jenkins mentioned “staying aggressive” as an important aspect of that.

THE HOOP GROUP’S PITTSBURGH JAMFEST: DAY ONE

The Hoop Group Jamfest rolled into Pittsburgh Friday night with several intriguing 1st and 2nd round games in the 17 and under and 16 and under divisions. Many of the games were blowouts, as the elite teams were mostly matched up with the lower level squads for the early rounds, but there were still some high level players in action on Friday. Teams like Sports U/Team Izod’s 16U, Atlanta Xpress 17U, and DC Assault Gold 17U are littered with Division 1 prospects who put forth impressive performances, albeit in limited action.

Karl Towns (Sports U 16U, 2015, St. Joseph Metuchen) – Only a freshman, Towns was easily the most talented player on the floor in Sports U’s 65-38 win over Blaze (WV), grabbing any rebound he wanted to and clogging the lane with his 6’10” frame. While not the most physically imposing Sports U big man – that would be 6’8” 2014 power forward Quadri Moore – Towns showed why he’s going to be one of the hottest names in the 2015 class. He’s still very thin at this point but his perimeter skills are awfully promising for such a young post player. Offensively, especially on the low block, Towns is still somewhat raw. He was forced into a travel after one catch in the post and failed to get position in the halfcourt a couple times. The rising sophomore also needs to get much stronger, as he was fouled multiple times by much smaller players and was unable to finish inside. The good news on that front, though, is that Towns is an excellent free throw shooter, going 6-6 at the line with great form. His free throw shooting ability translates to the outside, as well, where he has a nice stroke from beyond the arc. Towns, who finished with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, went 1-3 from downtown, hitting one from a few feet behind the line. Defensively, his natural gifts make him an intimidating shot blocker, but he also has very active hands and was able to get a steal or two in trapping situations. Despite his aggressiveness, Towns does a pretty good job of avoiding fouls, which is encouraging for a young prospect. Competing with and against players a year older than him – and in front of Jamie Dixon (Pitt), Bill Carmody (Northwestern), and a slew of other college coaches – Towns proved himself a (literally) big name in the class of 2015.

KAZA KAJAMI-KEANE LOOKING FOR RIGHT FIT IN CLASS OF 2012

Canadian point guard Kaza Kajami-Keane has made another move. With many of the schools in on his recruitment looking for backcourt help to finish their Class of 2012 recruiting, Keane has scrapped plans for a post-grad season and is now looking to sign this spring and help one of those schools find their solution to their 2012 recruiting.

“There was a lot of thinking that went into me going to college this up coming year, but the main ones were how I already have the right grades and right academic habits to go forth and go to college,” Kajami-Keane told NBE over the weekend, “so there wasn’t really a need academically to stay in high school. Also another reason was because a lot of schools that were recruiting me were really interested in getting in a [Class of] 2012 point guard, so I felt that I would jump at the situation when it arose.”

Kajami-Keane hopes to find that right situation because he feels the time is now to move on to college and take his game to that next level.

These are not an overall opinion on these players but rather a snapshot based on how they played at Rhode Island College over the weekend. The top spot in 2012 came down to the nation’s two best big men and is a decision I agonized over before finalizing it.

2012 NATIONAL PREP SCHOOL INVITATIONAL — DAY THREE

With most college programs having games of their own on Saturday fewer coaches were on hand at Rhode Island College to take in the action but that didn’t stop the players from putting on a show. The best game of the day and arguably the weekend thus far was between New Hampton Prep and Canarias Basketball Academy. Canarias got out to a lead using their incredible size and strength but New Hampton came storming back to force overtime. New Hampton had lost stud sophomore Noah Vonleh to five fouls towards the end of regulation and it caught up with them in the extra session as Canarias prevailed 82-77. Despite coming up five points short on the scoreboard New Hampton had the top individual performance of the day from a somewhat unlikely source.

Top Performer of the Day:

Olivier Hanlon (New Hampton 2012) – committed to Boston College – Of the 10-12 times I’ve seen Hanlon play both with New Hampton and on the summer circuit with Albany City Rocks today clearly stands out as his best overall performance. The 6’2” physical point guard carried his team on his back for the entire 2nd half and overtime session by scoring and creating for others. Hanlon is at his best in screen and roll sets where he turns the corner aggressively and attacks the lane. In those situations he scored with the floater, got all the way to the rim, drew fouls on Canarias’ bigs, and found open teammates on the perimeter. New Hampton ran the same high ball screen seemingly every time down in the 2nd half and Canarias never found an answer for Hanlon’s fearlessness turning the corner. He also showed off his 3 point stroke as he played off the ball at times and knocked them down in catch and shoot situations. Just as impressive as his offense is Hanlon’s intensity and ball pressure on the defensive end. He never takes a possession off on that end and got multiple steals with his quick footwork and great hands. Boston College fans should look forward to a bulldog at the point guard for the next four years.

2012 NATIONAL PREP SCHOOL INVITATIONAL — DAY TWO

The second day of the National Prep School Invitational featured nine games with tips starting bright and early at 9 AM. Things started off a bit slowly with the first couple of early morning games featuring sluggish, turnover prone play. Then at 1:30 PM everything changed when Notre Dame Prep took the floor against Canarias Basketball Academy. That’s when a 7 foot monster put his stamp on this tournament and in doing so earned top billing for the day from me.

Top Performer of the Day:

Steven Adams (Notre Dame Prep 2012) – committed to Pittsburgh – Adams was great in his team’s game on Thursday and nearly earned the top spot in my recap. He was noticeably better on Friday. Adams is a massive human being standing 7 foot, 240 pounds. Unlike most people his size though; he is an excellent athlete showing lateral quickness and powerful burst off the floor. Every time he got within five feet of the rim on Friday the back board was in jeopardy of being torn down. Adams dunks with such power whether he has time to set himself or has to go up quickly on an offensive rebound. The scary thing about the big kiwi is that he’s only scratching the surface of his massive potential. He still doesn’t understand the consistent aggression and energy that he can play with and the impact it will have on his game. Adams shows it in flashes and has incredible success every time he does but once a coach makes him realize that’s needed every play his impact will be off the charts. I don’t think I’m overstating it when I say that Steven Adams belongs in the discussion with the newly re-classified Nerlens Noel and Shabazz Muhammad for top player in the 2012 class.

CLASS OF 2013 INTRO: BO ZEIGLER

While already well known in the Midwest, Detroit (MI) Community High’s Byron ‘Bo’ Zeigler is poised to make a big name for himself nationally this spring and summer on the recruiting trail. The 6-foot-6, 191-pound small forward, according to our friends at Hoops Window, is a rubberband man on the floor, offensively and defensively and utilizes a speed burst dribble and glide towards the hoop with ease, it doesn’t matter from which side of the court, Zeigler is effective with both hands. On defense, Hoops Window compares Zeigler to a smaller Hakim Warrick when he throws up his long arms to block a shot.

Zeigler told NBE this weekend that he is continuing to work on his ball-handling as well as his on-ball defense this season. With the spring AAU season approaching quickly, he is also looking forward to hitting the circuit with his Michigan Hurricane teammates.

Mernagh’s Nightly Nuggets: Oakland/UNLV/Boeheim

Star of the Night: Reggie Hamilton Oakland

Tennessee couldn’t stop Oakland guard Reggie Hamilton, who gave the Vols a sour taste, not to mention a career-high 35 points, in road game that Counzo Martin is on record saying he never would’ve scheduled had it been up to him. Martin’s crew was just in Maui about 105 hours ago and has since played two games, both on the road, since returning from paradise. They will face Pitt in the BIG EAST/SEC Challenge this weekend. But tonight belongs to Greg Kampe’s Oakland Grizzlies, and their sharpshooter Hamilton. The O-Rena was rocking and one of the best smaller college atmospheres was on display for the entire country. Oakland has a program, in fact they’ve had one for a number of years now. They also just made it damn-near impossible to get any other BCS league school to come to Suburban Detroit to play them in the future. This was Oakland’s second win in as many seasons over Tennessee. The final was 89-81 and Drew Valentine added 15 points, Laval Lucas-Perry 14 and Travis Bader 13 for Oakland (4-2).

Belated Stars of Saturday Night: UNLV

Anytime you beat North Carolina it’s a huge win. When you beat the #1 ranked Tar Heels that are being proclaimed as the second coming of the Dream Team by some, it’s momentous. Oscar Bellfield (16 points and 9 assists) and Chace Stanback (28 points and 10 rebounds) were both instrumental, but the truth is the entire Rebels rotation contributed to their 90-80 victory in the Desert. Great win for Dave Rice in his first season at the helm, while a tip of the hat also goes to Lon Kruger for leaving the deck stacked in Sin City before leaving for Oklahoma. Shabazz Muhammad, the nation’s #1 ranked recruit and Bishop Gorman star, watched the upset from a seat in Orleans Arena.

Great Win of the Night: Xavier

Chris Mack’s squad went into Vanderbilt and won in OT after Mark Lyons made a great attacking play to send the game into the extra session.

Good Win of the Night: WVU

The Mountaineers drilled Akron but don’t get it twisted, while it was a really good win, and their second strong performance in a row, the Zips were without suspended star point guard Alex Abreu. He’s a difference maker for Akron. Still, props to Team Huggins — Jabarie Hinds, as we well knew, is a player player.

Goat of the Season (and not in the greatest of all time way): Jim Boeheim

The longtime pompous and arrogant Syracuse coach has done a lot of things over the years to prove to the discerning eye that he’s just another big-time coach living in the fantasy bubble that achieving success in places like Syracuse produces. Coming out in defense of longtime assistant Bernie Fine when Fine was being accused of molestation by a former ball boy for his program was okay, if that had been all Boeheim did. Instead he attacked the alleged victims, calling them liars and saying it was a scheme, a money grab. Boeheim said he’s known Fine for 35 years etc etc. Well, with the release of the tape of Fine’s wife openly discussing the alleged molestation with the victim it seems as if Boeheim really didn’t know his friend that well. Boeheim released a statement apologizing for his remarks (sort of) but I missed the part where he apologized for calling alleged victims of sexual assault, things that allegedly started happening when they were defenseless boys, liars. The victims coming out against Fine are growing in numbers. Boeheim’s words were unforgivable — he did exactly what bullies do. Then again, we’ve come to expect that kind of behavior from him.

HARVARD IN GOOD SHAPE WITH ’13 PF ALEX FOSTER

Chicago’s De La Salle High School has produced a number of talented players in recent years, most notably Michael Shaw last year. Current junior (Class of 2013) Alex Foster will look to take the reigns this season as their go-to player and lead them to his ultimate goal.

“My goal [this season] is simple and that’s to win a state championship…I want our team to prove everyone wrong,” Foster told NBE Sports.

The 6-foot-8 power forward has always been a player seen with a lot of potential. While he works on the physical aspect of his game, Foster is also working on the mental side of the game, hoping to believe in himself more.

“I believe I improved by having more confidence in myself that was what was holding me back,” he said. “I want to just keep getting better in the future.”

There have been many programs, mostly from the Midwest, to come by De La Salle this fall to get a look at Foster and his teammates. The list is so long that Foster did not even want to try to remember all the names. However, he did offer a big hint in the direction of his recruitment.

“Right now Harvard, Wake Forest, Notre Dame (tickets) and Tennessee are at me strong. There’s been so many schools that have been to De La Salle I honestly couldn’t name them all,” he said.

However, one school, and it may come as a surprise to many, is currently standing out.

“My favorite school is Harvard,” said Foster.

Although he has a favorite and he took a visit up to Boston earlier in the fall to check out Harvard, do not expect a decision in the too near future.

“I’ll make my decision by the end of this season or the end of the summer,” he said.

In the meantime there is business to attend to on the court…like winning a state championship. NBE will hope to check in with Alex Foster and his De La Salle teammates throughout the year to see if they accomplish their mission.

SATURDAY PLAYOFF ACTION FROM IS8 FALL LEAGUE

The IS8 / Nike playoffs were in full swing on Saturday with action tipping off at 9am. IS8 or Intermediate School Number 8 is a middle school in Jamaica, Queens that seats approximately 400 people and yet it is one of the most famous courts in all of New York City. The tournament means a little more than an average event as Mike Young of the Playaz Club told me in a postgame interview. “IS8 is different than other tournaments. Our program takes a lot of pride in this event and a lot of pride in winning it. It means more than other events.” The level of play on the floor spoke to that with Young himself leading a group of standout performances.

Standout Performers:

Mike Young (2013) – Playaz Juniors – Young’s game has progressed since I saw him last in July. He still possesses major athletic talents and is a force on both backboards but his offensive game has improved by leaps and bounds as he scored a game-high 20 points in a win over Kendall Madison. on Saturday he showcased a soft jump hook with both hands and range on his jump shot out to 16 feet. He played with a demonstrative attitude on the low block and called for the ball inside during crucial situations in the game. Young was very efficient offensively and cleaned up any missed shots for put backs. Already a clear high major prospect, if Young’s game continues to progress on the offensive end he has a chance to be one of the nation’s top recruits.

REGGIE CAMERON ENJOYS RECENT BIG EAST VISIT

Reggie Cameron has seen his recruitment pick up over the summer months. The 6-foot-7 sweet-shooting wing out of Hudson Catholic (NJ) High School has been a mainstay on the NJ Playaz AAU program. Their highly successful 16U squad had a large number of basketball coaches following them from event to event during the July live evaluation periods that recently concluded.

“I picked up offers from Villanova and Northwestern, and I picked up interest from Florida, Tennessee, Notre Dame and some others,” said Cameron of new recruiting developments for him over the summer.

Cameron mentioned other schools that have been maintianing contact with him through the summer months include Seton Hall, Xavier, Penn State, UMass, West Virginia and Marquette.

Cameron recently found the time to visit one of the schools most involved in his recruitment: Seton Hall. He visited the school with AAU and high school teammates Kavon Stewart and Mike Young and liked what he saw.

“Yes,” Cameron responded when asked if he recently visited Kevin Willard’s program. “I had a really good time. I was impressed of how much my ex-Paterson Catholic teammate Fuquan Edwin was improving his game.”

Cameron mentioned that all the schools mentioned are active in his recruitment. With no currently favorites he is hoping to have the chance to see more schools with unofficial visits in the fall.

“I don’t have anything planned yet but I would like to get out to a couple of thoose schools in the fall [for unofficial visits],” he said.

Over the summer on the AAU trail the 16U Playaz had many high points and Cameron impressed with his play. However, when asked what was the highlight of the summer period he will remember the most was not even from a game he played in.

“The biggest highlight was probobly not my game, but watching our 17u team come from 26 down to beat Mac Irvin Fire in the championship of the Desert Duel in Pheonix,” Cameron said.

Cameron hopes one of his next highlights is a state championship with Hudson Catholic in the season ahead. In the meantime, NBE will hope to catch Reggie Cameron and his talented NJ Playaz teammates in action at events such as the Fall Jam Fest put on by the Hoop Group and the always exciting IS8 Fall League in NYC. ANDREW WHITE TALKS ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA VISIT

Bob Huggins and his West Virginia Mountaineers are getting an early start on the 2011-2012 season with an overseas trip to Italy this coming week. With the trip the team is allowed to have 10 practice sessions to prepare for their upcoming games. Bob Huggins also used the time this weekend to bring in a key target of their 2012 recruiting efforts for an unofficial visit as Andrew White came to Morgantown to see things for himself.

“I took a visit to West Virginia the past two days,” White told NBE’s Matt Whitfield this afternoon. “It went real well.”

White had a great summer on the AAU circuit with Team Loaded and quickly became a top target of many programs.

R.J. CURINGTON ENJOYS ‘IMPRESSIVE’ VISIT TO INDIANA

The history of Indiana basketball is something that many outside of the state may not truly understand.

R.J. Curington was able to experience the passion and history first hand today when he visited the Indiana campus.

“The history, I was able to see the banners and all of the NBA players and IU greats that have played here,” he stated when asked what stood out about the visit.

“All the assistants were great and Calbert Cheaney was a very humble guy”

Curington is a standout player for the Canada based CIA Bounce AAU team and plays his prep ball at the historic Oak Hill Academy located in Mouth of Wilson, Va. Curington is a dedicated player that understands what it takes to be great. He is outspoken and eager to be in the spotlight. Curington is a scoring guard that has some ability to handle the point spot. He can lead the break and tends to make good decisions on the fly. Curington has a steady jump shot from behind the arch. He rarely forces up shots and plays a unselfish game. He continues to work on his handle and eventually will end up playing a lot of the point position.

Even though he plays primarily outside of the state, he should definitely be considered one of the top 2013 players in the state of Indiana.

He has visited several college campuses and he still plans to visit other schools before he goes back East on August 26th.

“Tennessee, Illinois, Stanford and Harvard want me to schedule a visit before school starts,” Curington told an NBE colleague this evening.

When asked if he had anything special to say to the Hoosier fans he stated “I just appreciate the love they are showing. It is a great place and they expect great things.”

“It would definitely be a great place to go.”

R.J. Curington still has a ways to go in his recruiting process as he told NBE he is wide open with no favorites at this time, but it sure does sound like that Indiana tradition really hit home as he summed up the trip.

“Everything was pretty impressive.”
