The regular season is complete and the Big East Tournament tips off Tuesday so be sure to visit our 2010 Big East Tournament & Tickets page for the full tournament schedule and the links needed for Big East basketball fans to purchase tickets to any or all of the 2010 Big East Tournament sessions.
Throughout the day the majority of NBE writers and contributors contemplated, debated and discussed our post-season awards for the Big East conference. Its been another great season with 16 teams battling it out for 18 games each through the 71 days of Big East action from December 26th through this past Saturday. After much deliberation…here are the NBE Big East 2009-2010 season awards:

BIG EAST MID-SEASON AWARDS

by CHRIS DOKISH
With Big East conference play beginning this week and New Year’s Eve upon us, Chris Dokish breaks down the Big East on what he has seen to date in the first month and a half of the season. His awards are based on what has happened to date this season in the Big East. Conference play will likely shake things up and separate the contenders from the pretenders, but for today, this is how things have looked so far through one man’s eyes…
10 PLAYERS COMPETING FOR 1ST TEAM HONORS:
Da’Sean Butler, West Virginia- The leading scorer for the Mountaineers is having another great season with 16.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.8 apg, 50.2% from the field and 79.2% from the line.
Jerome Dyson, UConn- No.3 scorer in the league with 19.8 ppg, 9th in the league with 4.7 apg, and his normal shut down defense. In his 11 games, he has gone over 20 points six times and has had 5 or more assists five times.
PITT LOOKING AT LATE BACKCOURT ADDITION

Pittsburgh looking at surprise late addition for 2009-2010 season
by CHRIS DOKISH
The graduation of Levance Fields has left the Pittsburgh Panthers in a bit of a bind this season as Jamie Dixon and his staff are trying to stay a contender in the highly competitive Big East. The player who was supposed to be the heir apparent, Travon Woodall, is a redshirt freshman whose injuries have prevented him from getting experience. Sophomore combo Ashton Gibbs had a great summer playing the point as he helped Dixon win the U19 World Championships, but the Panthers prefer that Gibbs concentrate more on shooting, than distributing. With the point guard position in flux, something that hasn’t happened for the Panthers in at least a decade, Dixon and his staff looked for a solution.
NATE LUBICK CLEARS THE AIR FOR NBE

Hoyas still in line to have services of NE Playaz versatile big man in 2010
Springfield, Mass–All day, word of Nate Lubick de-committing from Georgetown hung around town, as well as gyms in Philadelphia, Reading and other points where college basketball coaches have gathered during the opening of the July evaluation period.

Lubick pictured at last month's Rumble in the Bronx
NBE debunked the rumor, following Lubick’s game with the NE Playaz today.
“I’m committed to Georgetown,” said Lubick, a big shooter who’s been working on improving his quickness and ability to defend different positions this summer.
When asked if he was considering re-opening his options, Lubick shook his head repeatedly, giving a quick “no.”
The rumor began to circulate on Wednesday evening and seemed to be confirmed on Thursday in Philadephia.
“He is re-opening his recruitment,” a source told NBE’s Jeff Borzello at the Reebok All-American Camp in the Philadelphia University Gallagher Center.
Asked by NBE’s Chris Dokish this morning to comment, NE Playaz head coach John Carroll stated, “Right now Nate is committed to Georgetown. What he does in the future is up to Nate. If you know what I’m saying. Is that a fair way to say it?”
Still, others continued to speculate on Lubick’s future.
One major college assistant head coach at the event, who is not recruiting Lubick, predicted to us rather matter-of-factly, “He will [de-commit], plus he will eventually go to Duke”.
A source with knowledge says that Lubick was considering Michigan and UCLA strongly before choosing Georgetown, but does not know where he will be looking for a second destination if he does open it back up.
Notre Dame could be a possibility, the source indicated.
However, that speculation can seemingly be put to rest after talking with Lubick today at the BasketBull First Eight event. Shortly after spending a few moments with NBE, it almost seemed fitting that John Thompson III, the head coach of Georgetown, would enter the Mass Mutual Center and take his position courtside to see the action, no doubt looking forward to seeing his prized recruit, future Hoya Nate Lubick, in action this afternoon.

EARLY LOOK AT THE 2009-10 BIG EAST

Now that players have made their final decision about entering the NBA draft, this is one writer’s opinion on how the 2009-10 season will go. This is not to be confused with the official NBE Basketball Report predictions that will be released in the weeks leading up to the start of the season next November.
Of course, the Big East Basketball Schedule will be released in the next few weeks and that is also a good indicator on who the league thinks has the best basketball odds for the upcoming season by the marquee match-ups they set-up.
For now, here is a quick rundown of one opinion of the 16 teams…

Chris Dokish takes a look at how the Big East does recruiting the elite
by Chris Dokish
With its large number of elite programs, the Big East Conference is arguably the most competitive basketball conference in NCAA history. One of the main areas that the conference flexes its muscle is in the lifeblood of any college team- recruiting.
With the conference as powerful as it is, it has little trouble continually replenishing its massive talent level. But in a conference that is so competitive, the programs need more than just good recruits to compete, they need elite recruits to keep their heads above water.

6′10 2009 Ukrainian Natyazhko still looking at Pitt, ASU and Arizona
by Chris Dokish
DeJuan Blair is moving on to the NBA and left in his massive wake is a gaping hole at center. To help fill that hole, Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon and his staff are looking to IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. where 6′10″ 250 pound center Kyryl Natyazhko (pronounced KAH-rill NAT-yaz-ko) is located. The Ukrainian import, reached by phone this afternoon, disputes a recent national article in which his coach at IMG, Vince Walden, stated that his decision will come down to Arizona or Arizona State, and that his decision will likely come this weekend.
BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE YEAR RACE

by Chris Dokish
With less than three weeks left in the regular season, the race for the Big East Player of the Year has become as brutal as a typical late season conference game. However, despite the many players have very good seasons this year, the number of serious contenders has appeared to have dwindled to four- Pittsburgh center DeJuan Blair, Marquette wing Jerel McNeal, Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet and returning Player of the Year, forward Luke Harangody of Notre Dame.
Midway through the season it looked like Harangody’s parade of double-doubles would lead him to his second straight Player of the Year honor, but in the last few months, Notre Dame’s swoon, coupled with a scintillating stretch by the other three major contenders, has now made this a wide open race. Let’s look, in alphabetical order, at how all four are shaping up with just a handful of games left to make a difference.

Many others in Big East also chasing Isaiah Epps and Will Barton for 2010, too
by Chris Dokish
The Big East boasts the No.1 team in the land, but this time it’s not Connecticut, Georgetown or Syracuse. Instead, after nearly a decade of excellence, the program on top of the heap is the University of Pittsburgh. And to the victors goes the spoils.
For the Class of 2009 the Panthers have inked an excellent class of four, led by Top 50 prospect Dante Taylor and quickly rising 6′9″ center Talib Zanna. But looking to strike while the iron is hot, Jamie Dixon and his staff are looking to continue their recruiting success in 2010, with two perimeter players especially in their sites: Isaiah Epps and Will Barton.
