RECRUITING NOTEBOOK (3/1/2013): RIP JOSH LEVEL

Before getting into the recruiting news, we want to send our condolences to the family and friends of Josh Level. A standout basketball player from North Carolina in the junior class, Level sadly passed away last week, far too young. The guys over at Ball is Life put together a nice “Josh Level Tribute Mix,” which can be found Here.

On the trail, one of the biggest pieces of news involved a star dual-sport athlete. Derrick Griffin of Terry (TX) committed to Miami for football, in news that looks to have been broken by Peter Ariz of Canesooks to have been broken by Peter Ariz of CanesInSight.com. The class of 2013 prospect, who has signed a Letter of Intent, is expected to play basketball at Miami as well.

Griffin, who checks in at 6-foot-6, is a wide receiver/tight end on the gridiron and a power forward on the hardwood. He had been committed to Texas A&M for a long time, but did not sign with the Aggies due to reported academic issues.

Tyrek Coger of Word of God Christian Academy (NC) tweeted that he pledged to Middle Tennessee State. Coger is a 6-foot-8 center in the class of 2013 and he is a former Missouri commit.

Jordan Robinson of Quality Education Academy (NC) has committed to play his college ball at Duquesne, per Dave Telep of ESPN.com. Robinson is a 6-foot-8 power forward from Canada in the class of 2013.

Joel Francisco of ESPN.com reported that Joe McGlaston made the decision to attend Utah State. McGlaston, a class of 2013 recruit, is a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who attends Dublin (CA).

Sean Van Winkle, the head coach at Lakota West (OH), tweeted that a member of his team, Monty Boykins, popped to Lafayette. Boykins is a 6-foot-3 shooting guard in the class of 2013.

Evan Daniels of Scout.com reported that Charles Glover of Gonzaga (DC) gave his verbal commitment to Mount St. Mary’s. Glover, a class of 2013 prospect, is a 6-foot-1 shooting guard.

Cavan Walsh of ChicagoHoops.com had the ness that that Mike Wells of Delaware Hayes (OH) pledged to Albany. Wells is a 5-foot-8 point guard in the class of 2013.

According to the Twitter account of Vincent Robinson, the coach of The Robinson School (NJ), JuCo prospect Rasheem King has committed to Alcorn State. The class of 2013 prospect is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard.

Brandon Roberts of West Morgan (AL) took his name off the board and pledged to Samford, per Garrett Tucker of Future150.com. Roberts is a 6-foot-1 point guard and a member of the class of 2013.

In the class of 2014, Arizona got a major pickup in landing Parker Jackson-Cartwright of Loyola (CA), in news broken by Dave Telep. Jackson-Cartwright is just 5-foot-8, but he is one of the best point guards in the nation in the junior class. Additionally, he is the younger brother of standout Penn junior guard Miles Cartwright.

BYU dipped into the class of 2014 and received a commitment from Jake Toolson, per his Twitter account. Toolson is a 6-foot-5 small forward out of Highland (AZ).

Kyle Goon of the Salt Lake Tribune reported that JuCo prospect of Willie Mangum of Western Nebraska Community College (NE) popped to Utah State. Mangum is a 6-foot-1 shooting guard in the class of 2014.

Darius Thompson of Blackman (TN) has decommitted from Vanderbilt, according to Jerry Meyer of 247Sports.com. Thompson, a 2013 recruit, is a 6-foot-4 combo guard. He told Meyer that he had schools like Auburn, Tennessee and Texas A&M pursing him.

Demarcus Croaker of Jones (FL) decommitted from Murray State, per ESPN.com’s Reggie Rankin. Croaker, a 6-foot-3 class of 2013 shooting guard, would have been a major pickup for the Racers. Rankin reported that Croaker will officially visit Texas this weekend, while Coast 2 Coast Hoops also reported that he will trip to Baylor the following weekend.

Class of 2013 JuCo recruit Chad Frazier chopped his list down to two schools and has only South Carolina and Texas A&M left, per Brad Winton of JucoRecruiting.com. Frazier, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Gulf Coast Community College (FL), had been considering Marquette, UCF, UCLA, Washington, and West Virginia as well, as Winton previously reported. This coming weekend, Frazier will take an official visit out to Texas A&M, according to Winton.

Matthew Atewe of Notre Dame Prep (MA) tweeted out a list of four schools that included Charlotte, Nevada, Auburn, and Nebraska. Atewe is a 6-foot-9 center in the class of 2013.

Jermaine Lawrence of Pope John XXIII (NJ) is out for the season due to his wrist injury, per Zach Braziller of the New York Post. Lawrence, a 6-foot-9 power forward, played in just a few games this season due to the injury. He is a highly-touted class of 2013 prospect who is committed to Cincinnati.

The top high school basketball player in the nation, Andrew Wiggins, was named the Naismith Player of the Year, as his coach at Huntington Prep (WV), first mentioned on Twitter. Wiggins is a 6-foot-7 small forward in the class of 2013. Jerry Meyer was the first to report that Lone Peak (UT) head coach Quincy Lewis was named the Naismith Coach of the Year.
