KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Sunday was the final day of the last Live Evaluation Period of July. While the turnout was not as high, there were still a number of Division I coaches in the gym until they had to leave a 5:00 p.m. NBE Sports took in much of the action on Sunday and all but one of the games we watched was from non-Gold Pool teams, allowing us to catch some sleepers. Find out below who shined in their last chance of the summer and also see who leads for a trio of 2013 prospects.

TOP PERFORMER

Nigel Hayes stood out as the easy pick for the top performer spot from Sunday’s action. A 6’7 power forward from Whitmer (OH), Hayes turned in a really nice showing for All-Ohio Red. Hayes has had a great summer and he continued his strong play on Sunday, demonstrating a vastly improved offensive skill set and better motor. Hayes has a terrific frame and is a strong player. He is a quality scorer who can connect on midrange jumpers and is also very comfortable with his back to the basket. Hayes even showed that he has the ability to step out and knock down a shot from beyond the 3-point line. He is a solid overall athlete and it is clear that Hayes is on the upswing as a player and a prospect.

TOP SLEEPER PERFORMER

Dennis Miles was a nice surprise for the Southern Phenoms. The 6’7 power forward is known somewhat, but he is by no means a big name. A class of 2013 prospect out of Meridian (MS), Miles is a rugged interior player who flat out produces. He is not a major athlete, but is a strong kid who is comfortable playing with his back to the cup. Miles works hard around the basket and is adept at scoring down there, as he does a nice job of finishing. He rebounds the rock quite well and he also puts in effort on defense, where he is also a solid player. Miles is somewhat of a junkyard dog, and he is a reliable low post option. The rising senior is a player who low-major to mid-major programs in need of a big man man should definitely be taking a look at.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Gregory Alexander of Kecoughtan (VA) is a big-time shooter in the class of 2013. A 6’4 shooting guard for BWSL Woods, Alexander did his best to keep his squad in the game despite being overmatched. Alexander has a smooth stroke and is capable of getting to the rim a bit. He is also a quality rebounder for his possession.

Zachary Brown was another player who did what he could to keep his team in a game against a squad with far more talent. A 6’6 class of 2013 small forward out of Klein Collins (TX), Brown is a long wing with a nice frame. The Texas Pro standout does a nice job of attacking the rim off the bounce and he is a capable scorer.

Riley Criswell was the best player on the floor in the Atlanta All-Stars win on Sunday morning. The 6’6 small forward out of Carrolton (GA) is a bit thin, but that does not stop him from being an effective rebounder in traffic. Criswell, a 2013 prospect, has a good handle and a nice head fake. He has a quality midrange game, both from straightaway and on the baseline.

Adrian Gonzalez is a 6’4 shooting guard out of Hialeah Gardens (FL) who runs with the South Florida Panthers. A class of 2013 recruit, Gonzalez is a a slasher who can really get to the cup off the bounce. He is a tough kid who finishes well, gets to the free throw line and simply makes plays at the offensive end.

Tyler Hadden is a solid big man out of St. Xavier (OH) who had a very nice showing for Shining Star Sports- Moman. The 6’10 class of 2013 center has a solid frame and very good hands. He scores around the basket and possesses a nice head fake. Hadden is not a major athlete, but he is productive and plays hard.

Kurt Hall of Team NLP is a solid wing prospect in the class of 2014. A 6’4 shooting guard out of North Chicago (IL), Hall was the best player on the court in the first half of his team’s morning contest. Hall has a strong, solid build and he is capable of scoring in a hurry. He shoots the ball quite well and can hit from midrange.

Marc Loving, a future Ohio State Buckeye, is a skilled combo forward who can really put points on the board. A 6’8 class of 2013 prospect from St. John’s (OH), Loving is a major mismatch due to his impressive combination of size, length and skill. The All-Ohio Red star is a quality 3-point shooter, but he is also quite adept at attacking the rim.

Devin Robinson turned in a nice second half for the Richmond Squires on Sunday evening. A 6’7 small forward who is now in the class of 2014, Robinson has some major length and is an intriguing player. He can shoot the ball and scores at the cup. The Christchurch (VA) prospect is a solid athlete with nice body control.

NOTES

The Alamo City Diamonds defeated the LT Rockets in overtime to win the 12th Grade AAU Nationals championship trophy . . . The semifinals of the D1 11th Grade (U17) AAU Nationals will feature the Arkansas Wings against the D12 Warriors and Team NLP against the Southern Stampede . . . Kansas was on hand for Tyler Roberson . . . Boston College was the only high-major program taking a look at Evan Boudreaux in the morning game . . . While we were not in attendance for it, we heard that Albany City Rocks guard Shadell Millinghaus dropped 29 points in a game on Sunday

RECRUITING UPDATES

Evan Boudreaux is a skilled 6’7 power forward in the class of 2015. A member of Team NLP who attends Lake Forest (IL), Boudreaux already claims scholarship offers from Northwestern and Boston College. Additionally, Boudreaux is receiving interest from Wisconsin, Illinois, DePaul, Virginia, UCLA, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, Oregon State, and Iowa. He has no favorites thus far, but has been to three schools. Boudreaux said he has tripped to Wisconsin “a couple times” and also visited both Northwestern and DePaul. He still has quite some time before he can sign an NLI, and Boudreaux said he plans to commit at some point prior to his senior season. He noted that a school’s location is an important factor to his parents, but that it is not a huge factor overall.

Nigel Hayes has what he calls a “rough draft” of his top five, which is comprised of Wisconsin, Xavier, Ohio State, Toledo, and Stanford. Of those, Hayes said that he has offers from Wisconsin, Xavier and Toledo. Asked if anyone is atop his list, Hayes replied, “Wisconsin is standing out the most right now.” The rising senior, whose only unofficial visit was to Xavier when he was in eighth grade, added that Wisconsin is coming at him the hardest. In addition to the schools already mentioned, Hayes said that La Salle, Lehigh, Duquesne, Minnesota, and Dayton are involved and that they all have offered. Hayes has no timetable for a commitment, but it will come after he takes visits in August and September. Those trips have not been scheduled yet, though.

Tahj Shamsid-Deen, a class of 2013 combo guard for the Southern Stampede, has a list of five finalists. The 5’10 rising senior out of Columbia (GA) said that he is still considering Richmond, Connecticut, Auburn, Butler, and Harvard. He said all of those schools have offered except for Harvard and noted that he does not have a favorite. Shamsid-Deen has only been to Auburn thus far, but he is planning some other trips. He will likely visit UConn in early August, followed by Butler on August 24th and then Richmond at the end of August. Shamsid-Deen said that he should know where he would like to go after he completes his visits. He would like to commit by the early signing period.

Torlorf Thomas of the Southen Phenoms is a quality 6’4 point guard in the class of 2013. After spending his junior year at Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery, Ala., Thomas is transferring to Meridian High School in Meridian, Miss. The rising senior has offers from Memphis, Western Kentucky and Southern Miss to go along with interest from Murray State, Auburn, Mississippi State, Troy, Marquette, Georgetown and Alcorn State. He noted that Mississippi State‘s recruitment has been on and off. Regarding his favorites, Thomas said, “It’s like a three-way tie between Memphis, Western Kentucky and Southern Miss.” Thus far, Thomas has been on unofficial visits to Memphis, Georgetown and Auburn.

Asked about his commitment timetable, Thomas responded, “Probably around September, right before the season starts. [People are] telling me to wait [until] December [so that] . . . I’ll have a lot more offers, but I want to go where I’m wanted.” Thomas went on to note that his mother and coaches are amongst those advising him to wait things out a bit.
