NJ PLAYAZ SPRING FLING REPORT — TOP PERFORMERS

Now that the 2012 NJ Playaz Spring Fling has come to close it’s time to assess the talent I witnessed over the three days of the event. Below are player rankings by class based on performance in this tournament only. These do not reflect my overall opinions of these players and are only snapshots of this weekend’s performances. Because 17U and 15U tournaments took place only the 2013 and 2015 classes are ranked as that’s where most of the players fell.

Top Player Performances 2013:

1. Kuran Iverson (NY Lightning) – The versatile forward played with energy all weekend and made some of the tournament’s most spectacular individual plays.

2. Terrence Samuel (New Rens) – Samuel was the leader and aggressor of his Rens team navigating them to the 17U championship.

3. Dayshon Smith (NY Lightning) – The 6’2�? guard made big plays for the Lightning in the biggest moments and was instrumental in their run to the title game.

4. Mike Young (NJ Playaz) – Young was the 17U tournament’s best rebounder and also showed off an expanding perimeter game.

5. Reggie Cameron (NJ Playaz) – The 6’7�? burly wing was a little bit inconsistent with his outside shot but still buried more than his share of long range bombs.

6. Manny Suarez (Albany City Rocks) – Standing close to 7 feet, Suarez showed range to the 3 point line and a tireless motor on the backboard.

7. Lawrence Beckett (NY Lightning) – One of the weekend’s best surprises, Beckett is a 6’6�? lanky forward with considerable skill from the high post.

8. Chinoso Obokoh (Albany City Rocks) – Obokoh looks the part as a 6’10�? athlete who moves very well for such a big man but is still very raw offensively and needs major work on the fundamentals.

9. Denzell Gregg (Albany City Rocks) – Gregg smoothly navigated the baseline both on drives and crashing for offensive rebounds to create points in the paint.

10. Shamiek Sheppard (New Rens) – The designated finisher for the champion New Rens, Sheppard made above the rim plays in transition for his team all weekend.

Top Player Performances 2015:

1. Marcus Derrickson (Team Takeover) – An inside / outside big man will great strength and a soft shooting touch, Derrickson is one of the nation’s elite 2015 players.

2. Aaron Ray (Team Scan) – Ray has a very complete game for such a young shooting guard and appears poised to be a star in NYC for the next 4 years.

3. Franklin Howard (Team Takeover) – The next big star at Gonzaga Prep (DC), Howard was at his best slashing to the rim and making plays in the paint.

4. Jesse Govan (NY Lightning) – Govan was the owner of the tournament’s most dominant low post move as his jump hook over his left shoulder was completely unstoppable.

5. Mohammed Touray (NY Lightning) – Between 3 pointers, midrange pull-ups, and finishes at the rim, Touray showed the ability to score in a variety of ways.

6. Isaiah Briscoe (NJ Playaz) – Playing in both the 15U and 17U tournaments Briscoe was nearly impossible to keep out of the lane on straight line drives from the top of the key.

7. Chancellor Ellis (Team Scan) – Ellis was one of the weekend’s top long range shooters making long balls in bunches and really spacing the floor for his team.

8. Teron Oliver (Team Takeover) – One of the biggest players in the 15U event, Oliver used his massive frame to dominate in the lane.

9. Kevin Dorsey (Team Takeover) – Dorsey is a plus athlete and a solid scorer but his incredible decision making from the point guard position is what sticks out the most.

10. Chris Atkinson (Team Scan) – Atkinson needs to reel in his play somewhat as he plays at a frenetic pace all the time but he has major talent in his small 5’8�? frame.
