BOSWORTH: SUNDAY’S NATIONAL PREP SHOWCASE BREAKDOWN

The National Prep Showcase was back in full swing on Sunday with top teams like Brewster Academy, New Hampton Prep, and the Tilton School all in action. While the rosters of most prep schools in this event are dominated by seniors and post-graduate players it was a pair of underclassmen that stole the show on Sunday.

Co-Headliners of the Day:

Nerlens Noel (Tilton School 2013) – With college coaches such as John Calipari (Kentucky), Steve Lavin (St. John’s), and Ed Cooley (Providence) on hand to watch him play Noel put on quite a show Sunday night. Having already established himself as the premier defensive big man in America during the summer with BABC, Nerlens showcased an expanding offensive game that brings his upside to a new level. He played on the wing for much of the first half and repeatedly used a deadly right to left crossover to attack the rim and finish with his left hand. Despite being right handed he seems to prefer using his left to finish around the basket and did so with startling efficiency in this game. If Noel can continue to develop his offensive skills to complement his defensive brilliance he will give Jabari Parker a serious challenge for the spot of #1 overall player in the class of 2013.

Noah Vonleh (New Hampton 2014) – For the second day in a row Vonleh was a star among stars and I would argue he was even better on Sunday. He continued to pursue rebounds with more aggression than any player in the event finishing with 14 although it sure seemed like more than that. Vonleh also showed off his improving jump shot knocking down four balls from behind the arc. He makes plays at the rim, passes the ball extremely well, and plays with constant passion and energy. Just as Noel is pushing Jabari Parker in 2013, Noah Vonleh is making a charge at Andrew Wiggins for the distinction of #1 overall player in the class of 2014.

Sleeper Performance of the Day:

Ryan Oliver (Northfield Mt. Hermon 2012) – An athletic shooting guard from Inglewood, California Oliver has slipped under the radar after a knee injury cost him his senior year at Loyola High School. Still not quite back to 100% he can make shots from behind the arc and also work his way to the rim in both directions. Oliver showed confidence in wanting to take big shots and delivered for Northfield Mt. Hermon in an afternoon victory.

Other Standouts:

TJ Warren (Brewster Academy 2012) – committed to NC State – For the second consecutive day Warren made scoring look easy finishing with 22 points without breaking a sweat. He works primarily on the right wing for Brewster and drives the ball either way to create space and knock down mid range shots. After laying everything in around the rim with a soft touch all weekend, Warren finally showed some nastiness hammering down a two handed baseline dunk plus a foul as Brewster pulled away in the second half. Mark Gottfried found himself a number one scoring option for the Wolfpack.

Semaj Christon (Brewster Academy 2012) – committed to Xavier - Sitting in the driver’s seat for Brewster’s high powered train, Christon has a rare combination of size, strength, and speed at the point guard position. He’s at his best working towards the rim and making plays in the paint but looked comfortable on his only three point attempt of the weekend. (He made it.)

Mike Tobey (Blair Academy 2012) – committed to Virginia – A guy whom I don’t think gets quite the credit he deserves, Tobey was relentless in the post for Blair Academy. He finishes with either hand out to at least 6 feet and pursues rebounds on both backboards. Standing a legit 6’11” Tobey is a true center that can both protect the rim on defensive end and serve as a low post scoring option on the offensive end.

Jared Terrell (New Hampton 2014) – The second half of New Hampton’s deadly sophomore duo, Terrell made electric plays offensively today. He had multiple dunks in transition and created a breakneck tempo for his team by showcasing blazing speed with the ball in his hands. Terrell has made huge strides over the last year and will become a high priority if that continues.

Dominic Woodson (Vermont Academy 2013) – Going against a frontline full of high major kids for La Lumiere the 6’10” Woodson rose to the challenge and played a fantastic all around game. He has a very strong body and can use it to bang in the post but also has major perimeter skills including legit three point range and above average handle for a big man. Woodson easily looks like a top 50 player in 2013 given his complete skill set.

Rapheal Davis (La Lumiere 2012) – committed to Purdue – One of the most physical wings in the class, Davis was born to play in the Big Ten. He attacks the basket like a bruising running back hitting the role creating contact and carrying defenders as he bullies his way to the rim. He needs to continue improving his outside shot to keep the defense honest but will provide toughness and energy for Matt Painter immediately.

National Prep Showcase Free Throws:

Georges Niang did what he ALWAYS does today, got easy buckets off his superior footwork in the post…… Goodluck Okonoboh can be somewhat of a forgotten man for Tilton playing next to Nerlens Noel but he’s a legit high major big man in his own right…… One high-major college coach, impressed with JaKarr Sampson, compared the Brewster forward to former UNLV star Stacy Augman. Sampson had Providence head coach Ed Cooley watching him very closely….. New Mexico commit Obij Aget is huge. 7’2” might not even do him justice… 2013 wing Donelle Munda has serious range on his jump shot for Vermont Academy… Massanutten’s PG Corban Collins is going to make a low/mid major very happy with his leadership and shot making… Basketball aside, it’s good to see Wayne Selden healthy and back at what he knows best…

Recruiting Updates:

Terry Brutus (Massanutten Military Academy 2012) – After considering committing to a school for the 2011 season Brutus decided to do a post-graduate year so that he could develop his skills more specifically on the perimeter. So far this fall he has been hearing the most from St. Bonaventure (out to see him today), Virginia Tech, George Washington, James Madison, UNC-Charlotte, and Arkansas.

Ryan Oliver (Northfield Mt. Hermon 2012) – Oliver’s recruitment has been coming from all locations and all levels according to head coach John Carroll and it should only increase as more schools realize he’s healthy again. He has interest from Oregon, Hartford, Delaware, and Ohio.

Noah Vonleh (New Hampton 2014) – Having re-classified to 2014 Vonleh intends to remain in that class to give himself more time to develop. He is “wide open” in his recruitment and plans to wait until his senior year to make a decision. Noah rattled off a sampling of schools that have offered including Pittsburgh, Boston College, Syracuse, Arizona, Kansas, Auburn, Georgia Tech, UCLA, and Georgetown.

Dominic Woodson (Vermont Academy 2013) – Another kid that remains wide open Woodson’s coaches mentioned he has offers from Oklahoma, Connecticut, Baylor, Miami, NC State, and Maryland with additional interest coming in from Florida, Illinois, and TCU.

Goodluck Okonoboh (Tilton 2013) – Okonoboh hasn’t narrowed down a list yet but when he does so a situation where he will have a chance to play and a team that can win are his most important factors. He listed offers from Connecticut, Syracuse, Providence, Pittsburgh, Michigan, NC State, and Texas.
