CONRAD CHAMBERS IMPRESSED BY RUTGERS TRIP

October 21, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

With the Team Scan AAU program this summer much of the attention was centered around Class of 2014 forward Chris McCullough, who quickly cemented himself as one of the top players in the country in the sophomore class. When one thinks of Friends Central in Philadelphia currently, the name of one of the elite players in the Class of 2012, Amile Jefferson certainly comes to mind.

However, Chester (PA) native Conrad Chambers is a player that is quickly building his own reputation as well, even if he is in the shadows with both programs. So far this fall, after a successful run over the summer with Team Scan, Chambers is happy with how things are looking at Friends Central and looking forward to a fun season.

“Things have been going well at school [and] the team is looking good,” said Chambers. “What I feel is best about the program is our coaching staff, how hard our team plays and how we are all like a family.”

Playing in the rugged Friends League of Philadelphia and on a team that will draw invites to numerous national events and showcases will give the 6-foot-1, 172-pound sophomore quite the introduction to competitive basketball at the high school level.

“What I’m looking forward to the most this season is the competition of high school basketball and how we are going to come together and play against all the talented teams in the area and also the nation,” he said.

Expect plenty of college coaches and scouts to come by and see Friends Central this season and many will be coming with the purpose to get a look at Chambers and monitor his progress this season. Chambers has already taken visits to Villanova (‘Nova Tickets), Rutgers (Shop for RU Gear), Providence (tickets), Connecticut (UConn Tix), St. John’s (tickets) and Seton Hall (SHU Tickets) while drawing recruiting interest from many others. Acknowledging it is still early in the progress, Chambers has no leaders, favorites or any list at this time.

“No favorites yet because they are all great schools and they all have great coaching staffs that really encourage their players to push themselves on and off the court,” he said. “I appreciate all the schools that are recruiting me, I’m not considering any yet, but I like them all.”

The Team Scan AAU program stresses academics as well as athletics and Chambers is clearly a fine example of their mission. The well-spoken young man might not be concerning himself right now with the recruiting process, but he has certainly thought through the important factors that will draw him towards certain programs recruiting him in the future.

“How the coach runs his offense and a family and fun environment,” said Chambers when asked what factors will lead him to consider programs in the future. “I like when a coach lets his player make mistakes and learn from them.”

Chambers feels he will fit best in an up-tempo style of play that utilizes a pick-n-roll system on the perimeter, so expect him to be studying styles of play this year.

There were plenty of options for Chambers last weekend to make visits and see some Midnight Madness-style events. The lucky recipient of his presence for the evening was Mike Rice and his Rutgers (Buy RU Tix) program and Chambers was very impressed with what he saw on the practice floor of the Scarlet Knights.

“It was the Midnight Madness and what I like most about it was first me and my high school coach watched the team practice,” said Chambers. “The way Coach Rice had his team practicing with so much intensity and they looked as if they were a family.”

There is definitely a new level of excitement around the program with Coach Rice at the helm and Chambers felt it with the fans excitement towards the program while visiting.

“I loved the way the fans show love to the team and let it be known that they care so much about the upcoming college basketball season and Rutgers basketball period,” he said. “I had a great time.”

While the Scarlet Knights certainly made an early impression on the Class of 2014 guard Conrad Chambers, expect many other teams to take their swing at convincing the fast-rising prospect to make their school his future home. Expect to hear plenty from this impressive prospect in the future and NBE will be certain to follow his progress throughout.
