One of the top prospects in the Class of 2013 is 6-foot-7, 195-pound forward Troy Williams out of Phoebus High School and the Boo Williams AAU program out of Hampton (VA). The nephew of legendary program director and head coach Boo Williams, Troy is a big time athlete at the wing position. He is at his best in transition where he can use his great speed to run the floor and then finish at the rim with big time leaping ability. Williams has very long arms on his wiry frame and uses them along with his elite athletic ability to be a high level rebounder from the wing. His jump shot needs work but his form appears to be solid so as long as Williams puts the work in he should be able to improve. He is a no doubt high-major wing and likely a top 25 player in the class when it’s all said and done. Showing that type of ability has raised his recruitment over the summer.
“Texas has offered [and] Kentucky became interested,” said Williams when asked this week by NBE if new offers and interest since the July evaluation period.
Closing out the evaluation period in Orlando (FL) with the Boo Williams AAU program Williams gave the full list of schools currently involved. Aside from the offer from the Longhorns and interest from UK Williams listed offers from Georgetown, Virginia, Alabama, Virginia Tech, South Florida and DePaul. He is also garnering interest from North Carolina, Duke, Louisville, Miami and Northwestern. He currently has no favorites but tells NBE a visit could be forthcoming to one of the schools on his list of offers.
“I’ll probably go to Virginia Tech for a visit in August or September,” he said.
Williams listed getting to the rim and finishing as the area of his game he improved upon the most and his favorite summer memory was doing just that.
“At Peach Jam,” Williams said of his summer’s biggest highlight, “when I crossed over and the defender fell and I finished it with a dunk.”
The move was captured on film and put online by 757 Preps:
So, even with offers coming from top programs and more likely on the way, Williams expects to take his time with the recruiting process and really begin to narrow everything down after the coming season and possibly decide next summer.
“Next summer either late June or early July,” he said of a commitment time frame.
As for a deciding factor, a program with a strong history of preparing players for the next level beyond college would stand a great chance in this recruiting battle.
“I would say the college that will shape me into an NBA player [with] all the in’s and out’s of being one,” said Williams.
In the meantime expect a big season from Troy Williams and he most certainly will be a player to watch throughout the high school season and next season on the spring AAU trail. NBE will certainly be watching…
