RECRUITING NOTEBOOK: ELITE PROGRAMS REACHING OUT TO 2013 PROSPECTS

The live July evaluation period is right around the corner. Once again NBE will be out in full force during both 10-day recruiting periods, stretching from East to West and North and South to keep up with all the recruiting information. It is always a fun process to see what college coaches are out on the recruiting trail and who they are watching.

In the meantime, the phones of top prospects in the Class fo 2013 have been ringing off the hook as colleges are permitted to contact a recruit once a month on the phone or via email. June 15th was the first day contact was allowed and programs wasted little time reaching out to prospects.

“Santa Clara called me at 12:00 on the dot,” said Tyler Ennis. “Oregon State, Santa Clara and Iowa State all did.”

Ennis is a 6-foot-3, 178-pound guard who plays on the AAU spring and summer circuit with CIA Bounce out of Canada. He attended St. Benedict’s in Newark (NJ) last season and has had a busy early summer season with trips to LA for the Pangos Camp and to the University of Virginia campus for the recent NBA Top 100 Camp. His play has drawn very good reviews and it shows in the latest list of schools that have been in contact since the 15th.

Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Louisville, Providence, Santa Clara, Iowa State and Oregon State are the new ones along with the ones I already had,” said Ennis over the weekend of the schools in touch.

Big East schools like Seton Hall, Rutgers and West Virginia have also been in the mix as well previously, too.

Ennis will have a busy summer playing with CIA Bounce and you can be certain college coaches will be there to check him out at every chance they get.

“Peach Jam, Southern Kings tournament and [AAU] Nationals along with our own Camp at the end of July,” said Ennis of the busy period ahead.

Another player expected to be under a fine microscope this summer is Major Canady, a 6-foot-3 guard out of Kiski Prep near Pittsburgh (PA). Canady will attend the Hoop Group’s Elite Camp Session I as the live period opens at Albright College in Reading (PA). After that he will be on the AAU circuit playing for both the 16-U and 17-U Basketball Stars of America club. Hoop Group’s WV Jam Fest and AAU Nationals are on the BSA schedule this coming July.

Canady has seen quite the variety of interest from colleges since the July 15th date came and went.

Notre Dame, Clemson, Tulane, Robert Morris, Cornell, Bucknell, Cleveland State [and] Monmouth [are schools that have called],” said Canady. “[Last Friday] I had a 4:30 appointment call with Shakka Smart of VCU [that] went well.”

Canady picked up new offers from Tulane and Robert Morris to go along with an offer previously extended by Duquesne. Tulane also made an impression by calling at Midnight.

“As far as leaders go, the ones who have offered are in the lead because they have committed a scholarship to me, all three that have offered have shown they are very interested [and with] Tulane calling at midnight,” said Canady. “Also, two of my goals for the summer are to attain scholarships from Clemson and Notre Dame, those are my top two as of now that have not offered.”

Canady will likely have the chance to earn those scholarships in the coming weeks on the court.

Malik Price-Martin, a 6-foot-9, 195-pound power forward out of Monsignor Edward Pace in Miami (FL) told NBE he had received early phone calls from North Carolina State, Florida State, Miami, South Carolina and Northwestern.

“Florida State and NC State offered,” Price-Martin told NBE, adding he has no favorites yet.

Expected to be one of New York City’s top prospects in the Class of 2013, Jermaine Lawrence had a busy first few days following the June 15th date.

“I got calls from Cincinnati, Kansas State, Syracuse, Villanova, Florida, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, and a couple more,” said Lawrence last Friday afternoon.

The 6-foot-8, 190-lb power forward from Benjamin Cardozo High School has loads of potential and will be a player many elite programs track closely in the coming month.
