Elite 2011 prospect shines in Primetime Shootout and talks recruiting

For the past year, many have referred to Michael Gilchrist as the best current high school player, regardless of class. This weekend at the 2010 Primetime Shootout Gilchrist only enhanced that notion.

On Friday night, the 6-foot-7 forward playing with St. Patrick’s of Elizabeth (NJ) scored 28 points in a 79-78 loss to Oak Hill Academy. St. Pat’s rebounded Saturday at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton (NJ) with a 74-56 win over NYC power Rice High School. Gilchrist scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, all in the first three quarters, and earned the game’s Most Outstanding Player award. St. Pat’s led 59-37 after three periods and began going to the bench often.

Following the game, Gilchrist spoke with Alex Schwartz for NBE Basketball Report to give an update on how things are going in his recruitment…

Michael Gilchrist is universally ranked as the #1 high school basketball prospect in the class of 2011. Following the action this weekend, he told NBE that his full list of schools he is considering consists of Oregon, Villanova, Texas, Kentucky, Michigan and Georgia Tech with each school offering a scholarship and having their head coach be the lead recruiter in their effort to land him. At this point, Gilchrist indicated those were the only six currently involved in the process and he does not favor any over the others.

“I like Villanova a lot,” said Gilchrist when asked about the only Big East school on the list.

He has been to ‘Nova four or five times as well.

Its been a difficult several days for St. Pats as they were banned from the state tournament following an investigation into pre-season practices and followed by its third, one-point loss to a Top 10 team in the national rankings, with Friday’s loss to Oak Hill. The win Saturday seemed to be a relief to Gilchrist and his teammates.

“It was alright,” Gilchrist said of the Primetime Shootut. “We went - really tough loss [to Oak Hill], it was alright, this weekend was cool. I did fine.”

Gilchrist indicated the head coach would likely be the biggest factor in his recruitment and he is open to any conference, and with a school from each BCS conference on his list of six, he looks to be true to his word.
