Updates on some of the standout performers from last weekend’s IS8 playoff action with a Halloween theme

by ZACH SMART

Juan’ya Green, a ghastly 6-foot-3 combo guard at Archbishop Carroll (PA) HS, is receiving plenty of Big East love. He’s sifting through letters, receiving the most interest from Villanova, Georgetown, Syracuse, Providence, Maryland, St. Joe’s and Temple.

“That’s all I can think of tight now,” said the Class of 2011 guard, after rattling off his current list.

The undecided guard said he would like to play in the Big East, a conference consistently over saturated with playmaking guards. He’s horror-house scary when he catches fire.

The tier of interest is picking up rapidly for David Appolon, a junior guard at Imhotep Charter. The Philly-bred baller is receiving interest from Marquette, Temple, Penn State and UNC-Charlotte. Marist, Delaware, and George Washington have offered. Imhotep coach Andre Noble describes the class of 2011 prospect as a combination guard.

“Picture him as a two-guard, he can play off the ball,” said Noble. “But he also operates offense.”

Rutgers is also making a push for Appolon, according to Noble.

Maurice Harkless, a dazzling 6-foot-7 forward at Forest Hills high school, is weighing his options. Connecticut, West Virginia, St. John’s and Virginia Tech have all been in active pursuit of the spindly junior. He’s capable of stuff the scorebook and BEASTING other teams.
——————-

Derrick Randall, a 6-foot-8 junior at perennial New Jersey powerhouse Paterson Catholic, enjoyed his recent visit to St. John’s. Randall, also being recruited by Providence, St. Joe’s, Virginia Tech and others, was “surprised how big the campus was.”

“I just went up there for the day, I had to get back the next morning because I had school,” explained Randall, who took in the Johnnies’ midnight madness event, Stormfest. “The visit went well. I’m from Brooklyn, so it wasn’t that far from home, but I didn’t realize the campus was so big.”

Desmond Hubert, a 6-foot-9 junior at New Egypt HS, is receiving the most interest from Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Villanova, Rutgers, Providence, and Cincinnati. All schools have presented the spindly, 195-pound Hubert with scholarship offers.
———————

Shaquille Thomas, a 6-foot-8 forward who will pan out if he becomes more aggressive and fully utilizes his potential, has already been offered by Syracuse and Providence. Pittsburgh, Oklahoma State and Xavier are also in the picture for the big fella…
———————

Myles Davis, a 6-foot-1 shooter/slasher/playmaker at St. Peter’s Prep, is receiving interest from Pittsburgh, Georgetown, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Providence, Rutgers, Wake Forest and Purdue. He is weighing his options. The kid who averaged 19 points, seven boards, and five dimes last season has been offered by Providence, Rutgers, St. Joe’s, Marist and Middle Tennessee State thus far.
——————-

Eric Copes, a 6-foot-8 Philly-bred forward recently transferred to TC Williams HS in Alexandria, Va. Regarded as a light Big East recruit, Copes has given a verbal to George Washington. Copes registered his presence at Imhotep in Philly last year, materializing as a defensive prowess. According to Noble, Copes is starting to emerge into more of a threat to score. Noble respects his decision to better his game down south, where much of his family resides and would like to see his former player progress.

“We’re super supportive of him,” explained Noble. “We wish him well.”

His ghost might still be in the gym, the spirit of the 6-8 stick figure with major upside.

Don’t sleep on Wally Sajimi, a guard at DePaul Catholic in Wayne, N.J. (a bike ride away from Don Bosco Prep where former Pitt forward Tyrell Biggs and former Boston College forward John Oates once shined) is reciving interest from Seton Hall, Providence, Penn State, Wisconsin, Baylor, Auburn, Iona, Rutgers, and a slew of others. St. Joe’s, Iona, and Rider have all offered the 5-foot-11, 175-pound lead guard, who plays for the Metro Hawks on the AAU circuit.
———————

C.J. Aiken, a spindly 6-foot-9 center from Plymouth Whitemarsh HS (Pa.), committed to St. Joe’s. Aiken had been a recruit of considerable interest to Rutgers.

“He has a lot of potential,” said Team Kobe coach Rodney Wescott of Aikens. “He’s got to hit the weight room and keep working hard overall, on everything.”
———————-

Tyrone Garland, another one of Wescott’s players on the Team Kobe circuit, committed to Virginia Tech over the summer. The 6-foot-1, Philly-bred point guard chose the Hokies over St. John’s, Temple, LaSalle, and St. Bonaventure.
