REEBOK HEADLINER (NJ) TRYOUT CAMP PLAYER REVIEW

June 10, 2009 by · 1 Comment

This past weekend many top basketball players from the New Jersey/NYC region ventured to Somerset (NJ) for the Reebok Headliner Tryout Camp. These talented ballers were hoping to land on the 2009 Invitee List of one of the prestigious RBK summer camps, including the Reebok All-American Camp (July 7-10), Reebok Breakout Underclass Camp (June 19-21) and Reebok Proving Ground Regional Combine (July 7-8).

With coveted spots on the line, the action was pretty intense on Sunday when Matt Whitfield stopped by to checkout the action. Here are some player reviews, with a couple recruiting notes, from his time in Somerset…

Tariq Carey
Freshman (2012) at Newark East Side High School. Good build for a young high-major prospect. Great speed and uses it well on defense. Nice alley-oop pass for the dunk to a teamate. Very, very active, great hustle as well. Nice no-look pass behind the backboard for the easy basket. Great shame-nbake move when heavily guarded where he back-tracked and switched hands for the easy lay-up. Plays very hard, I can see him being a top 50 player in his class when it’s all said and done. Good court awareness. Had another nice play where he basically did a circle with the ball in the paint, driving around the defenders, then taking the ball in for the easy bucket. Finished with 12 points in the game I watched. Earned invite to the Reebok Breakout Underclass Camp (June 19-21) in Dallas.

Tyrone Johnson
The Plainfield (NJ) two-sport star was coming off an injury where he strained his right scapula at the Bob Gibbons tournament. Told NBE he is at about 78% percent and it showed, as he didn’t seem to be flying up the court and driving it as hard as he usually does. The football player in him pressed on and he still took it to the hole, not just at his normal level of when he drives it’s almost magical like he’s walking on water. Today he didn’t have that magic. Finished with 14 points in the game, but Johnson showed enough to earn the invite to the Reebok All-American Camp (July 7-10).

Johnson told NBE after he has new interest from Penn State, Indiana, UCLA and Kentucky, who has been sending him a lot of mail. As for the Big East, Georgetown, Villanova, Rutgers and Seton Hall are the schools in the mix for the 2011 prospect. Johnson also told NBE the Big East is his conference of choice as he stated, “I’d like to play in the Big East.”

Myles Davis
Money three-point shot to start out of the gates. Slightly hobbling, as he told NBE later he had a problem with his knee, but still more than held his own in this game. Had several nice drives in this game, but didn’t seem to be as active as usual due to his knee. still, the offensively gifted guard finished with 20 points in this game and a strong camp led to an invite to the Reebok All-American Camp.

The class of 2011 St. Peters Prep guard stated to NBE this past season that he has already attracted attention from Louisville, Memphis, Notre Dame, Villanova, Kentucky, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Wake Forest and St. Joseph’s.

Jarelle Reischel
German native and now a sophomore (2011) at Point Pleasant Beach High School. The sophomore has a good build for his age with a good frame to grow into. His jumpshot looked smooth as well. Very active under the boards, one play Reischel missed two put backs in close getting the rebound each time, then got the ball again for the easy bucket. At 6-foot-6 or so, he has a decent handle is not afraid to power it to the rim either. Shots weren’t exactly falling his way early on though and did most of his damage under the boards including a spinning and hanging follow-up off a miss. Is a sophomore to watch.

In NBE’s Class of 2011 Intro: Jerelle Reischel, it is learned that he already holds offers from Rutgers and Monmouth with interest from West Virginia, St. John’s and Seton Hall despite being in the country just a year.

The other two invitees to the Reebok All-American Camp from the camp were Jarrod Davis and Derrick Randall, who was also listed as an invitee to the Reebok Breakout Underclass Camp. Davis, a class of 2011 small forward from Lakewood (NJ) continues to impress with his athletic ability and upside. Randall did not show a whole lot in our viewing, as these camp games can forget about the big men on the floor, but the class of 2011 paterson Catholic product has been having a solid spring and a trip to RBK in Philly could really catapult his national reputation.
