CLASS OF 2011 INTRO: GRANDY GLAZE

“I dont think I’m the next anyone, I want to be, and I will be, the FIRST Grandy Glaze“.

The season for St. John’s Catholic Prep may have ended last week with a loss to St. Frances Academy in the MIAA playoffs, but the career of 6-fot-6, 230-pound sophomore Grandy Glaze is just beginning to take off. His 41-point performance in the finale for his team reiterated what many in the mid-Atlantic region already know, Glaze is at the top of the list of 2011 prospects.

In his sophomore season, Glaze put up averages of about 22 points and 10 rebounds for coach Silas Cheung’s Vikings, who finished the season at 16-14. This spring and summer, Glaze will be found playing for the newly formed Team Takeover (Canada) squad on the AAU trail. The native of Toronto, Canada will be one to follow, and expect the line of college coaches to continue to grow as they see more of him in action.

West Virginia, Oklahoma, UNLV, Wake Forest, UCLA, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Oregon State, Georgetown, Maryland, NC State, Florida Gators, New Mexico State, Baylor, South Dakota State, Kansas State, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Akron [and] George Mason,” where the schools mentioned by Glaze when asked to name some schools that have shown early interest in his ability.

At the DTLR National High School Festival Presented by Nike last December, it was noted in the DTLR Player Evaluations that Glaze played with a motor that did not quit and showed a willingness to bang on the interior as well as the skill level to step-out and hit mid-range jumpers and the versatility to go back inside the paint and post-up offensively as well.

“Always finding a way to score,” Glaze responded when asked to describe his strengths on the court. “It is hard to stop me from scoring because I can start a fast break with good defense, run the floor and finish all in one play.”

Glaze also spoke of his versatility on the offensive end of the floor as he continues to work to improve on “everything” as he can score on drives from the wing, mid-range jumpers with an occasional three-pointer to keep the defense honest. NBE has seen first hand the ability to score off the offensive glass as well. In a game last month against powerful Montrose Christian (Game Report), Glaze showed he is smart, aggressive and fearless, traits that will surely have him coveted by Big East schools and those from all over the country. With a continued improvement on his game away from the basket, his upside is tremendous.

“No matter who it is, I will always find a way to score on them, either in the open court, slow, half court sets or just by hustling and wanting it more then everyone else,” Glaze confidently told NBE.

Glaze has a busy summer planned on the AAU scene, with Team Takeover: Canada playing a national schedule, starting with the Boo Williams Invitational in April. Glaze hopes to earn an invite to the Lebron James Skills Academy with his play at the Nike Jamboree Elite Camp. He will also set aside time to hit up to five elite camps of some of the schools recruiting him.

The very approachable Glaze is determined to let the recruiting process play itself out, but he has a pretty good idea of the major factors that will go into his decision.

“I do not have a time frame [for a college decision],” said Glaze. “I just want to be at a school where I will feel right at home, the academics are good, I like the guys on the team, I can relate and talk to my coaches openly about stuff outside basketball, and, most importantly, a place were people will work with me and push me everyday so I can become a better player each day. I do not want to go to a school that just lets players slack, I want a coach that’s gonna bust my butt.”
