JUCO BIG MAN HAS BIG EAST INTEREST
Currently Miami-Dade College is in the midst of a solid season, with a record of 14-5 overall and a 5-1 record in the Southern Conference of the FCCAA, good for a first place tie with Indian River. So far this season, Indian River and Miami-Dade have split their two meetings and their February 18th showdown is likely to decide the conference title.
Head coach Matt Eisele has put together a very talented roster with nine freshman and two sophomores. One of those sophomores is drawing quite a bit of college interest from recruiters as the spring signing period approaches.
“Steven Toyloy is being recruited by every conference in the country,” coach Eisele told the NBE Basketball Report. “His Top 6 as we speak are Kentucky, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Purdue, Baylor and Clemson, in no order,” the coach continued.
Toyloy is a 6’8, 255 lb power forward from West Palm Beach (FL) who is averaging about 11 points and 12 rebounds a game while shooting 62% from the field for Miami-Dade on the season.
“There have been multiple Big East Schools call on Steven or come watch him play, including UCONN, Seton Hall, St. John’s, West Virginia and Cincinnati”, coach Eisele said.
No doubt those schools have also taken interest in Eisele’s talented freshman class at Miami-Dade, which should position his club to be among the best in the JUCO ranks next season.
Highlighting that group is 6’9, 230 lb BF/C Will Coleman out of Glennwood High School in Columbus, GA. Coleman is averaging 12 PPG, nearly 10 rebounds a contest and 4.3 blocks a game. He is connecting on 59% of his shots from the floor in his first year with Miami-Dade. Coleman was just named National Player of the Week as a freshman and coach Eisele raves about the big man. “He has a chance to be special,” the coach remarked. “One of the best kids you will ever meet, almost an Angel from God.”
A pair of high-caliber guards are also freshman for this year’s squad and performing well. Kashif Carr out of Philadelphia is averaging over 16 points a game. Coach Eisele expects the 6’5 wing, along with Coleman, to be one of the top Junior College prospects in the country next season. James Beatty, a 6’0 point guard from Wilmington (NC), is averaging about 11 PPG, 6 assists and connecting on 41% of his three-point shots. Eisele believes he will be recruited at a ‘high-level’ next season.
Making next year’s squad more exciting is the presence of 6’7 wing Darnell Dodson, who is out of Eleanor-Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt (MD). Out of high school, Dodson signed with Pittsburgh and was thought to have a chance to be a contributor on this year’s team. However, troubles with the NCAA Clearinghouse forced him to leave Pitt and enroll at Miami-Dade. The plan for Dodson is to redshirt this year and head back to Pittsburgh with three years of eligibility, according to coach Eisele.
We’d like to thank Coach Eisele for taking the time to introduce us to his program. We will be certain to follow up with him in the future to track their success and see if we will be watching any of his players in the Big East in the near future.
