CATCHING UP WITH EVAN SMOTRYCZ

6’9 skilled forward now a member of 2010 class is on the move

Evan Smotrycz is on the move. With a move from Reading Memorial High School to the New Hampton School this coming season, Smotrycz will also move from the class of 2009 to the class of 2010. He has also had a very productive summer with the Mass Rivals that has his college recruitment on the move as well.

Standing in at 6-foot-9 and weighing in at 205 pounds, Evan Smotrycz offers an impressive offensive package for college coaches on the recruiting trail. When the NBE Basketball Report saw him at the Adidas Super 64 his versatility was on display as he hit from beyond the three-point line, scored with contact in the paint, handled the ball, made good passes and battled on the boards at both ends of the court. While Smotrycz could use some added weight on his frame, he is working on that as much as he can.

“I spend a lot of time in the weight room now working to improve my strength, cardio and foot speed,” Smotrycz told the NBE Basketball Report.

Currently, schools such as Providence, Georgia, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Michigan and Oregon State have thrown their hat into the ring as interested parties in the recruitment of Smotrycz. He recently took a visit to Providence and will head to Michigan this coming weekend (8/29 – 8/31).

“It was an unofficial visit (to Providence),” Smotrycz said. “I went up with Carson Desrosiers and Coach Skerry and Coach Davis gave us a great tour. I also had a chance to sit down and talk to head Coach Keno Davis.”

Overall, the visit to Providence rated quite high for Evan and he thinks the new regime has pumped new life into the program.

“I was very impressed by the overall look of the campus everything seemed brand new and well maintained,” Smotrycz continued. “I also really liked the look of The Dunkin Donuts Center’s new seats. They seam to have a great staff, and campus with all the tools to have an impact in the Big East.”

Now being part of the class of 2010, there is not hurry to narrow things down and Smotrycz is “just beginning to contrast and narrow down the schools” on his list. At this point, nobody really stands out, even the several Big East teams that all offer something quite different.

“They all have their own things that set them apart from each other along with very different styles of play that makes it really hard to compare them,” Smotrycz remarked.

For now, Smotrycz will work on getting his feet under him at the New Hampton School. But it is clear, he has the attention of high major programs and will be one to watch over the next year through his junior season in the prep ranks and AAU circuit next summer.
