46) CLYDE VAUGHAN
46. Clyde Vaughan: Pittsburgh - (1982-84) Mount Vernon, NY
Two years in the Big East: 21.4 ppg, 8.7 rpg
Four year career overall: 16.9 ppg, 7.7 rpg
One of the more underrated players in the league’s history, Vaughan only played his last two seasons in the Big East, but they were the best two seasons of his career. As a junior, he averaged 21.9 ppg and grabbed 9.2 rpg. His 22.0 ppg average in conference led the league. As a senior, he added another 21.0 ppg and 8.3 rebounds. His rebound totals were even more impressive when you consider the fact that he was a 6’4” small forward and he played when the league was arguably at its strongest.
“He put Pitt on the map,” longtime Big East announcer Mike Gorman told NBE.
Gorman is referring to Vaughan being instrumental in letting the rest of the league know that the Panthers were there to stay by leading Pitt to victories over Patrick Ewing-led Georgetown, Chris Mullin- led St. John’s, and Syracuse, all top 10 teams, in the school’s 1982-83 inaugural Big East season. In the three upsets, Vaughan averaged 23.3 ppg.
For his career, he totaled 2,033 points and 922 rebounds. His 19.5 ppg in conference play is 13th best in Big East history while his 8.5 rpg is 16th all-time.
