Rice junior has focus on upcoming season, recruiting can wait

By Zach Smart

For Jermaine Sanders, recruiting is an afterthought right now. Talk to him at the end of the season, this probably won’t be the case.

Right now, however, the subject of the electrifying 6-foot-4 wing’s recruitment is in the shadows.

So, what’s front-and-center on the Rice HS forward’s agenda? First and foremost is the ready-to-be filled scoring void left by high-volume scoring machine Durand Scott, who was claimed by June graduation.

Scott, now a freshman at Miami, was a highly sought after recruit last season. He ended up spurning UConn and Pittsburgh, both of which hounded him throughout the recruiting process last year, for the Hurricanes.

Sanders added on to his all-around game this summer. The budding Class of 2011 guard-forward proved he’s as versatile as any player in the city this season, capable of playing and guarding any position from 1-4.

Sanders has shed his supporting role/cast member role from last season. The onus is on him to take scoring matters into his own hands. He’ll have help from Shane Southwell and 6-foot-8 Kadeem Jack, but they’re more likely to pad the scorebook. The scorebook, that is, that’s dominated by Sanders’ relentless scoring.

He’s become more of a slasher, albeit his calling card is his shooting. He can heat up from beyond the confines of the arc, as he proved during the Big Apple Classic and in various games this season.

Sanders can pass and pull up for the mid-range jay. He cleans the glass and is cleaving to grand aspirations to lead the High School situated near the Apollo theater and the storied Harlem Underground fashion store on 125th St.

Now Sanders, who’s receiving interest from Syracuse, Villanova, Pittsburgh, St. John’s, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Marquette, Connecticut and a slew of others.

Offers from Villanova, Providence, and St. John’s are all on the table. Sanders said that those select three happen to be pushing the hardest for his services. Maryland has also popped up, but it’s hard to gauge how much interest they have.

Myles Mack, a 5-foot-9 waterbug guard from perennial powerhouse Paterson Catholic, is being recruited by Providence, St. John’s, Fordham, Hofstra, LaSalle, Rice, Western Kentucky and DePaul. He visited St. John’s this weekend, alongside recruits such as Tyrone Johnson, Devon Collier and Derrick Randall. Mack is slated to visit the campus of Providence on Halloween.

Jevon Thomas, a promising young 5-foot-11 guard who runs with the NY Gauchos, is starting to receive a heavy dose of interest from major Division-I programs. Kentucky, West Virginia, UConn, Arizona, St. John’s, Oklahoma, Syracuse and Villanova are all after the electrifying Class of 2012 guard. The blink-quick young gun has not planned any visits yet, but the interest has mounted following his summer on the AAU circuit.

Harold McBride, a 6-foot-1 guard, is down at Impact Academy in Sarasota, Fla. The transfer via St. Ray’s is a fourth-year junior. He’s receiving interest from South Florida, Seton Hall, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, and Siena.

Shaquille Thomas has morphed into a more determined big. The 6-foot-8 behemoth from Montclair HS has the skill-set to pan out at the next level, but he needs to be more aggressive.

“He needs to bring that killer instinct every game,” said Mark Jarrell-Wright, who coaches Thomas on the Playaz Basketball Club 17U scene.

“He’s definitely worked on it. He can do a lot of things on the court, but he take plays off. I tell him all the time, ‘you don’t want to be one of those kids that has a world of potential but doesn’t pan out.’ He doesn’t want to be one of those players who’s content with 10 points, when he could score 30. He can’t be one of those guys who’s happy with a few dunks when he could have done more. I can’t roll with that, as a coach. I want maximum effort.

What type of interest level has the Class of 2010 big received?

“It’s been pretty much most of the Big East,” said Jarrell. “All of them are pretty consistent. There’s no leader yet.”

On the Playaz Basketball Club, Thomas is also under the tutelage of former Rutgers player Marquis Webb.

Nedille Fincher, a burgeoning 6-foot-8 sophomore at St. Anthony’s, is starting to get interest from Notre Dame. After playing J.V. this past season, Fincher had aspects of his game refined and sharpened under coaches Ed Bright, Brian Coleman and former NBA backboard-breaking talent Darryl Dawkins with the New Jersey-based Sports University All-Stars.
———————

Rashad Andrews is another kid from Sports University who’s beginning to blossom, and Big East schools such as Notre Dame, DePaul and Seton Hall have started to take notice.

“Ra is extremely real,” said Bright. “He’s a special player. He’s played more defense with us this summer than he ever has before and we’re excited to see him take that to coach (Hurlie) this season. I think he’s a four-star recruit.”
