Jesse Morgan has long been a fixture in the Philadelphia basketball scene. Playing at Prep Charter earlier in his high school career and finishing up last season at Olney High School, the 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard always has had a big reputation as a scorer. In his senior season at Olney last year, after a brief stop at Apex Academy in Pennsauken, Morgan averaged 27.8 points a game, along with 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals, leading the Trojans to the Public League A Division regular-season title.

However, even with his ability to dominate games offensively, with a sweet jumpshot and nasty cross over to get to the rim, college recruiters have taken a wait-and-see approach with Morgan as he continues to work at getting his academic record in order. That quest has led him to a prep year at South Kent (CT) School, a private boarding school on a 500-acre campus in the hills of Litchfield County.

“Yes I moved from Olney [and] things are going great,” Morgan told NBE Sports about the move. “I’m getting stronger and better as a player and person. I choose South Kent because you can not get distracted at all and you get to stay in the gym until the lights go out.”

Morgan was impressive this summer playing at the Reebok All-American camp in Philadelphia, making the camp’s all-star game. He also showed his skills playing locally on the AAU circuit with the Philly Pride. When his shot is on from the perimeter, Morgan is tough to stop. He also has a strong enough handle and ability to pass the ball to take on the duties of running the point if need be.

While Morgan has yet to schedule any college visits this fall, his recruitment is definitely heating up since his strong summer play and move to South Kent. A steady stream of college coaches have come through the SKS campus in recent weeks and the list of schools contacting him is impressive, and growing.

“I’m being recruited by Pitt, Rutgers, UMass, UConn, Florida, Seton Hall, Temple [and] LaSalle,” said Morgan. “All these schools have been hereto see me.”

When Morgan starts to narrow the recruiting focus a bit he will be looking at the available majors at each school and the overall education he will receive. A good relationship with the coach and a style that fits his game will be very important. With a busy year ahead with a very impressive South Ken School squad, Morgan could emerge as a very valuable under the radar recruit for one college program that is able to sign him.

NBE Sports will continue to follow Morgan’s recruitment and definitely will be seeing South Kent in action this season.
