West Virginia finished classes this past week and Devin Ebanks was already back home this past weekend after completing his freshman year at Morgantown. The highly decorated recruit and centerpiece of Bob Huggins’ highly regarded 2008 recruiting class averaged 10.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game as a frosh.

Ebanks really turned things on the second-half of the season, reaching double figures in scoring 14 times over the last 16 games, which included six double-double efforts and an 18-rebound performance against Notre Dame in the 2009 Big East Tournament, where he also posted a his career high scoring performance with 22 in the loss to Syracuse.

Ebanks averaged 13.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists over those last 16 games, numbers he will look to build on during a highly anticipated 2009-2010 season head for the Mountaineers.

Ebanks took the took time out to chat with NBE this past Saturday at the IS8 playoff games back home in NYC…

NBE: What did you think of this past season?

Devin Ebanks (DE): It went pretty well for my freshman year. I just want to get better and get out there for next season.

NBE: How is it playing for Coach Huggins?

DE: You got to be tough-minded for him. I like it though because he pushes me, you know, so I get to that next level.

NBE: Did you have to hit the treadmill at all this past year?

DE: Yeah

NBE: Did everybody have to hit the treadmill?

DE: Yeah, everybody hit the treadmill. Yeah, I mean it’s not that hard, it’s something that during the course the practice you just really don’t want to get on the treadmill.

NBE: You guys had a very good Big East tournament run and then you an unexpected NCAA tournament, what happened there?

DE: We weren’t really ready to play that day. I mean, the guys were kind of complaining how they were tired and stuff and we came in a little sore, the season was wearing down, so I just feel as if we really didn’t really play as hard to get a win.

NBE: What are your expectations for next year’s team?

DE: Next year’s team, we could be like one of the top five best teams in the country next year. That’s our goal, I know that’s everybody’s goal on or team, so were just going try and [produce] it.

NBE: You obviously have Dalton Pepper, Dan Jennings, [Casey Mitchell] and Deniz Kilicli coming in. What do you think about the impact of those freshman you guys have coming in?

DE: We’re real excited. We’re real excited to get them. It will be a growing process for all of them. I just hope they hope they know what there doing and we’ll take care of them.

NBE: Is there one thing in particular you working on in particular this summer?

DE: Getting in shape and working on my game.

NBE: You and Dan Jennings have had a bond for a while?

DE: Yeah, that’s my little boy right there. I love Danny, I knew him since he was about 15/16 years old. It’s going to be fun having him around.

NBE: He’s already a big, big boy. Do expect to see him have an impact right away?

DE: Yeah, I mean I expect all are freshman to come in and contribute right away. We’re going to need them too. There going have to step in, especially Danny and Deniz, they going to be a part of the [keys] to the team. I’m just excited for all them to come.
