BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (6/5/2009)

June 5, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Another Friday afternoon is upon us! We have some good stuff planned from the weekend as we will have our write-up from the Frankie Williams Celebrity event from last night in Greenburgh (NY) where future Big East-er Dante Taylor was mighty impressive before Lance Stephenson stole the show after his fashionably late entrance. Also last night was the Rasual Butler All-City Classic in Philly and we will have some items from that excellent event as well as stories on a rising NYC youngster and Ray Mernagh’s column on the state of college basketball recruiting…

To whet the appetite this afternoon, there are stories on Tyrone Garland’s recruitment, a recruiting visit on tap for Derrick Williams, a feature on Mike Rosario, some coaching staff updates, a player transferring out of the Big East, a visit ahead for Davontay Grace, a Dante Cunningham NBA update and a look at Bobby Gonzalez and the direction of SHU.

Check it all out below…

Hopefully everyone got a chance to check out Pat Steven’s latest NBE Prep Corner – Vol 2.3 as he talked to some of the winningest coaches in the prep ranks on the 2009 Big East recruits that will be coming into the conference from prep school. Check out their thoughts on Alex Oriakhi, Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, Omari Lawrence, Mike Burwell, Mike Marra, Dan Jennings, Vincent Council, Malik Stith, Johnny Lacy, Sean Kilpatrick and James Southerland. it is an excellent piece that will give fans of the Big East a very unique perspective on some of the talent coming into the conference next season.

Speaking of Malik Stith, NBE contributor Zach Smart spends time Kickin’ It With Malik Stith as the incoming SJU frosh gets acclimated to his new life as a college student.

Elsewhere today, lots of stuff to go over. South Florida adds some beef to their future roster with a transfer addition from Kansas State. On the recruiting front, an article on Philadelphia 2011 prospect John Johnson, an update on elite 2010 prospect Will Barton and VERY detailed information on a pair of NY prospects from the class of 2011, Sidiki Johnson and Angel Nunez, that Arizona has an early bead on, but watch the Big East turn up the heat this summer.

Other news around the league includes a look at the nearly completed new facility at Syracuse, some NBA draft decision updates on Ater Majok and Scottie Reynolds, who both have the option to return to school if they choose, staff updates with Villanova and Louisville, banquet circuit notes from Jim Calhoun and Jamie Dixon and a look at the NCAA’s eligibility center’s thoughts on punishing schools after initially clearing a player…

In all today we have something, either in news or recruiting info, on 15 of the 16 teams. If you take a look at the linked article above from Pat Stevens, you will get something on all 16 Big East teams…those are news and notes covering the conference!!!

Read all about it today…

The troubles at USC might be close to completely wiping out their incoming recruiting class of 2009 as two more could be asking to be released this week. Kyrie Irving hints at a leader and others separating from the pack in his recruitment. Notre Dame and Providence have out of conference tournament’s scheduled for next season. Updates on Jerel McNeal and Jonny Flynn in the pre-NBA draft process. it looks like WVU forward John Flowers caused a little on-line furor. Speaking of creating a furor, Jeff Goodman does so with his ‘coaches on the hot seat’ look. Of the 12 highlighted across the country, four reside in the Big East.

Hope all our readers had a nice Memorial Day weekend! Of course, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and once again the summer will bring exciting action on the basketball court throughout the country. This weekend NBE should also be able to spend some time covering the NY2LA Invitational on the Marquette campus and we also look forward to covering Hoop Group Metro Summer Showcase and other events throughout the next month leading up to what will definitely be an exciting July as the college coaches will hit the evaluation trail like caged animals being released from captivity after the NCAA did away with the April evaluation period.

There are lists from dozens of players and everyone will find something of interest with their program today. Here is another run through some news and notes in the Big East as the month of May seems to drag on…

Another player has left Rutgers as a transfer, but they might have a player trying just as hard to come into the program as a transfer, but his current team is holding him hostage! Marquette might be continuing the pipeline of players from under Wisconsin’s nose, but this one may sting even more since the player is a current UW verbal commitment. Also, recruiting updates on Alex Rossi, Ben Brust and DePaul’s continued efforts to beef up their staff with local recruiting talent and their offer of a local 2011 developing big man. Also, Pittsburgh basketball in the local area is having a renaissance and DeJuan Blair could be a big factor in that continuing. Tom Droney could be the next high-major talent from the usually barren area of basketball talent.

Also, DePaul looks to be adding a quality walk-on, USF is interested in a K-State transfer, there is an article on Pitt redshirt forward Dwight Miller and Jamie Dixon gives a brief look ahead ot next year in the Big East…

Let’s take a quick run through the Big East this morning and see what is news worthy. It has been rather quiet the last few days, outside of the continuing Rick Pitino stories, but it looks like the UL coach has nixed any thoughts of him leaving the Cards for a return to the NBA at this time.

On the recruiting front, another story on Will Barton for readers to check out as well as the news from ‘Fab’ Melo’s recent visit to Syracuse as well as a brief update on Alex Rossi, Chad Jackson, Latavious Williams and Jaquon Parker, sho got some serious spring looks from Big East teams after de-committing from ODU and has now opted to take an extra prep season.

Elsewhere, Mike Rosario will spend much of this summer playing outside the 50 states, including a trip to Spain with his RU teammates. Will everyone on the current Scarlet Knights roster be joining him in Spain? Another player is rumored to be leaving Fred Hill’s program.

Luke Harangody embarks on his NBA audtion tour, Villanova looks to be closing in on completing their coaching staff and Georgetown’s AD makes a curious move to another job…

All these are below in today’s News & Notes of the Big East…

Following the holiday weekend, Monday has been a quiet day for news around the Big East conference. Jonny Flynn’s situation of whether or not he signed with an agent seems to be the biggest story, at this point, all signs point to that being very imminent and he will pass on his final two years of eligibility at Syracuse.

A few reviews on the Derby Festival Basketball Classic and the Capital Classic where Louisville and Villanova recruits impressed onlookers. Also an article on UC recruit Sean Kilpatrick and his high hopes for his college career with the Bearcats, Jeff Goodman has updated the transfer list and six Big East student-athletes from the 2008-2009 season are currently looking for new homes to continue their college careers. On the recruiting front, articles on Matt Brown, who could be a Big East football or basketball recruit, and JJ Moore can be found as the pair could gain more Big East interest as the spring and summer AAU season continues.

Happy Easter to one and all!!

In today’s News & Notes around the Big East we have blurbs and links on the latest news around the Big East. Some of the most interesting notes are coming out of Portsmouth were many college seniors are auditioning for pro scouts and agents for many professional leagues in hopes of continuing their basketball careers. Even though they are not there, the latest news on the futures of Eric Devendorf, Luke Harangody, Jonny Flynn and Paul Harris was a hot topic being discussed.

The Providence Journal takes a look at the Big East for 2009-2010 and all 16 teams. Also, an update on Providence recruiting for 2010 can be found. Pittsburgh was already stung by an early NBA draft declaration by DeJuan Blair and a potential recruit to help ease the loss commits elsewhere on Saturday, leaving next year a true test for Jamie Dixon. Pitt’s rival West Virginia is looking anxiously to next season with many key returnees and an incoming class that is well-regarded, including Turkish big man Deniz Kilicli.

Finally, in other news, UConn’s latest verbal commit, Darius Smith, makes his official visit to the Connecticut campus this weekend. Seton Hall losses a frontcourt player to transfer and they continue to try to add depth to a very thin front line through recruiting.

For now, we run through some other news and notes in the Big East that might be getting swept aside by the hoopla in Detroit. Notre Dame had thoughts of playing this weekend in Detroit earlier this season, instead their season concluded in the NIT semifinals and now they face quite an overhaul for next season. Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn is testing the NBA waters, Pitt’s Jamie Dixon will let his actions continue to speak for his stance regarding rumors of him potentially leaving Pittsburgh. DePaul continues to battle the perception of a program heading nowhere and heading there rapidly. Could Rutgers be in position to add an impact transfer this spring?

Elsewhere, Georgetown has reached out to a former Kentucky commit, Connecticut hopes the fallout from the Y! Sports expose on their possible NCAA rules violations in recruiting does not negatively impact their position with their 2009 commitments. Also, a look at a player strongly considering joining the UConn class of 2009 and a look at their latest 2009 commitment. Also, updates on Carson Desrosiers, Evan Smotrcyz, Lance Stephenson and Taran Buie, who looks to have made a decision on his college future already.

Also, a one on one with a Big East official, who was just honored as the nation’s top referee.

The regular season finales began last night and Villanova got what they wanted while they will send Providence on to New York for the 2009 Big East Tournament next week in New York City at Madison Square Garden still in search of what they are looking for.

While Dominic James is done for the season, Marquette’s NCAA seed could be adjusted down even more than their late season losing streak would have on its own with James. Pittsburgh is hoping their floor general is good to gon on Saturday for the highly anticipated match-up with Connecticut.

DePaul sophomore Dar Tucker looks into leaving college for the NBA while Rutgers sophomore Corey Chandler has not made a final decision to leave the Scarlet Knight’s program as of yet.

There is a story on top 2010 target Carson Desrosiers for readers as well as our game preview on tonight’s Big East action between Notre Dame and St. John’s.
