2011 BOB GIBBONS TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS: DAY THREE

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 2011 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions came to a close on Sunday with the three final game sets. When it was all said and done the top honors belonged to the Southern Phenoms, as the Mississippi-based squad won the U17 National bracket, defeating the South Florida Panthers by a score of 59-53.

In the U17 Select final, Garner Road knocked off Belmont Shore by three, 76-73, behind 39 points from 2012 wing TJ Warren (see our scouting report and recruiting update on Warren HERE in our TOC Day Two coverage). Garner Road also won the U16 National crown, overcoming the Long Island Lightning in the title tilt. At the U15 level, it was Team Loaded over Team United in the National bracket and BWSL defeating Ty Lawson Team Takeover for the Select championship.

Once again, NBE Basketball Report had the opportunity to speak with a few players and compile some scouting reports.

At this point, 6-foot-1 class of 2013 point guard Ikenna Iroegbu of Belmont Shore only has interest from programs in the Pac-12. However, with Iroegbn set to attend Oak Hill Academy (VA) next year, that is set to chance for the talented underclass floor general.

Although Iroegbu currently lists no scholarship offers, he is receiving interest from Arizona, UCLA, Cal, USC, Colorado, Oregon and Washington State. While USC and Cal are the line schools he has visited, Iroegbn has a different program atop his list.

There is nobody in the Class of 2012 who has the athletic gifts that Parrea does. He has fans holding their breath at what he will do next. It doesn’t show in his numbers at times however due to his lack of fundamentals. His is frequently outrebounded by more fundamentally sound opponents due to lack of boxing out.

School List: Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Marquette, Michigan, Minnesota
On the exact opposite end of the spectrum is Marrero who was possibly the best technically sound rebounder in the gym. He could stand to have a tad more touch around the basket which is where he should stay offensively.

Marcus Paige: G (All-Iowa Attack)/6-0/160
Committed to North Carolina
Can’t help but draw comparisons to current Tar Heel point man Kendall Marshall. Paige is a little more athletically gifted than Marshall while he is not quite as crafty with the ball.

IMPROVING 2012 BIG MAN LANDEN LUCAS SEEING RECRUITMENT EXPAND

Landen Lucas made the difficult decision to leave family and friends at Sunset HS in Portland (OR) for the basketball powerhouse Findlay College Prep in Henderson (NV). The 6-foot-9, 235-pound big man has often thought about being home, competing for titles with the friends he grew up with family close by, but now he will prepare for a spring AAU season with the Northwest Panthers program and the chance to show those home how far he has come.

“Im looking forward to showing people how much I really have improved this season,” Lucas told NBE yesterday on what he is looking forward to the most on the AAU scene.

Before AAU basketball for Lucas gets underway there is some unfinished business for him and his Findlay Prep teammates.

“Its been good so far,” Lucas said of his season with Findlay. “[I] Learned a lot this season and worked with my team to get through a lot of ups and downs. Highlight will be when we win this national championship at the end of the month.”

KELVIN AMAYO WORKING WAY TOWARDS SPRING DECISION

6’5 ‘combo’ guard continues to see building interest heading towards late signing period for 2011 class

Coaches scouring the country for talent to add to their college programs in the spring recruiting period have been finding their way to NIA School in Newark (NJ). Alif Muhammad’s program in the Garden State has a few players still available in the Class of 2011 and 6-foot-5 G/F Kelvin Amayo is one garnering plenty of high major attention, along with some pretty impressive scholarship offers.

This past weekend a BIG EAST head coach made a trip to the National Prep School Invitational to check in on Amayo. On the floor, Amayo like to get out in transition and drive aggressively to the rim. His strong upper body enables him to get past most defenders and finish with contact, while his speed makes him to tough to stop on a fast break. He is always in attack mode, getting to the lane at will. He continues to make strides with his shooting and other perimter skills, making him a very intriguing prospect in the late signing period for college basketball.

HOOP HALL CLASSIC – - DAY THREE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Monday of the Hoop Hall Classic is annually the most loaded day of games, complete with a quartet of games on ESPNU. This year, the quality on Martin Luther King Day isn’t as high, but there are still some big-time contests. Prior to the television match-ups, Anthony Davis and Perspectives (Ill.) and Patrick Connaughton and St. John’s Prep (Mass.) got things kicked off. The first ESPNU game was Christ the King (N.Y.) vs. Westchester Country Day School (N.C.), sans an injured Quincy Miller. Following that was a battle between arguably the top players in the classes of 2011 and 2012 with Michael Gilchrist and St. Patrick (N.J.) taking on Bishop Gorman (Nev.) and Shabazz Muhammad. LeBryan Nash and Dallas Lincoln (Tex.) played Findlay Prep (Nev.) and then Academy of the New Church (Penn.) faced Boys and Girls (N.Y.).

NATIONAL PREP SHOWCASE: DAY THREE

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A long weekend of basketball culminated Sunday with another six games between the top prep schools in the country. It started off with an easy Brewster Academy (N.H.) win over a hard-working but fatigued Princeton Day Academy (Md.) club. After that came a battle between Maine Central Institute and Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.), where MCI pulled away in the second half. Kiski (Pa.) and La Lumiere (Ind.) was an interesting match-up on paper due to the frontcourts of both teams, but Kiski emerged victorious. NIA Prep and New Hampton had a back-and-forth battle that featured big leads and subsequent comebacks, but in the end, NIA Prep was too athletic and balanced. Tilton (N.H.) came out in a big way against Wilbraham & Monson (Mass.), blowing them out from the opening tap. The final game of the event kept everyone interested, with Blair Academy (N.J.) holding on to beat St. Andrew’s (R.I.). Here’s a look at some noteworthy players from the final day, starting with a player we will see in the BIG EAST next month:

Enosch Wolf, 2010, Wilbraham & Monson: Wolf will join Connecticut at the end of the fall semester, which comes in a couple of weeks. The German native is more versatile than one might think, showing off an ability to handle the basketball and step out to knock down outside shots. The 7-foot-1 lefty is very mobile and can run the floor. His stroke from the free-throw line is solid and he defends well. Moreover, Wolf is an effective rebounder – something the Huskies are lacking this year.

ORLANDO AAU UPDATE: PART V

On Tuesday champions were crowned in the 17-U AAU Super Showcase as bracket play began in the 16-U AAU nationals and pool play started in the 17-U AAU nationals. The big trophy went to the local Each 1 Teach 1 squad as Austin Rivers, Trevor Lacey and company defeated the St. Louis Eagles by the score of 78-60 in game shown by ESPNU. In the Silver Bracket, it was East Coast Elite/Delaware Panthers taking the crown. A couple of the big names for ECE included Pittsburgh-commit Jaylen Bond and uncommitted 2011 big man Malcolm Gilbert.

FINAL KING CITY CLASSIC PLAYER EVALS & UPDATES

CLEVELAND – After a fairly lackluster experience at the LeBron James Skills Academy – aside from the hype of having James there, of course – the 75 or so players from that camp traveled about 40 minutes north to Cleveland State University for two days of tournament-style games. The players, broken into eight teams, competed in two games each before entering the playoffs. It was far easier to evaluate the prospects in the game-setting than it was in the drills and the controlled scrimmages.

While our attention is now squarely on the finals of the Nike Elite Yough Basketball League being played at the Peach Jam in North Augusta (SC), we take our final look back at last week’s King City Classic. Previously, in our King City Classic Update (Part A) we took a look at Big East commits such as Wayne Blackshear, Tyrone Johnson, Michael Carter-Williams and James Price and their performances when we were watching. In King Citty Classic Update (Part B) NBE updated notes on mega-prospect Anthony Davis as he discussed his three finalists, talked with LaQuinton Ross about offers and visits and spent time with Myles Davis as he discusses the new offer from ‘Nova and the impact of friend Tyrone Johnson committing to the Wildcats recently. ADIDAS INVITATIONAL EVALUATIONS & RECRUITING UPDATES (PART A)

The Adidas Invitational threatened to turn into the New Heights Invitational — that will happen when a team full of tough, NYC-area ballers takes out a juggernaut full of “high-major” prospects like New Heights did to Indiana Elite/Team Indiana in the quarterfinals early Thursday morning. New Heights then repeated the performance in the semifinals, where it fought back from a double digit deficit to defeat the New England Playaz. Alas, the run ended in the final when New Heights lost to the LeBryan Nash-led Dallas Mustangs 69-58. It was an impressive run by a New Heights squad not expected to challenge for the title this week and plenty of college coaches were here to witness it.

The July recruiting period is quickly approaching and earlier today NBE caught up with 2011 big man prospect Joey Delarosa to get an update on his recruitment and summer plans, which might include a couple visits to check out Big East programs. we also continued to check in on prospects in the class of 2012 and see what colleges have called on them. The last week and a half has been busy for 2012 prospects as coaches are allowed to call prospects in the rising junior class once per month over the next year and the first contact was allowed back on June 15th. Today we were able to find the latest on Nick Stauskas, who had an impressive NBPA Top 100 camp performance, and Anrio Adams, who was equally impressive when NBE saw him earlier this spring on the AAU circuit.

JUNE 16 RECRUITING NOTEBOOK

With the arrival of June 15, the book officially closed on the class of 2010 and opened for the class of 2012. Schools were allowed to offer rising juniors and contact them directly. Coaches are allowed to call prospects in the class of 2012 once per month over the next year, beginning on 6/15. Next summer the allotted amount rises to twice per week per institution. Top prospects from around the country had their phones blowing up all day and night, with head coaches and assistant coaches keeping tabs on their main targets. NBE Basketball Report was also working the phones, seeing which schools were talking to which players, and who was showing the most interest for certain players.

RUMBLE IN THE BRONX: THE FINAL RUNDOWN

BRONX, N.Y. – As the weekend wound down at Fordham University in the 2010 Rumble in the Bronx, several surprises occurred across the bracket in the playoffs. The top AAU team in the country, the NJ Playaz, suffered an upset at the hands of New Heights in the quarterfinals, while East Coast Elite, a team from Delaware, was rolling through the bracket. The New England Playaz and New York Gauchos also dropped surprising match-ups in the quarterfinals. In the U-16 division, no New York teams ended up reaching the championship game, as a loaded BABC team would take on the PA Playaz and its one-man show of Ryan Arcidiacono in the finals. Despite most of the top talent not appearing in the semifinals and finals, the Rumble in the Bronx did not lack for excitement.

Domonique Bull, 2012, BABC: Bull, one of the top New England guard prospects in the class of 2012, is built like his last name would indicate. He is very strong with the ball and has improved his athleticism and quickness since last summer. Bull can get into the lane with the bounce and distribute it to open teammates for easy baskets. He rarely plays out of control, and remains calm under pressure. He did not turn the ball over much, and was highly effective.

Bull, who passed up the NIKE Hoop Jamboree to attend the Rumble in the Bronx, is receiving interest from Western Kentucky, Miami (Fl.), Providence, Florida and more. He likes Miami (Fl.) a lot, and will attend the Elite Camps of both Florida and Wisconsin.

MAJOK MAJOK GETTING LATE START ON VISIT PROCESS

ACC trips and more on tap for Majok as an unsigned big man in 2010 class looks to decide on college

While the rest of the uncommitted seniors were taking their final visits and announcing their commitments, Majok Majok was in a holding pattern.

He physically wasn’t able to get on an airplane.

“He had ear surgery a few weeks back,” Northfield Mount Hermon coach John Carroll said at the time. “He hasn’t been able to get out and visit.”
