RYAN ARCIDIACONO ADDS TWO MORE OFFERS
September 1, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
While it has been just over three months since Ryan Arcidiacono blew up nationally with a strong spring performance on the AAU circuit with the PA Playaz, NBE has been following the class of 2012 guard out of Neshaminy (PA) for quite some time. It came as no surprise to us when Arcidiacono blew became the talk of the Bob Gibbons’ Tournament of Champions back on Memorial Day weekend with his gritty toughness and ability to raise the play of his entire team. We have been seeing him do the same time and time again since June of 2009 when we first began writing about him as one of the top prospects in this rising junior class.
Arcidiacono still might not be the household name he deserves to be, but that is definitely changing as his recruitment continues to rise toward the level of the top players in the class. Recently two more Big East offers came his way and some of the elite teams nationally are lining up to take a look at him at open gyms coming up later this month.

BASKETBALL RECRUITING NOTEBOOK: FIVE-STAR CAMP NOTES
August 30, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
On Sunday Matt Whitfield of NBE ventured to Brewster (NY) for the invite-only Five-Star Super Session at the Brewster Sports Center. Top rising sophomores, juniors and seniors from the Northeast and a few high-level “out-of-towners” participated in the two-day camp which concluded with an Orange/White All-Star game Sunday afternoon.
In addition to games and skill instruction with Five-Star’s innovative and historic teaching stations, the mental aspect of the game and success was also covered as campers spent three-sessions with sports psychologist and performance coach Dr. Pam Brill who authored the book, The Winner’s Way. Dr. Brill covered strategies to players that will help them reduce mental clutter, frustration with teamates and coaches and how to perform under pressure.
In this recruiting notebook, players such as DeAngelo Harrsion (2011), Tyler Harris (2011), Myles Davis (2011?), Vaughn Gray (2011), Mike Young (2013), Jabarie Hinds (2011), Shaquille Thomas (2011) and Reggie Cameron (2013) talk about recruiting, offers, visits and more. ANTHONY FIELDS RECRUITING UPDATE
August 16, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
Michigan native seeing an uptick in his recruitment after solid July on AAU circuit
by RAY MERNAGH
Anthony Fields is a guard who likes to push the ball and for that reason, among others, he caught my eye during the grassroots season playing the point for D-1 Sports.
Fields is from Michigan (Detroit area) but took his game to Quality Education Academy in North Carolina to play for coach Issac Pitts’ loaded squad.
Fields says that he has options right now at the high-major and mid-major level and ultimately his decision will be made wherever he feels is the best fit regardless of level.
“Seton Hall, Temple, Western Michigan, Rice, Penn State and Minnesota will all be coming to school to watch me workout on September 9th,” said Fields, “after that I’ll sit down with Coach Pitts and figure out where I want to visit and probably make my decision by late October or early November.”
Asked if he has any visits planned right now he said only one: “I’ll be visiting Western Michigan on September 18th.”
Fields said he thought playing with D-1 Sports on the AAU circuit helped him for a couple of reasons — “I got to play with great players like Quincy (Miller) and Deuce (Bello) plus I’m a up and down guard and they really let me play with a lot of freedom so I think that helped me.”
Fields can get to the rim at will off the bounce and finish once there. He can also find people in transition and off of a dribble-breakdown. He also showed the ability to hit a mid-range pull-up when I watched him although not consistently. Fields thinks that any of the schools he mentioned would take him if he expressed he wanted to commit but conceded that not all of them have officially offered.
Here’s a YouTube clip of Fields that shows his incredible speed and quickness with the ball in his hands.
Here’s another that shows his finishing ability around the rim.
We will definitely stay in touch with Anthony up until that time when he decides what the best fit is for him.

ELI CARTER LOOKING TO CUT LIST
August 15, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
Class of 2011 prep guard working on cutting down long list of suitors
Eli Carter has seen his recruitment come a long way in the last 12 months. After completing last summer as a 2010 prospect, Carter prepared for his senior season under (now) Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony’s of Jersey City (NJ) as a little-recruited shooting guard. Eventually a strong senior season earned him a scholarship to St. Bonaventure of the Atlantic 10, but now Carter has decided to take a post-grad season and his recruitment has been re-opened.
“My list right now is Texas A&M, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Virginia, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, Charlotte, Richmond, Creghton and Temple,” Carter told NBE’s Matt Whitfield by text Saturday night.

MALCOLM GILBERT NARROWS LIST; DEVIN COLEMAN HAS TWO LEADERS
August 8, 2010 by NBE Blogger · 1 Comment
A couple class of 2011 prospects have begun to whittle down their college lists as the recruiting process continues toward a conclusion for many prospects. Academy of New Church big man Malcom Gilbert has narrowed his list to six schools and Friends Central guard Devin Coleman has two favorites among his list of schools.
Malcom Gilbert is one of the better big men still available in the class of 2011. The product of Bryn Athyn (PA) Academy of the New Church informed NBE this afternoon that he has narrowed hos list of schools to Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Wake Forest, Virginia and Clemson.
Gilbert competed on the AAU scene this summer with both East Coast Elite and City Rocks. NBE saw him in Orlando recently and Gilbert is a legitimate 6-foot-11 and is long (7′4 wingspan according to his father) with good athleticism. He alters a ton of shots defensively when he’s not blocking them. He can hit the 10-12 foot shot and scores inside using his length.
Academy of the New Church competes in the Friends school league near Philadelphia. Another league program, Friends Central, also has a high-major prospect in 6-foot-3 guard Devin Coleman, who runs with Philadelphia Team Phenom on the AAU scene.
Coleman told NBE he is currently considering offers from Rutgers, Iowa, Minnesota, Richmond, Temple, La Salle, Jacksonville and Siena with two schools currently standing out in front as his favorites.
“Leaders are currently Iowa and Rutgers“, said Coleman.
Gilbert and Coleman are just a few of the players in the class of 2011 working through the process and coming closer to making a college decision. Stay tuned at NBE for more updates on others in the rising senior class int he coming days…

ORLANDO AAU UPDATE: PART VII (KADEEM JACK CUTTING LIST SOON)
July 30, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
The action in Orlando countinued strong on Thursday as they are now down to the final 32 teams for the 17-U AAU National championship and the championship game in the 16-U age group is set for Friday afternoon.
In the 16-U championship bracket, it will be BABC Sophs, led by the defensive prowess of Nerlens Noel taking on All-Ohio Red at 4 PM on the main court at the ESPN Wild World of Sports Complex. BABC got past Rising Stars Gold, 48-35, to earn their spot in the championship. With Noel acting as a goalie and blocking anything that comes near him, BABC has allowed just 36 points a game this week in Orlando. Georges Niang has also been outstanding and complimenting Noel inside, especially on the offensive end of the floor.
All-Ohio Red got past Arkansas Wings, 80-62, to advance to the championship game, which is a rematch of the 16-U AAU Super Showcase semifinal from earlier here in Orlando. That game was won by the boys from the Buckeye state, 47-42, but BABC will have Noel this time.

RECRUITMENT OF DANIEL OCHEFU GETTING BUSY
July 26, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
2012 big man from Westtown (PA) Friends is becoming a very hot name in the rising junior class
While the name Daniel Ochefu is not a common name among college basketball fans and recruitniks, the name is becoming very popular among college coaches. Afterall, the 2012 Westtown (PA) Friends big man has not been out on the AAU summer circuit until the live period began earlier this month as the Westtown program hits the AAU trail together, led by head coach Seth Berger. While a subdued summer schedule might not give Ochefu the name recognition of other big men in the class, the benefits of playing with his high school teammates is not lost on him.
“It was really good for us to play together because we worked on our offense, defense and chemistry,” Ochefu told NBE Sports.
The 6-foot-10, 225-lb center is seeing his recruitment explode as word has reached college coaches of his talents.
You can log-in or sign up for NBE Premium access by SUBSCRIBING (HERE) for as low as $2.08 a month with our annual introductory membership to read more on Ochefu’s recruitment, as he hears from top programs as his recruitment gets busier, as well as any of our Premium Content Articles & Event Coverage.
SUPER 16 SHOWCASE NOTES
July 13, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
by RICHARD KENT
The event was held at the brand new TD Banknorth Arena on the campus of Quinnipiac University. Quinnipiac’s head coach Tom Moore, formerly an assistant at UConn, was like a proud poppa in the stands, watching some of the top talent in the country eye his digs.
Probably the best player on display was former Providence-commit, 6-foot point guard Naadir Tharpe of Brewster Academy and the New England Playaz. Tharpe can see the court well and is a pure point. He is now still involved with Providence along with Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Indiana and UMass, among others. He was coached in the event by John Carroll, former head coach of the Celtics.
Tharpe played against J.B. Hoops of Pennsylvania led by rising junior 6-foot-5 forward Terry Turner, drawing looks from Penn State,Temple, La Salle, St. Joe’s and to a lesser extent Syracuse and Rutgers. 6-foot-7 Mark Bevacqua also impressed. He has a high ankle sprain but is being looked at by some Big East schools.
The New England Playaz 16s were led by 6-foot-9 Evan Cummins of Northfield Mt. Hermon who is drawing looks from Ivies such as Brown, Penn and Cornell.
The New York Panthers were stuck in traffic and didn’t show by press time. Many coaches were there to see 6-foot-7 Maurice Harkless of South Kent (via NYC), heavily recruited by Rutgers, who is on his new list, along with Memphis, St. John’s, Georgetown, Miami, South Florida, Xavier, Virginia, Maryland, Syracuse, Temple, Pitt, Providence and Cincinnati, according to adviser Nate Blue’s twitter this afternoon, since retracting his verbal commitment from Connecticut. Many coaches were also waiting on Kadeem Jack, who will join Harkless at South Kent next season, as Jack is Working Through Recruiting Process as a 2011 Prospect now.
Rising sophomore Kuran Iverson was a star for Connecticut Select 16s and was being looked at by Big East assistants from UConn (Andre LaFleur), Pittsburgh (Pat Skerry) and Cincinnati (former Rutgers assistant Darren Savino was there on behalf of the Bearcats).
Present for Rutgers was Van Macon, who previously coached under former Hofstra and now Fordham coach Tom Pecora, who was also present. The two remain friendly.
ESPN’s Andy Katz headed the media contingent and was looking all over the place for West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, who was due to arrive by evening. Word is Huggins made sure to make himself seen when elite 2012 prospect Andre Drummond took the floor for Connecticut Basketball Club later on.
Affable Harvard head coach, and former Seton Hall head coach, Tommy Amaker was there looking at some prep players. He did not rule out coaching in the Big East again.

AMILE JEFFERSON: OFFER FROM SYRACUSE “HUMBLING”
July 11, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
Top 2012 prospect in high demand as recruiting heats up already
Mining the talent of Friends Central in Philadelphia (PA) has been pretty successful for Syracuse in the past as one of NBE’s All-Tome Top 50 Big East Players came from the school and was a key member of Jim Boeheim’s national championship club of 2003. The school that brought SU Hakim Warrick is now home to one of the most coveted prospects in the class of 2012: Amile Jefferson.
While the Orange will hope lightning strikes twice, many other schools hope that Jefferson chooses their school in the end. The local Big East program (Villanova) has also made a strong impression with a scholarship offer and others are certainly in the mix as well.

Former Husky commit expands list, but UConn no longer in the running
by JEFF BORZELLO
As recently as one month ago, Maurice Harkless was fully committed to Connecticut.
“He’s sticking with UConn, and I can see him curling off screens in Storrs,” a source said at the time.
Then, on June 21, Harkless decided to decommit – but was still heavily considering the Huskies.
DURAND JOHNSON LOOKING FOR RESPECT & EXPOSURE

A Name You Should Know but Probably Don’t; Durand Johnson
By MATT WHITFIELD
The message received by NBE early afternoon on Tuesday was short, but very clear in its intention. After reading that NBE was on the campus of Albright College in Reading (PA) for the Hoop Group Elite camp, Durand Johnson sent the following message to NBE:
“I’m down here too. I play at 4. On court B1 my jersey number 683,” Johnson typed in his message.
My bosses at NBE immediately texted me and I did just that and sure enough this youngster was right on. We should be watching him and so should everybody else.
VAUGHN GRAY’S PLAY IMPRESSIVE, RECRUITING ON AN UPTICK

New interest, especially from West Virginia, catches Gray’s attention
by MATT WHITFIELD
Playing on an AAU where Myles Mack, Myles Davis, Kyle Anderson and Desmond Hubert get most of the attention and Derrick Randall and Jarrod Davis also are receiving plenty of high-major attention, it might be easy for Vaughn Gray to get lost in the shuffle.
Afterall, Gray is a ‘glue-guy’ for the powerful NJ Playaz, willing to do the little things that help teams like the Playaz win. That type of game might not bring all the accolades that some of his teamates receive, but college coaches are certainly taking notice as his recruiting has been taken up a notch and NBE has certainly noticed right out of the gates this spring on the AAU trail.

POTENTIAL ELITE 2013 RECRUIT GENO THORPE ON THE MOVE
July 8, 2010 by NBE Blogger · 1 Comment
Western PA athlete transferring to Shaler Area High School, concentrating on basketball
by MATT WHITFIELD
Elite 2013 dual-athlete Geno Thorpe has transferred from Shady Side Academy where he was a star freshman on both the football field and basketball courts and enrolled at Shaler Area High School in Glenshaw (PA). Despite the look of a future star on the gridiron in football-crazy Western Pennsylvania, Thorpe will not be playing football this upcoming season. Instead he will concentrate on basketball.
Thorpe, the son of a former local high school standout at Fox Chapel, Gene Thorpe, told NBE Tuesday night that he is done with football “for good,” and will focus solely on basketball now. Thorpe, who led Shady Side in receiving this past season and ran a 4.6 forty as a freshman, will leave his game on the hardwood where he looks to be a highly sought-after recruit in the coming years.
“Pitt, Louisville, Ohio State, Temple, Arizona and Rutgers,” Thorpe mentioned when asked which schools were recruiting him.
He also stated he had an offer from Rutgers. But, being on the border of Big East/Big Ten country, Thorpe, with a dad and an uncle that played basketball and football at Penn State, looks to have has his eyes set on playing for their arch rival.
“[I’m] probably a favorite of the Big Ten. Ohio State is where I’d want to end up, but I like the Big East too,” stated Thorpe.
Thorpe is planning to visit the Buckeyes at the end of the month. He recently had the opportunity to visit Rutgers and has a previous relationship with new head coach Mike Rice who was previously at Robert Morris.
“I liked it,” said Thorpe of the RU visit. “Mike Rice is a good guy. I think they’re headed in a good direction. I think Mike Rice is a good coach and I think he’ll get their program up with years to come.”
Thorpe who is rugged guard with great athleticism and speed for his age shows no signs of slowing down. Fittingly, the player he likes to compare his game to as well is also one who never really take a play off.
“Not to like to knock on his shoes, but it would probably be like John Wall,” said Thorpe. “As everytime I get the ball I look to get a fast break and get transition points.”
Thorpe is only entering his sophomore year of high school still feels he needs to work on his, ‘three point shooting,’ and ‘getting stronger.” However, for the humble adolescent, when it’s all said and done, Thorpe should join Danny Fortson as one of the greats to ever play for Shaler.

Cosby, a 6-foot-3 point guard originally from Kentucky, took a visit to the South Orange, N.J. campus this weekend and came away impressed.

MERNAGH: ARRIVAL DAY AT NBAPA TOP 100 CAMP
June 17, 2010 by NBE Blogger · 3 Comments
by RAY MERNAGH
Yesterday was the first time I’ve ever used a GPS system while traveling and it scared the living hell out of me. I drove trucks for a short time oh so long ago and I’ve always mapped out trips and had directions written down in the passenger seat (or my passenger’s hands). I just couldn’t get used to hearing a voice telling me what to do — I felt completely powerless.
This doesn’t seem right.
I don’t think I should get off 81 right now.
What if this thing turns a five and a half hour trip into a eight hour one and I miss the practice at 4.
All three italicized thoughts raced through my mind as I made the trip here to Charlottesville, Virginia. My brother Jim called me halfway through and when I mentioned that I was in the process of losing my GPS virginity and how I was feeling a bit unpure about it he just laughed — “It’ll get you there bro, don’t worry.”
And I’ll be damned if it didn’t.
Pulled into the John Paul Jones Arena lot on UVA’s campus at 3:57.
WHEW!
Looking down at the floor I noticed Jerry Stackhouse and Chris Duhon right away putting kids through their paces (think I saw potential future UConn assistant Kevin Ollie as well, working with guards/forwards on side pick and rolls). Former Pitt great Charles Smith showed up with (I assume) his son in tow. Anyway, I was able to catch up with a few interesting kids, plus a current NBA free agent, before setting out — completely confident in technology — to find my hotel.

COACHES CALLING DANIEL OCHEFU EARLY & OFTEN
June 15, 2010 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
PA big man from 2012 gets a new offer among the many calls from college coaches today
Daniel Ochefu is not a common name among college basketball fans and recruitniks. Afterall, the 2012 Westtown (PA) Friends big man has yet to step out on the AAU circuit this spring. This summer the Westtown program will hit the AAU trail together led by head coach Seth Berger. Astute basketball fans may recognize that name as Berger was the founder of the And1 company.
NBE predicted back in March that the interest in Ochefu would grow exponentially with more exposure, apparently that exposure is not necessary.
On the first day college coaches can call prospects of the class of 2012 on the phone, Ochefu must have felt he lives at Grand Central Station.
