HOOP HALL CLASSIC – DAY I

January 17, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

BY JEFF BORZELLO

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Year in and year out, the Hoop Hall Classic at Springfield College is the most loaded event of the high school season. This year, though, the organizers took it to a new level. According to ESPN Rise’s Top 50, seven of the top 14 teams will be in attendance, with several more rounding out the rankings. In terms of individuals, nine of Scout.com’s top 21 players in 2011 and seven of their top 21 guys in 2012 will participate. Simply put, the event is stacked.

While Friday featured a few games, Saturday is when the Classic really got rolling. There were four nationally-relevant games, starting with Mount Vernon (N.Y.) and Taft (Calif). St. Anthony (N.J.) and DeMatha (Md.) followed, along with Morgan Park (Ill.) and Garfield (Wash.), as well as Oak Hill (Va.) and Milton (Ga.).

Note: Top committed players that were featured on Saturday included Spencer Dinwiddie (six points and 11 assists, Colorado), Tony Wroten (23 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Washington), Jerome Brown (13 points, Illinois-Chicago), Quinn Cook (16 points and eight assists, Duke), Sidiki Johnson (0 points and two rebounds, Arizona), Dai-Jon Parker (19 points, four rebounds and four assists, Vanderbilt), Shannon Scott (22 points, four rebounds and three assists, Ohio State), Julian Royal (15 points and seven rebounds, Georgia Tech), Kyle Hornsby (13 points and six rebounds, UNC-Asheville), Jordan Loyd (10 points and nine rebounds, Furman) and Daniel Gomis (0 points and four rebounds, Oregon State).

Class of 2011:

Myles Mack, PG, St. Anthony: Mack was arguably the best player on Saturday at the Hoop Hall Classic. The Rutgers-signee got his shot going early and was the primary factor in St. Anthony’s 50-point win over DeMatha. He eliminated most questions about his ability to play the point guard position in the Big East, getting to the rim and creating for his teammates. Mack is absolutely fearless when going to the basket and has also improved his ball-handling and vision. He plays with a quiet confidence and is impossible to contain when he’s hot from deep.

Wayne Blackshear, SF, Morgan Park: Blackshear had the day’s scariest moment when the Louisville-signee went down clutching his knee after a breakaway dunk in which he landed awkwardly. However, he ended up being fine and finished with an impressive 26 points and eight rebounds. Blackshear is such a difficult match-up for opponents due to his skill set, as he can overpower a guard like Tony Wroten in the post, but also step out and knock down perimeter shots if a bigger player is on him.

NATIONAL PREP SHOWCASE – DAY TWO

November 21, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

BY JEFF BORZELLO

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a first day that got better as the event progressed, everyone was ready for a jam-packed second day that featured eight games. Plenty of coaches were in attendance, keeping an eye on some of the top players in the country. The day started off with a great game between Bridgton Academy (Maine) and Fork Union Military Academy (Va.), with Bridgton overcoming a 20-point halftime deficit to win in the final minutes. In the second game, Andre Drummond led a comeback by St. Thomas More (Conn.) to beat Princeton Day Academy (Md.). After that, Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) opened up a big second half lead on New Hampton (N.H.), with an easy Brewster Academy (N.H.) victory over Fishburne Military Academy (Va.) following. South Kent (Conn.) proceeded to blow out La Lumiere (Ind.), but Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) and Westwind Prep (Ariz.) had a dynamite back-and-forth contest that ended with Notre Dame winning. St. Mark’s (Mass.) handled Lee Academy (Maine) easily, before Kiski School (Penn.) staged a big second-half comeback to beat Winchendon (Mass.).

Here is a look at some of the top players, and recruiting notes, from day two:

Zach Auguste, 2012, New Hampton Prep: Auguste is a long and lanky lefty who is improving every game. He uses his length and athleticism to get blocks and rebounds at both ends of the floor and he also has fairly good vision and passing ability for a player his size. Auguste was in foul trouble for most of the game, but in limited minutes, he demonstrated his immense potential. He had a big-time baseline dunk and can finish with either hand. Once he learns how to stay on the floor for an entire game, he is going to be tough to stop.

Despite being limited because of foul trouble on Saturday, colleges were still intrigued by his potential. According to New Hampton Prep coach Pete Hutchins, Auguste has offers from DePaul, Notre Dame, Boston College and Oregon State, with interest from Kansas and Syracuse.

NATIONAL PREP SHOWCASE: DAY ONE

November 20, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

by JEFF BORZELLO

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – College basketball has its 24-hour marathon; high school has the National Prep Showcase. Featuring 23 of the best prep school teams in the country, the National Prep Showcase is the official start to the high school basketball season. The teams gather at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn. for three jam-packed days of games. There will be well over 100 Division-I recruits throughout the weekend, so it is a great spot for college coaches to get a look at recently-signed recruits or uncommitted prospects.

The day started out with an uneventful Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.) win over Fork Union Military Academy (Va.), 80-73. Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) held on in the second game to beat Fishburne Military Academy (Va.), 75-66. Westwind Prep (Ariz.) and Bridgton Academy (Maine) had a back-and-forth battle, with Westwind pulling it out, 84-78. The best game of the day was Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) and South Kent (Conn.), a high-scoring and entertaining affair that Hargrave won 115-105. After that was St. Thomas More’s easy win over Lee Academy, 82-57, followed by Princeton Day Academy (Md.) defeating Winchendon (Mass.), 67-63. The final game of the day kept everyone entertained, as NIA Prep (N.J.) knocked off Maine Central Institute in overtime after Shaq Thomas hit a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game.

Here is a look at some of the top players, and recruiting notes, from day one:

Evan Cummins, 2012, Northfield Mount Hermon: Cummins has consistently gotten better over the last few months, and it continued today. He runs the floor well and has good hands for a big man. He can finish at the rim and is also able to kncok down mid-range jump shots. Cummins struggled a bit to finish in some instances, but overall he demonstrated a versatile offensive game and justified the increased recruiting attention he is receiving (detailed below).

Aaron Cosby, 2011, Northfield Mount Hermon: The Seton Hall-signee is much more aggressive than he was a year ago. He looked for his shot more often today, driving past his defender into the lane for leaners and lay-ups. Cosby also knocked down outside shots consistently and was able to make shots over defenders. He had a few nice passes and led the fast break effectively. He does need to protect the ball better on his drives, though; he had the ball batted away or stripped while he was in the air several times. Cosby finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – If Tuesday was the day when the stars came out, with big-time performances from Mike Gilchrist, Anthony Davis, Austin Rivers, Marquis Teague and Brad Beal, Wednesday was the time to showcase some lesser-known talents from the class of 2012. There were only four sessions of U-17 games, with four sessions of U-16 contests. The playoffs also kicked off during the night session for each age group, with Team Takeover, BABC, St. Louis Eagles and Spiece – the group winners – advancing to play Metro Hawks, Team Final, Oakland Soldiers and Boo Williams, the runners-up in each group. In U-16, group winners Team Takeover, Georgia Stars, BABC and Memphis YOMCA squared off. With the night session featuring all playoff games, the semifinals in U-17 and finals in U-16 are set for tomorrow. FINAL KING CITY CLASSIC PLAYER EVALS & UPDATES

July 12, 2010 by · 1 Comment

BY JEFF BORZELLO

CLEVELAND – After a fairly lackluster experience at the LeBron James Skills Academy – aside from the hype of having James there, of course – the 75 or so players from that camp traveled about 40 minutes north to Cleveland State University for two days of tournament-style games. The players, broken into eight teams, competed in two games each before entering the playoffs. It was far easier to evaluate the prospects in the game-setting than it was in the drills and the controlled scrimmages.

While our attention is now squarely on the finals of the Nike Elite Yough Basketball League being played at the Peach Jam in North Augusta (SC), we take our final look back at last week’s King City Classic. Previously, in our King City Classic Update (Part A) we took a look at Big East commits such as Wayne Blackshear, Tyrone Johnson, Michael Carter-Williams and James Price and their performances when we were watching. In King Citty Classic Update (Part B) NBE updated notes on mega-prospect Anthony Davis as he discussed his three finalists, talked with LaQuinton Ross about offers and visits and spent time with Myles Davis as he discusses the new offer from ‘Nova and the impact of friend Tyrone Johnson committing to the Wildcats recently. Desmond Hubert, Myles Mack and Ben McLemore also chat about their recruiting. Earlier today in Part C of our King City Classic Recap we touched base with players such as Rodney Hood, Kedren Johnson, Bernard Silluvan, Cedric McAfee, Jahii Carson, LJ Rose, J-Mychal Reese, Trey McDonald and more.

In this last edition we take a look at Rodney Purvis, DaJuan Coleman, JaKarr Sampson, Nick Faust, Jabarie Hinds, Nick Johnson, jabari Brown, Anrio Adams, Kyle Wiltjer, Deng Leek and recruiting updates from Sam Thompson, Mike Shaw, Josiah Turner, Julian Royal, Alex Poythress, Victor Nickerson, Jelon Hornbeck and many, many more…

ADIDAS INVITATIONAL EVALUATIONS & RECRUITING UPDATES (PART A)

July 9, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

by RAY MERNAGH

The Adidas Invitational threatened to turn into the New Heights Invitational — that will happen when a team full of tough, NYC-area ballers takes out a juggernaut full of “high-major” prospects like New Heights did to Indiana Elite/Team Indiana in the quarterfinals early Thursday morning. New Heights then repeated the performance in the semifinals, where it fought back from a double digit deficit to defeat the New England Playaz. Alas, the run ended in the final when New Heights lost to the LeBryan Nash-led Dallas Mustangs 69-58. It was an impressive run by a New Heights squad not expected to challenge for the title this week and plenty of college coaches were here to witness it.

Earlier in our Adidas Invitational Day One Standouts article we went into (long) detail on the impressive performance of Shabazz Muhammad, who was the talk of the event Tuesday and plenty of top coaches were watching his EVERY move, as well as our thoughts and updates on Wannah Bail, Cody Zeller, Gabe York, recent UC-verbal Ge-Lawn Guyn and more that stood out on Tuesday.

Now here’s some evaluations and updates from the past two days (wed/Thurs) of action, including Winston Shepard, Lebryan Nash, Jermaine Sanders, Jeremiah Davis, Kenny Kaminsky and more…

VAUGHN GRAY’S PLAY IMPRESSIVE, RECRUITING ON AN UPTICK

July 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

New interest, especially from West Virginia, catches Gray’s attention

by MATT WHITFIELD

Playing on an AAU where Myles Mack, Myles Davis, Kyle Anderson and Desmond Hubert get most of the attention and Derrick Randall and Jarrod Davis also are receiving plenty of high-major attention, it might be easy for Vaughn Gray to get lost in the shuffle.

Afterall, Gray is a ‘glue-guy’ for the powerful NJ Playaz, willing to do the little things that help teams like the Playaz win. That type of game might not bring all the accolades that some of his teamates receive, but college coaches are certainly taking notice as his recruiting has been taken up a notch and NBE has certainly noticed right out of the gates this spring on the AAU trail.

REGIME CHANGES AT RU, SHU & SJU HOPE TO PUT NYC LOCALS BACK ON BIG EAST MAP

July 6, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

With the July ‘live’ period about to kick off, Richard Kent takes a look at some notes around the Big East

by RICHARD KENT

“The Locals”

It may be a little too early for a report card on Steve Lavin, Kevin Willard and Mike Rice but they are all making their marks in different ways.

One New York reporter has indicated that Lavin could be a homerun or a quick out. He has already gotten a top notch player to come from California. Many question his abilities on the bench, especially at crunch time. He had great talent at UCLA, but often times lost many scratch of the head games. He certainly has the charisma to coach in New York but many feel that St. John’s is a tough sell with the dorm situation and a possible problem renewing with Madison Square Garden.

Willard did a great job at Iona but he has been called a few years away from the big-time by a few. That may be more of a function of his age than his basketball coaching abilities. He looked awfully comfortable on then bench throughout his Iona tenure and always has his dad to call on if a tough situation arises while at Seton Hall. Of the three, he actually has Big East head coaching experience as he stepped in for one game for Rick Pitino while an assistant at Louisville.

Rice is taking over a Program which is lower than St. John’s or Seton Hall. Some in the media have characterized Rutgers as a football school. That is more of a compliment to football coach Greg Schiano than an indictment of basketball. Rutgers can use football as an advantage in two ways. One, when kids come on campus in the Fall they can go to a sold out Rutgers Stadium for a football game. St. John’s and Seton Hall do not have that advantage. Secondly, they can also get a sell from Schiano who is regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country. He has always felt that a strong basketball program will help his program.

Time will tell on all three coaches. St. John’s and Seton Hall have the chance to have winning records this coming season. Rutgers does not, even with a hopeful addition of a JUCO center in the near future they will still be thin in the frontcourt. Three years is probably a fair amount of time to judge the three coaches. We say that all three will be an improvement at their respective schools over the past regimes.
————————————————————————————————————–

Top 5 NCAA Coaches

1.Mike Krzyzewski, Duke – This year sealed the deal. His team was not that talented. No draft picks yet he won it all with thoughts about his upcoming Olympic stint in the back of his mind.

2.Roy Williams, North Carolina – A master on the bench. An even better recruiter.

3.Jim Calhoun, UConn – If his team had beaten George Mason a few years back he would be higher. He has done an amazing job at UConn. His players make better pros than either of the two coaches ahead of him.

4.Tom Izzo, Michigan State – Never has a bad team. Is a master of getting to the Sweet Sixteen.

5.Jim Boeheim, Syracuse – Just take a look at his wife. In all seriousness he lets his kids play and they like that system. His 2-3 zone defense is as good as any zone anywhere.
——————————————————————————————-

More Notes…

** Class of 2011 small forward Aaron Brown of Penn Wood HS in Langhorne (PA) just gave a verbal to West Virginia. Brown is the first commit for Bob Huggins and staff in the class of 2011. Brown averaged 18.7 points per gameas well as 6.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals in helping the Patriots reach the PIAA Class AAAA championship game for a second straight season. Brown also had visited Rutgers and strongly considered Temple before picking the Mountaineers.

** Hillhouse High in New Haven (CT) has had some explosive guards. Billy Evans, former BC star comes to mind. They probably have never had a player as explosive offensively as Fred Wilson, Jr. The 6-foot-1,180-pound combo guard was double-teamed by powerhouse Mount Vernon this year and still had 21 points in a 61-52 win. Wilson can shoot the three and also drive to the basket with equal abilities. He is playing the recruiting game close to the vest but one of his teammates confided that he is waiting on an offer from Connecticut, his top choice. He is also hearing from Rutgers, UMass, Providence, Boston College and Rhode Island among other national schools.

2012 TEAM TAKEVOER-CANADA DUO HEARING FROM COLLEGES

June 16, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Bennett, Webster-Chan readying for U17 World Championships with Team Canada

The migration south of talented basketball players from Canada into the United States is continuing, and actually picking up speed. The class of 2011 is highlighted by Texas commitments Tristan Thompson and Myck Kabongo while Cory Joseph was one of the most highly recruited players in the class of 2010. Now a couple more prospects in the class of 2012 have been getting a lot of attention from college coaches and will be highly sought after players in the near future.

Anthony Bennett, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward and Negus Webster-Chan, a 6-foot-7, 175-pound guard, both have had their phone ring often the last two days with college coaches on the other end.

RUMBLE IN THE BRONX: THE FINAL RUNDOWN

June 15, 2010 by · 1 Comment

BY JEFF BORZELLO

BRONX, N.Y. – As the weekend wound down at Fordham University in the 2010 Rumble in the Bronx, several surprises occurred across the bracket in the playoffs. The top AAU team in the country, the NJ Playaz, suffered an upset at the hands of New Heights in the quarterfinals, while East Coast Elite, a team from Delaware, was rolling through the bracket. The New England Playaz and New York Gauchos also dropped surprising match-ups in the quarterfinals. In the U-16 division, no New York teams ended up reaching the championship game, as a loaded BABC team would take on the PA Playaz and its one-man show of Ryan Arcidiacono in the finals. Despite most of the top talent not appearing in the semifinals and finals, the Rumble in the Bronx did not lack for excitement.

Domonique Bull, 2012, BABC: Bull, one of the top New England guard prospects in the class of 2012, is built like his last name would indicate. He is very strong with the ball and has improved his athleticism and quickness since last summer. Bull can get into the lane with the bounce and distribute it to open teammates for easy baskets. He rarely plays out of control, and remains calm under pressure. He did not turn the ball over much, and was highly effective.

Bull, who passed up the NIKE Hoop Jamboree to attend the Rumble in the Bronx, is receiving interest from Western Kentucky, Miami (Fl.), Providence, Florida and more. He likes Miami (Fl.) a lot, and will attend the Elite Camps of both Florida and Wisconsin.

RUMBLE IN THE BRONX: FRIDAY RUNDOWN

June 12, 2010 by · 3 Comments

BY JEFF BORZELLO

BRONX, N.Y. — With the proliferation of AAU events in the past couple of years, some of the bigger tournaments have fallen into obscurity. However, one that has stood the test of time is the Rumble in the Bronx, held at Fordham University. Although it always has a heavy New York metro-area flavor, it also brings in some of the top AAU programs from around the country. This year was no different, as the Southern Kings (GA), Dallas Mustangs (TX), Franchise All-Stars (TX) and others flew into New York for the tournament. Despite Adidas Nations taking place in Oregon and the NIKE Hoop Jamboree in St. Louis, there is still plenty of talent on-hand in the Bronx this weekend. Here’s a look at some of the top players:

Andre Drummond, 2012, Connecticut Basketball Club: Although Drummond didn’t show up until halftime of his team’s first game, he made an impact in the few minutes he played. He can finish with contact and runs the floor extremely well. On one play, he got a rebound over three players and then took two players off the dribble before driving to the basket. Drummond is also an adept shot-blocker and defender. Additionally, he showed good vision and passed the ball effectively. However, he did struggle with his footwork and back-to-the-basket game at times, resulting in difficult and awkward shots. Drummond also spends too much time on the perimeter as opposed to utilizing his size (6’10, 250) and skill down low.

BIG EAST NEWS & NOTES (5/14/2010)

May 14, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

*********Follow NBE Sports on Twitter: http://twitter.com/NBESports*****

Today’s News & Notes are full of updates from around the conference and college basketball. The Big East teams in New Jersey are moving forward from their previous regimes with news on staff additions and players withdrawing from the NBA Draft, making one program very optimistic about their immediate future, while the other is looking more at the path for long-term success. Also, more on Herb Pope as his medical status takes first priority in his life. The same can be said somewhat for Austin Freeman as he is learning to cope with type-1 diabetes.

On the recruiting front, a former Louisville commitment is opening up the process and taking his time, looking at some of the top schools in the nation. A pair of 2010 prospects are open and looking to find fits for the fall, they would be excellent late-spring additions to Big East schools or other high-major programs. Providence is learning from mistakes in order to prevent another black-eye in the future and a couple of roster issues are closer to being resolved. USF is thin in backcourt experience while a couple of their current players are in a little hot water. A couple of 2011 forward prospects in the midwest are also in demand this spring to Big East schools and others.
