July 14, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By Alex Jesswein

While many across the country have turned their attention to the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Championship at the Peach Jam in North Augusta (SC), Antonio Curro and his crew at NY2LASports.com have assembled another strong field for the 2011 UA Summer Jam. Some of the biggest names in the 2012 Class are in Wisconsin for the event, including Shabazz Muhammad, Isaiah Austin, Mitch McGary, Perry Ellis and more. Top AAU programs like Dream Vision, Texas Pro, SYF Players, DC Assault, Playground Elite, Team Loaded, and more are competing in the event.

NBE will have much more on the event as it moves to completion on the 15th. For now here are some recruiting notes that NBE has been able to compile in the first two days of action:

Duane Wilson, Class of 2013 point guard with the Playground Elite AAU program, listed Marquette (offer), Minnesota, Memphis, Washington, Virginia, Missouri, DePaul, Wisconsin, Illinois, Miami (FL), Florida State, and Florida. He has visited Kentucky, DePaul and Missouri unofficially recently.

As he heads into his next season, Wilson said he wants to work on getting stronger, playing better defense and hitting shots off of the dribble.

By Brian Bosworth

The top high school talent in the nation invaded North Augusta, South Carolina on Tuesday morning as the 2011 Nike Peach Jam got underway. As the culmination of Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL), the tournament features the top 24 Nike sponsored AAU teams in the country. I knew I was in for a special day when I walked into the gym around 8:15 in the morning for a 9:00 tip-off and NBA superstar Chris Paul was on the court getting a personal workout in. His club, the CP3 All-Stars, was tipping off at 9 and he was on hand to support them. Action was fast and furious throughout the morning with high-major talent standing out all over the court.

Here are the results from the first set of games:

REEBOK BREAKOUT CHALLENGE: THURSDAY RECRUITING ROUNDUP

July 8, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By Matt Whitfield

The return to the summer basketball camp scene by Reebok has been well received. The competition and talent level is certainly solid at the Gallagher Athletic Center on the campus of Philadelphia University. NBE took in the action for the most part of the day Thursday and was able to touch base with many of the players to learn the latest on their recruitments. While the camp had a strong group of Mid-Major+ prospects, there was more than a fair share of players who will land at higher levels in college. Below is a rundown of who we caught up with yesterday.

Rysheed Jordan (Robert Vaux HS/Players Teaching Players)

There was a lot of hype centering Jordan entering the camp and many scouts, reporters and college coaches were anxious to get a look at him. He did not disappoint as the 6-foot-3, Class of 2013 point guard has all the look of a sure fire high major recruit. He has definitely noticed the increased attention of late.

“I think I’m blowing up,” said Jordan of the recent influx of recruiting attention. “I’m easing my way up.”

UNC VISIST MAKES BIG IMPRESSION ON ’13 R.J. CURINGTON

June 23, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Despite only entering his junior season next fall, R.J. Curington has been a player many have kept an eye on for a couple years around the country. After terrorizing local players around Dyer (IN) in junior high school Curington made the move to Oak Hill Academy as an 8th grader, spending two years on the ‘Red’ squad at the elite basketball powerhouse. This past season Curington moved up to the ‘Gold’ squad as a sophomore and he has had a huge spring on the AAU circuit with CIA Bounce and is beginning to fulfill the potential many saw in him early on.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing in at 195 pounds Curington combines excellent size for a young wing with tremendous athletic ability. He has become a lethal scorer this spring and early summer as his skill development has been right on schedule and his confidence in his improved perimeter scoring skills is evident. Those traits have quickly raised his recruiting profile into one of the top targets for many schools in the Class of 2013.

RECRUITING NOTEBOOK: ELITE PROGRAMS REACHING OUT TO 2013 PROSPECTS

June 21, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The live July evaluation period is right around the corner. Once again NBE will be out in full force during both 10-day recruiting periods, stretching from East to West and North and South to keep up with all the recruiting information. It is always a fun process to see what college coaches are out on the recruiting trail and who they are watching.

In the meantime, the phones of top prospects in the Class fo 2013 have been ringing off the hook as colleges are permitted to contact a recruit once a month on the phone or via email. June 15th was the first day contact was allowed and programs wasted little time reaching out to prospects.

Santa Clara called me at 12:00 on the dot,” said Tyler Ennis. “Oregon State, Santa Clara and Iowa State all did.”

Ennis is a 6-foot-3, 178-pound guard who plays on the AAU spring and summer circuit with CIA Bounce out of Canada. He attended St. Benedict’s in Newark (NJ) last season and has had a busy early summer season with trips to LA for the Pangos Camp and to the University of Virginia campus for the recent NBA Top 100 Camp. His play has drawn very good reviews and it shows in the latest list of schools that have been in contact since the 15th.

RUMBLE IN THE BRONX REPORT – PART II

June 12, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By Brian Bosworth

In the stands at Manhattan College on Saturday, spectators were consistently grumbling about who wasn’t in attendance for this years’ Rumble in the Bronx. Multiple high profile players chose not to make the trip to New York with their respective teams headlined by Andre Drummond and Kris Dunn of CBC, Omar Calhoun and Jason Boswell of the New York Gauchos, Kuran Iverson and Nkereuwem Okoro of the Long Island Lightning, Noah Vonleh of Mass Rivals, and Clyde Smith of New Heights. Despite missing all these future college stars, the tournament rolled on with plenty of guys stepping up in their absence. The top performances from Saturday at Manhattan College are documented below.

Ricardo Ledo (Expressions Elite 2012) – Ledo struggled mightily offensively throughout the majority of his teams’ early morning contest with the Riverside Hawks but showed down the stretch why he’s considered one of the nation’s best players. With his team trailing by 7 late in the second half, Ledo buried three consecutive NBA range 3 pointers each one deeper than the last to spark a 15-0 run and lead his team to victory. He is truly an elite scorer and only struggled today because he settled for the long ball too often. When Ledo is aggressive attacking the basket and takes 3 pointers in rhythm, he is completely unstoppable offensively.

NIKE EYBL – LOS ANGELES: SUNDAY RUNDOWN

May 30, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By Raphielle Johnson

On a day that featured a great matchup between the Oakland Soldiers and Albany City Rocks (won 72-68 by the Soldiers), it was the final game of the night that took the honors for Sunday’s best. Boo Williams and CIA Bounce (Canada) put on a show, needing double overtime to decide things in a two-point win for Bounce. The major performers were all over the floor, with Virginia commit Justin Anderson (2012) lighting it up for Boo Williams and 2013 prospect Xavier Rathan-Myers doing the honors in the latter stages of regulation and both overtime periods for Bounce.

Anderson displayed a wide range of skills in the contest, one he had to leave late due to major cramping issues (Anderson did return for a final possession but the ball did not end up in his hands). Early on Anderson made his way to the basket while also setting up teammates, finishing inside with contact as it became quite apparent that Bounce would have their hands full with him. But in the second half the fun really started, as each three-pointer Anderson put up seemed to be further back than the last one. Guessing that one of the shots came from 30 feet out would not be an exaggeration, and his form didn’t change. Virginia is getting a serious player come 2012.

As for Rathan-Myers, whose next high school seems to be up in the air, wow. He didn’t play a whole lot in the first half, but once on the floor in crunch time the young man got it done. Rathan-Myers displayed a good perimeter shot while also getting to the basket when needed. He’s already got good strength but one would have to think that he’ll get a bit more chiseled before 2013 rolls around.

But while those two stood out there were a number of other solid performers for each team. 2013 point guard Anthony Barber had some issues early in the second half with regards to decision-making, but with Anderson sidelined due to cramps Barber stepped up. Normally a pass-first point, the Hampton, VA native was able to penetrate to the basket and make shots while also knocking down a few perimeter shots. The outside shot will need to improve but Barber is a name to keep in mind.

NIKE EYBL – LOS ANGELES: SATURDAY RUNDOWN

May 29, 2011 by · 1 Comment

By Raphielle Johnson

The third round of the Nike EYBL tipped off on Saturday, and there’s an awful lot on the line for many of the 40 teams taking part. The top 24 following the three rounds move on to the Nike Peach Jam in early July, making the games at Hangar Athletic Xchange that much more important.

The big matchups of the day wouldn’t come until the evening session of Saturday’s action, with a battle between BABC and Mac Irvin Fire kicking things off. The game provided an opportunity to watch 2013 big man Nerlens Noel and 2014 prospect Jahlil Okafor go head to head, and while there’s only a year’s difference between the two it was rather apparent which one was more prepared for the moment.

Noel, a rangy big man who at this stage in his development is better as a defender, got the better of this matchup in BABC’s 66-54 win. Noel finished with 13 points while also blocking a number of shots and sparking a late first-half run with a thunderous dunk over Okafor. BABC led by seven at the half, and thanks to solid performances from Iowa State commit Georges Niang (20 points) and 2012 guard Domonique Bull (12 points) were able to withstand Mac Irvin’s second half charge.

NATIONAL RUNNER-UP BUTLER IN STRONG WITH SAM CASSELL JR.

May 10, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Baltimore native and son of former NBA All-Star is rising up the recruiting lists of available ’12 guards this spring

Sam Cassell Jr. is used to having the spotlight shining on him when he hits the basketball court. Being the son of a long-time NBA guard brings a lot of opportunity and a lot of scrutiny. Cassell told NBE’s Matt Whitfield last weekend at the Nike Baltimore Elite Invitational that he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s wonderful,” said Cassell. “I’ve seen a lot of things. I’ve had a lot of experiences. When I step in the gym people are always going to watch me because of my name, so that gives me an opportunity to show my talents.”

Sam Cassell Jr. '12

The Baltimore native is currently attending Notre Dame Prep in Massachusetts and is seeing his recruitment pick-up as a member of the Class of 2012. As he shows his talents more and more he told NBE that he now has offers from Butler, Florida State, South Florida, Clemson and UNLV. At this time he is trying to take in the process and see how things will play out.

“I’m just trying to figure out the best place for me and where I know I’m going to play as a freshman,” he said last weekend.

One school that might be moving up on his list is Butler. Brad Stevens has led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national title appearances and their success has left a strong impression on the younger Cassell. He is planning to use one of his official visits to see the Indianapolis (IN) campus up close and personal in the future.

“It’s good. I think I fit in perfect [at Butler],” said Cassell.

Sam Cassell Sr. is a former NBA 1st-round pick out of Florida State who won three NBA World Champions as a member of the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics. The elder Cassell was also honored in 2008 as one of the 20 greatest players in Milwaukee Bucks history for his success with the team. He had his best season in Milwaukee during the 2003-2004 campaign where he averaged 19.8 points a game and over 7 assists. The apple does not fall far from the tree as the younger Cassell has shown the ability to score and distribute as well on the floor, making him a very intriguing lead guard in the 2012 class.

NBE will be certain to follow Sam Cassell Jr. on the AAU trail this spring and summer with the Baltimore Elite program and keep readers updated on the latest news as it pertains to his recruitment. So stay tuned….

JERAMI GRANT IMPRESSES AT JAM FEST; MORE NEWS & NOTES

April 20, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By Ray Mernagh

It was an impressive weekend for Jerami Grant. The 6-foot-7, 180-lb forward out of DeMatha (DC) was the best player throughout the weekend on the best team at the Hoop Group’s Pittsburgh Jam Fest. The long, bouncy and skinny-strong athlete took over games for minutes at a time and closed them when he needed to. An inside-out threat, Grant reminds me of a cross between Darius Miles and (potentially) Kevin Durant right now. His game is growing by leaps and bounds, especially off the bounce and in the mid-post area. Grant exploded off two feet time and time again to attack the rim, but has the versatility to also show off a finesse skill set.

Grant played well on both ends of the floor, rebounding and defending the perimeter well. He got to the foul line often for and-one’s. In the end…he led Team Takeover DC to the Jam Fest’s overall title.

Grant, a straight baller in the Class of 2012 showing the signs of a potential pro, told NBE’s Lauren Kirschmann that he holds offers from Georgetown, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Miami, Rutgers and Clemson. He also tells Lauren that he is working on his ball handling and the consistency of his jumper. With no favorites, expect the recruitment of the latest Grant to blow up in the coming months VERY quickly.

BIG SHOTS DCA – BIG EAST PROSPECTS SHINE ON AAU SCENE

April 15, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By Ron Bailey

April 14, 2011 – This past weekend Big Shots teamed with DC Assault to put on a grassroots tourney in District Heights, Maryland. An estimated 100-plus teams spanning the 10-under through 17-under age groupings strapped on their shoes, taking the hardwood in battle. There were a number that played who are getting BIG EAST looks as future high-major recruits. Some of these players already have a reputation readers are aware off while others will be players to keep an eye on as they work to build up their names in the coming months on the AAU circuit.

First off, the well known….

Nate Britt shined at Big Shots - DCA last weekend. Class of 2013 guard has plenty of high-major attention from colleges

One such guy, Nate Britt, is already highly recruited by conference schools, with Villanova, Georgetown and Seton Hall having all offered the 6-foot-2 sophomore (Class of 2013) who shoots with his left but can dribble with both hands. West Virginia and Rutgers join others that are interested, including Virginia, Duke, and Texas. Arizona and UCLA have also offered Nate, a guard that can drive, shoot and pass, along with think the game.

What does he think about the BIG EAST? “It’s the best conference in America right now” was Britt’s response. Nate was one of the best players in this tourney, making i95Ballerz.com’s first team all star unit.

His DC Assault teammate, 6-foot-4 Torian Graham was tagged second team, and is also in high demand from conference schools, identifying Georgetown as having offered, and West Virginia being interested. UCLA, Clemson, Boston College and Miami have also invited him to attend, while Florida, Kentucky, Florida State and Kansas and others may do so soon.

Graham is a high flyer, one that can also drain jumpers from long distance, and defend in open court/press situations. An up and down style would seemingly fit him just fine.

EYBL – BOO WILLIAMS: PREP SCHOOL PROSPECTS SHINE ON AAU TRAIL

April 14, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

BY PAT STEVENS

HAMPTON, Va. – The first major national event of the travel hoops season took place this past weekend with the first session of Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League getting underway in it’s annual spot of long-time coach Boo Williams’ backyard.

Several prep school players were in action with their 17-under division teams, as BABC went 5-0 with Tilton (N.H.) teammates Georges Niang, Nerlens Noel, Goodluck Okonoboh and Wayne Selden (who mostly played 15U where they reached the championship game).

The Playaz also went undefeated with its backcourt shared by Myles Davis (Notre Dame Prep) and Darrick Wood (NIA Prep).

Albany City Rocks featured New Hampton (N.H.) teammates Zach Auguste and Olivier Hanlan along with Ricardo Ledo (Notre Dame Prep, MA), who averaged just under 24 points per game for the weekend.

Other prep school players included Mike Tobey (Hotchkiss/NY Gauchos/Virginia commit) and Sam Cassell Jr. (Notre Dame Prep/Baltimore Elite).

MAJOR CANADY – 6’3 2013 PG – HIGH ON WAKE FOREST; PLANNING MORE VISITS

April 2, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Major Canady was raised in ACC Country.

The 6-foot-3, 195 pound point guard prospect has long dreamed of suiting up and playing in the league he grew up watching in North Carolina. “I would really like to play in the ACC,” says Canady, “growing up in Carolina that’s all I saw.” Canady, if the interest he’s receiving — along with his athleticism and body — is any indication, will probably get that chance when the time comes for him to make a college decision.

This summer’s Grassroots circuit will go a long way towards Canady reaching that goal, with coaches from the ACC — not to mention the Big East, Big Ten and A-10 — all ready to be courtside to see if Canady can handle his business on the court at a projected high major level.

Wake Forest‘s staff is said to love him and most of the assistants on the Demon Deacon bench have already seen him play. Canady says that come July, head coach Jeff Bzdelik also plans to watch him play for the BSA U-16 squad (Canady will play with the 17′s at Bob Gibbons). In fact, Canady recently spent some quality time on the scenic campus of Wake Forest with his father and sister. And all of the Canady clan came away from the trip extremely impressed.

NEWARK (NJ) GUARD TARIQ CAREY POISED FOR BREAKOUT AAU SEASON

March 20, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

by MATT WHITFIELD

Still under the radar, but things could all change this summer for Tariq Carey, a junior (Class of 2012) guard from Newark Eastside.

“Tariq has a few things going on now that High School season is over,” said his Newark Eastside High School Coach Troy Long. “He’s playing with the NY Panthers and Gary Charles that should prepare him for college because he will be coached by Rafer Alston.”

While playing for a Newark Eastside team that went 18-9 this season, which included tough games against Findlay Prep and Seton Hall Prep, among others, Carey picked up some new interest on the recruiting front.

“This season he has picked up interest from UVA (Virginia), Richmond and Rhode Island. That goes along with Notre Dame, Creighton, Clemson and Duquesne. His recruitment should start to pick up once AAU season rolls around because now he will be on a high profile team and he will finally get seen like he should.”

RECRUITMENT OF KAREEM CANTY CATCHING UP TO HIS TALENT

February 11, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Last spring on the AAU circuit it became pretty clear that the recruitment of Kareem Canty would soon be taking off. The NYC native had a string of impressive showings with the LI Lightning program during the AAU travel season before the live July period began. Yet, his recruitment was still most heavily involved with mid-majors from the Northeast as he was in the Class of 2011.

Fast-Forward seven or eight months, Canty has moved to Bridgton Academy in the NEPSAC from Bishop Loughlin of NYC and after reclassing into the Class of 2012, his recruitment has definitely caught up to the talent he has displayed not only on the AAU scene, but also since transferring to Bridgton, which included a 28-point performance against a strong Northfield Mount Hermon squad in the National Prep School Invitational last weekend on the campus of Rhode Island University.

You can log-in or sign up for NBE Premium access by SUBSCRIBING (HERE) for as low as $2.08 a month with our annual membership to read more about Kareem Canty and his recruitment as the 2012 point guard has seen an uptick in interest and a longer list of schools is beginning to form. HOOP HALL CLASSIC – DAY I

January 17, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

BY JEFF BORZELLO

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Year in and year out, the Hoop Hall Classic at Springfield College is the most loaded event of the high school season. This year, though, the organizers took it to a new level. According to ESPN Rise’s Top 50, seven of the top 14 teams will be in attendance, with several more rounding out the rankings. In terms of individuals, nine of Scout.com’s top 21 players in 2011 and seven of their top 21 guys in 2012 will participate. Simply put, the event is stacked.

While Friday featured a few games, Saturday is when the Classic really got rolling. There were four nationally-relevant games, starting with Mount Vernon (N.Y.) and Taft (Calif). St. Anthony (N.J.) and DeMatha (Md.) followed, along with Morgan Park (Ill.) and Garfield (Wash.), as well as Oak Hill (Va.) and Milton (Ga.).

Note: Top committed players that were featured on Saturday included Spencer Dinwiddie (six points and 11 assists, Colorado), Tony Wroten (23 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Washington), Jerome Brown (13 points, Illinois-Chicago), Quinn Cook (16 points and eight assists, Duke), Sidiki Johnson (0 points and two rebounds, Arizona), Dai-Jon Parker (19 points, four rebounds and four assists, Vanderbilt), Shannon Scott (22 points, four rebounds and three assists, Ohio State), Julian Royal (15 points and seven rebounds, Georgia Tech), Kyle Hornsby (13 points and six rebounds, UNC-Asheville), Jordan Loyd (10 points and nine rebounds, Furman) and Daniel Gomis (0 points and four rebounds, Oregon State).

Class of 2011:

Myles Mack, PG, St. Anthony: Mack was arguably the best player on Saturday at the Hoop Hall Classic. The Rutgers-signee got his shot going early and was the primary factor in St. Anthony’s 50-point win over DeMatha. He eliminated most questions about his ability to play the point guard position in the Big East, getting to the rim and creating for his teammates. Mack is absolutely fearless when going to the basket and has also improved his ball-handling and vision. He plays with a quiet confidence and is impossible to contain when he’s hot from deep.

Wayne Blackshear, SF, Morgan Park: Blackshear had the day’s scariest moment when the Louisville-signee went down clutching his knee after a breakaway dunk in which he landed awkwardly. However, he ended up being fine and finished with an impressive 26 points and eight rebounds. Blackshear is such a difficult match-up for opponents due to his skill set, as he can overpower a guard like Tony Wroten in the post, but also step out and knock down perimeter shots if a bigger player is on him.

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL HOOPS FESTIVAL RECAP

December 13, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

BY JEFF BORZELLO

HYATTSVILLE, Md. – An underrated event on the high school circuit is the National High School Hoops Festival, an annual one-day event in the Washington, D.C. area. This year, it moved from Wise High School to DeMatha Catholic High School, a gorgeous school with impressive facilities. Some of the marquee teams on the docket were Word of God (N.C.), I.C. Norcom (Va.), Benedictine (Va.), Paul VI (Va.), St. Vincent St. Mary’s (Ohio) and, of course, DeMatha (Md.). There was plenty of talent on hand, leading a jam-packed day of basketball, here are some of the highlights and latest recruiting notes…

Class of 2011

Javon Moore, National Christian: Moore could be a sleeper prospect for a mid-level program in the spring. He was on fire on Saturday, knocking down seven 3-pointers and scoring at the rim, finishing with 34 points. Moore showed an ability to finish with contact in the lane and also hit jump shots with hands in his face. He doesn’t have an explosive first step, but is crafty and finds ways to score. Moore also had a few nice passes along the way.

TARIQ CAREY UPDATE: NO FAVORITE FOR INTRIGUING 2012 NJ GUARD

December 10, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

by MATT WHITFIELD

Perhaps over-looked by many in the recruiting circles because he doesn’t play at one of the perennial high-profile New Jersey prep programs like St. Anthony’s of Jersey City, St. Patrick of Elizabeth or St. Benedict’s in Newark, Tariq Carey is still one of the most talented players in the state and college coaches are certainly aware of him.

The Class of 2012 guard is looking forward to proving himself as one of the best in the state as Newark Eastside has a challenging schedule ahead of them this year. A date with Findlay Prep at the Primetime Shootout highlights that schedule and is just one of the marquee games they will be involved in.

“West Catholic, Seton Hall Prep twice and Neptune,” Carey mentioned on what other top games Newark Eastside has scheduled. “NJhoops has us ranked in the top five in the state and we have to live up to expectations and continue everydayto work hard and it will transition into the games,” said Carey.

You can log-in or sign up for NBE Premium access by SUBSCRIBING (HERE) for as low as $2.08 a month with our annual membership to read more on the developing talent of Jermaine Lawrence as he is already getting scholarship offers from programs in the ACC and BIG EAST.
