KING CITY CLASSIC EVALS & UPDATES (PART B)

July 11, 2010 by · 2 Comments

by JEFF BORZELLO

CLEVELAND – After a fairly lackluster experience at the LeBron James Skills Academy – aside from the hype of having James there, of course – the 75 or so players from that camp traveled about 40 minutes north to Cleveland State University for two days of tournament-style games. The players, broken into eight teams, competed in two games each before entering the playoffs. It was far easier to evaluate the prospects in the game-setting than it was in the drills and the controlled scrimmages.

In our King City Classic Update (Part A) we took a look at Big East commits such as Wayne Blackshear, Tyrone Johnson, Michael Carter-Williams and James Price and their performances when we were watching. In update B below we talk with mega-prospect Anthony Davis as he discusses his three finalists, talk with LaQuinton Ross as he talks about offers and visits and spend time with Myles Davis as he discusses the new offer from ‘Nova and the impact of friend Tyrone Johnson committing to the Wildcats recently. Desmond Hubert, Myles Mack and Ben McLemore also chat about their recruiting…

Former Husky commit expands list, but UConn no longer in the running

by JEFF BORZELLO

As recently as one month ago, Maurice Harkless was fully committed to Connecticut.

“He’s sticking with UConn, and I can see him curling off screens in Storrs,” a source said at the time.

Then, on June 21, Harkless decided to decommit – but was still heavily considering the Huskies.

JARROD DAVIS READY TO PULL TRIGGER FOR SETON HALL (UPDATED PART DEAUX)

July 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Davis tells NBE he is thankful process is over, although official commitment not made yet

BY JEFF BORZELLO

Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard looks to have nailed down his second 2011 verbal commitment in as many weeks on Wednesday, as Lakewood (N.J.) rising senior Jarrod Davis told NBE he committed to the Pirates on Wednesday night, at least according to him, but plans to make it official next week.

“At 10:30 exactly, I made the call and spoke to [assistant] coach [Dan] McHale,” Davis said this morning. “Him and Coach Willard were both recruiting [me].”

A source close to the situation and the SHU program indicated to NBE that the Pirate staff wanted to further evaluate Davis during this first 10-day live evaluation period in July with plans to watch him next at the Peach Jam in North Augusta (SC). The NJ Playaz will compete for the championship of the inagural Nike Elite Youth Basketball League at this year’s Peach Jam.

“I’m going to make [my commitment to Seton Hall] official after, or at the Peach Jam,” Davis said on Thursday afternoon. “But I’m still fully committed.”

Davis recently visited the Seton Hall campus and got a better feel for the program, coaches and situation there. Even with the NCAA ‘live’ recruiting period getting underway, Davis felt he had found his home.

“It just felt the most comfortable and I have a great relationship with the coaching staff,” Davis said Wednesday night. “I loved it on my visit. It felt like home and it’s close to home so my family and friends can come watch me.”

Davis had originally trimmed his list to Seton Hall, Tennessee and Georgia Tech last month, but then completely reopened his recruitment heading into the live period.

“There were no finalists,” he said. “After thinking it over, and after my visit, I was just sold and knew that’s where I wanted to be.”

With Davis currently in Reading (PA) participating in the Hoop Group Elite Camp and the SHU staff on the road at various events across the country, the commitment has caught a few people by surprise and caused plenty of confusion as several local newspapers also ran the story after contacting Davis. The question was raised from one source close to the SHU program early this morning if the commitment was finalized by both parties and another source with knowledge of his recruitment told NBE later in the morning that “he did not commit.” Davis’ AAU coach, Jimmy Salmons of the NJ Playaz, also was unable to confirm or deny a commitment has been finalized.

“I’m hearing the same things you are: that he committed,” Salmons told NBE on Thursday morning. “They’re really interested in him, but his name never came up when I’ve talked to them. Now, I’m not here to dispel anything, but I’d like to confirm it too.”

In Davis’ mind, official commitment or not, the process is over and it is a relief to him.

“I’m just happy the process is over and I found where I’m going,” he said Wednesday night. “I wanna thank all the great programs that recruited me and my family, and friends for being behind me. Most important, I want to thank my high school coach, Randy Holmes; he has been there for me through this whole process and, through the tough times, he has stayed by my side. And the whole PBC family, my teammates, athletic director and the people of Lakewood, my family for being there for me, and my dad — he travels with me and raised me well — and I’m thankful for all.”

The 6-foot-6 forward is excited to play right away and be an immediate contributor for Seton Hall if the commitment holds up.

“I think I can be good and make a big impact quick,” Davis said. “I know I still have a lot to work on and will get better over time.”

When Davis makes his commitment official, he will join Northfield Mount Hermon guard Aaron Cosby in the SHU class of 2011. Cosby, a native of Kentucky who is prepping in Massachusetts, committed near the end of June after a visit to Seton Hall.

LEBRON JAMES SKILLS ACADEMY RECRUITING NOTES: PART I

July 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

by JEFF BORZELLO

AKRON, Ohio – While most of the top college coaches and AAU teams were in Indianapolis to start the July live period, 75 of the best high school players in the classes of 2011 and 2012 – and one from the class of 2013 – convened at the University of Akron for the LeBron James Skills Academy. It was the culmination of four separate skills academies over the past weeks: those of Deron Williams, Paul Pierce, Kevin Durant and Amar’e Stoudemire. It was a true camp setting, with dozens of drills, but there was one noticeable difference: the King himself, LeBron James, showed up to play pick-up with the players. That was arguably the highlight of the event, as there was not too much to glean from the campers based on various passing and dribbling drills. However, there was plenty of recruiting notes and updates to pass along as NBE caught up with players such as Jabarie Hinds, Ricardo Ledo, Ricardo Gathers, JaKarr Sampson, Branden Dawson, Trevor Lacey, Nick Faust and many more for the absolute latest in their recruiting situations in detail as they talk leaders, visits, offers and more.

UConn PG and Pitt C are working on their games at the Lebron James Skills Academy this week

by JEFF BORZELLO

AKRON, Ohio – Rewind back to the beginning of the decade.

In 2001, the Pittsburgh basketball team had not made the NCAA Tournament since 1993 and was looking like a middling Big East program. On the other hand, Connecticut was only a couple of seasons removed from a national championship and seemed like the flag-bearer for the Big East.

Flash forward to 2010.

The expectations of the programs have switched. Pitt has made nine consecutive NCAA Tournaments, winning at least one game in eight of them. On the other hand, UConn has advanced past the first round of the Big Dance once in the past four seasons, failing to reach the NCAA Tournament twice.

Now, Pittsburgh is looking to continue its winning ways as one of the Big East favorites, while Connecticut needs to bounce-back from a disappointing NIT campaign.

GE-LAWN GUYN PULLS TRIGGER FOR CINCINNATI

July 1, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Mick Cronin and the Bearcats pick up second 2011 verbal commitment in Guyn

BY JEFF BORZELLO

Ge-Lawn Guyn had an impressive spring, but he’s not waiting for the summer to make his college decision.

The 6-foot-2 guard committed to Cincinnati on Thursday, choosing the Bearcats over Baylor, Providence, Rutgers and Western Kentucky.

“The biggest thing was his family could see him play,” said Guyn’s uncle, Thomas Muhammad. “It is only 45 minutes from his house.”

Guyn, who is running with Team Indiana Elite on the AAU circuit, recently picked up an offer from the Bearcats after visiting their campus, and he clearly liked what he saw.

“He got along with the coaching staff and the players; they showed him a lot of love,” Muhammad said.

Playing for Team Indiana Elite this spring on the AAU circuit, Guyn impressed NBE with his play in the Bob Gibbons’ Tournament of Champions as he did a little of everything against M33M Elite on the event’s first night. Guyn ran the floor well, finishing baskets in transition and finding streaking teammates for baskets of their own. Guyn has a good build and body and is a versatile perimeter player. He can shoot three-pointers from behind the arc and also get to the basket for finishes at the rim.

Guyn will do a prep year at Brewster Academy next season after playing at Scott County Senior High School (Ky.) this past season.

He was originally committed to Charlotte, but opened up his recruitment after almost immediately regretting his decision.

“I think he was star-struck after his visit,” Muhammad said. “He visited the Bobcats’ facility, and no one had ever treated him that well before. He called me after he committed and thought he made a mistake. He felt the same way a few days later.”

Despite offers and interest from several high-major schools, Guyn is somewhat underrated on a national level. As a result, his goal this summer is to make it clear he can make an impact in the Big East.

“He’s not one of the top-ranked kids, so he feels underrated. He belongs in the upper echelon of players,” Muhammad said. “He’s never been invited to LeBron or NBA camp, so he wants to show, you know, ‘I’m here.’”

Guyn joins 6-foot-5 wing Khristian Smith who verbally committed to UC back in April as 2011 verbal commitments to the Bearcats. Smith is also heading for a prep season after playing his senior season at Pike High School in Indianapolis, Smith heads to Maine Central Institute for the 2010-2011 school year.

DEJUAN MARRERO & A.J. HAMMONS ARE NEXT SPIECE INDY HEAT PLAYERS TO WATCH

2012 duo are hot commodities already among college coaches as July evaluation period readies to begin

BY JEFF BORZELLO

When watching Spiece Indy Heat on the AAU circuit over the past couple of years, most eyeballs were on top-five 2011 prospect Marquis Teague. If not, many were watching Purdue-commit Raphael Davis. However, it was hard not to notice the high-energy forward on the wing or the space-eating big man down low.

Now, those two players – 6-foot-5 DeJuan Marrero and 6-foot-10 A.J. Hammons – have built a reputation for themselves, becoming highly-touted rising juniors in their own right.

Amare Stoudemire is one of the most sought-after free agents in the NBA this summer, but he might not even have the most important destination decision in his own family.

That honor could go to his cousin, unsigned 2010 prospect Chris Hill, a 6-foot-8 swingman from Christian Faith Center Academy (N.C.).

Although Stoudemire went straight to the NBA and therefore never went through the recruitment process, he is consistently helping Hill.

Aaron Cosby commits to SHU and updates on Jarrod Davis and Michael Carey as their lists expand

BY JEFF BORZELLO

After making an immediate impact in the class of 2010, new Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard picked up his first 2011 commitment on Sunday, as Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.) guard Aaron Cosby chose the Pirates.

“They have been recruiting me the hardest over the past couple months,” Cosby said on Sunday. “My family and I had a stronger comfort level with the staff and the 2011 class will be a big class for that program, and they see me stepping in and playing right away.”

Cosby, a 6-foot-3 point guard originally from Kentucky, took a visit to the South Orange, N.J. campus this weekend and came away impressed.

CLASS OF 2012 INTRO: DEMARQUISE JOHNSON

‘Que Score’ on the rise in the 2012 national rankings

BY JEFF BORZELLO

When ESPN came out with its class of 2012 rankings early last week, there weren’t too many unknowns. One name, however, seemed to surprise several people: Demarquise Johnson.

“People were shocked when he was ranked by ESPN, even I was really surprised by that,” said Clint Parks, Johnson’s AAU coach with Team Eleate. “I mean, some of my friends in coaching texted me when the rankings came out; people were like, oh wow. We told them Que could play, but people would brush us off. A ranking doesn’t make you a player, but . . .”

Johnson, a 6-foot-5 ½, 175 lb. shooting guard from Westwind Prep (Ariz.), does not have much national publicity, but he is starting to garner attention after playing well at the NIKE Hoop Jamboree, Jayhawk Invitational and the Kansas Elite Camp this spring.

2011 PROSPECT TYLER HARRIS IS NOT JUST TOBIAS’ BROTHER ANYMORE

Tyler Harris in midst of four visits his week as recruiting accelerates rapidly, according to his father

BY JEFF BORZELLO

When former top-10 recruit and Tennessee signee Tobias Harris is your older brother, it is often difficult to follow in his footsteps. As a result, 2011 prospect Tyler Harris was often simply known as “Tobias’ brother.”

However, with his play on the AAU circuit so far this season, he is starting to build his own reputation.

“He’s right on schedule like Tobias,” said their father, Torrel Harris. “The difference between Tobias and Tyler is that Tobias is physically stronger. Tyler is growing so fast and his eating habits are starting to get better. Tobias, for two years, ate no junk, just good food. For Tyler, six months ago, his dinner was cookies and milk.

“Within the last three months, he’s realizing ‘this is my time now,’ and he’s eating three good meals, taking vitamins, working out three times a day. Once Tyler gets his strength, he’s going to be a major, major problem.”

MAURICE HARKLESS TO RE-OPEN RECRUITMENT

June 22, 2010 by · 1 Comment

BY JEFF BORZELLO

Ever since Connecticut was accused of several violations in late May by the NCAA, questions have swirled around regarding Maurice Harkless’ commitment to the Huskies.

On Monday, the 6-foot-6 rising senior from Queens, N.Y., officially decided to decommit and open up his recruitment.

“He really saw that he didn’t get a chance to explore all his options,” said Nate Blue, an advisor to Harkless. “We believe the investigation is bogus, so that had no bearing. He just wanted to open up some options.”

As recently as a week ago, Blue said he still expected Harkless to end up in Storrs, but the forward’s plans clearly changed.

Since Harkless announced his decommitment, Blue said he has received about 16 phone calls from schools in the Big East, ACC, Big Ten, Conference-USA and Pac-10. Blue added that Connecticut is still under consideration.

Don’t expect a quick decision the second time around from Harkless, either; the future South Kent Prep (Conn.) product is going to take his time.

“He just turned 17 years old,” Blue said. “He could be 6-10 in a month; who knows? But he’s going to play hard like he’s been doing this spring, and he’s going to take his visits.”

Another 2012 prospect originally from Canada hearing from plenty of colleges this week

THREE FAVORITES FOR JARROD DAVIS

June 17, 2010 by · 3 Comments

SEC, ACC and Big East represented on NJ 2011 small forward’s final list of three

BY JEFF BORZELLO

Although most of the top players in New Jersey are consolidated in the northern part of the state, junior forward Jarrod Davis has garnered plenty of high-major looks playing for Lakewood (N.J.).

On Thursday, he informed the NBE Basketball Report that he has trimmed his final list to Seton Hall, Tennessee and Georgia Tech.

“Those are my final three,” Davis said, before adding that Georgia Tech and Seton Hall have a lead right now.

He will visit Seton Hall this weekend, and also plans on seeing Georgia Tech before the July recruiting period and Tennessee before he makes a decision. With that said, though, he’s not afraid to pull the trigger on making up his mind.

“If I like one of the three while I’m there, I’m letting it be known I’ll commit,” he said. “Playing time as soon as I get there is a definitely a major factor. Also academics. Somewhere that can help and prepare me for life after basketball is over.”

Davis broke down what he likes about each school.

“Just all the staffs have great coaching staffs,” he said. “Georgia Tech coach [Paul] Hewitt has been recruiting me since last summer. He was at all my games; that meant a lot.

“And Seton Hall, another good coach in coach [Kevin] Willard, who was under coach [Rick] Pitino at Louisville and has a great staff alongside him with coach [Dan] McHale and Shaheen Holloway. I have been hearing from them a lot since they have gotten there and it’s close to home.

“And Tennessee coach [Bruce] Pearl contacted me himself; that meant a lot to me and they were one of the first schools to send me my first recruiting letters and stayed with me.”

Davis is looking to play in a fast-paced system where he can utilize his skills to their potential.

“The thing I like about all three, they play an up-tempo game, getting up-and-down and that fits me,” he said. “I love to run and I’m very athletic.”

Davis said he is not sure when he would like to end his recruitment.

“No timetable,” Davis said. “Whenever I feel the time is right, and I’m exact on my decision.”

SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD RECRUITING UPDATE

No surprise, top prospect in 2012 class hears from nation’s elite at first chance

by JEFF BORZELLO

One of the biggest bits of news in the class of 2012 yesterday surrounded Shabazz Muhammad, one of the top players in the country. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Bishop Gorman (Nev.) picked up an offer from North Carolina, adding the Tar Heels to a long list that includes Texas, Kansas, UNLV, UCLA, Louisville, Georgetown, Arizona, Arizona State, Washington, Duke, Memphis, Oklahoma and USC.

“It was cool, just talking to Coach Williams about how things are going, then he just said he would like to offer me,” Muhammad said.

Muhammad said that, outside of Kansas and USC, every school that has offered him made contact with him on Tuesday. “Everybody that I’m interested in has offered,” he said.

He also said that two schools are standing out in terms of recruiting him the hardest at this point. “Duke is starting to call a lot,” he said, “but Memphis been calling the most right now.”

Despite that, Muhammad has no favorites. “I’m wide-open at this point,” he said.
