BIG EAST teams extended the conference’s winning streak to 19 games Thursday before a buzzer-beater by Massachusetts against Providence brought an end to the run. Nonetheless, BIG EAST teams were 3-2 Thursday as St. John’s, Louisville and Villanova came away with wins.

The BIG EAST’s .871 winning percentage ranks as the second-best in Division I. The Pac-12 has a .920 winning percentage through Thursday to lead the nation.

—The Red Storm scored a road win against College of Charleston in the opening round of the Charleston Classic, sending St. John’s to a semifinal matchup against Murray State at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN3.

Guard D’Angelo Harrison led all scorers with 21 points in the win. Harrison has averaged 21.5 points in the first two games for St. John’s.

The Red Storm will face either Baylor or Colorado Sunday to conclude the Charleston Classic.

—Villanova rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime against Purdue before pulling away for an 89-81 win against the Boilermakers at the 2K Sports Classic. The Wildcats will face Alabama Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.

Guard Darrun Hilliard scored 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting to pace the Wildcats. For the game Jay Wright’s squad was 33 of 41 from the foul line and their 6-0 run to close regulation was scored all at the free throw line.

—Providence suffered its first loss of the season as Massachusetts scored on a tip-in by Terrell Vinson at the buzzer to snatch a 77-75 win in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. That sends the Friars to a 7:30 matchup against Penn State on ESPN3.

Bryce Cotton led all scorers with 23 points against Massachusetts. Cotton has played every minute of Providence’s first three games.

The Friars will take on either Akron or UNC-Asheville Saturday to close the action in Puerto Rico.
