D’ANGELO RUSSELL UPDATE: LIST LENGTHENS FOR ELITE ’14 SCORING GUARD
November 16, 2012 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
D’Angelo Russell has solidified his position as one of the lite prospects in the Class of 2014 at every stop on the summer and spring AAU trail and throughout a decorated high school and prep career. The current Montverde (FL) Academy standout completed the summer ranked #12 by NBE’s National Recruiting Analyst Brian Bosworth in the NBE Class of 2014 Post-July Top 75.
Russell has the complete skill package as a 6-foot-4+, 180-pound shooting guard. He can create off the bounce for himself and others. He is strong enough to get to the rim and finish through contact and he can hit the perimeter shot consistently out past the three-point arc. Russell is also not afraid to defend and will do so with effort consistently. While his goal is to win a national title with Montverde this season, he can’t help but look forward to his final year on the AAU circuit ahead where he will plans to either play with E1T1 out of Florida or All-Ohio Red closer to his home in Kentucky.
“Just how fast this experience is going,” Russell said of what surpises him the most of his AAU experience. He also enjoys the chance to compete and learn at top camps sucn as the NBPA Top 100 and Lebron James Skills Acadmy where he enjoys “gaining some information on how to be better on and off the court.”
This season Russell hopes to improve his athleticism to prepare him for the next stage in his playing career.
When asked about his recruitment Russell made a point to mention there are no current favorites and fired off a longer list than at anytime NBE has previously interviewed him. Russell specifically mentioned Ohio State, Missouri, Louisville, Indiana, Xavier, North Carolina State, Memphis, North Carolina, Florida, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Central Florida, Tennessee and Nebraska as schools involved in his recruitment at the current time.
While there are no favorites in his recruitment and Russell seems to be a ways off from making any sort of decision on a college destination, he did give NBE a glimpse into his decision-making process as to what factors may play the biggest role in his college decision.
“Being in a system where nothing will be given to me [and] I will have to earn it and a winning system,” he said of what he will look for in a college program.
NBE will continue to closely watch D’Angelo Russell this season and into the spring and summer as the dynamic Class of 2014 prospect will be one of the most heavily recruited players in the class. Stay tuned as it will likely be a very interesting recruitment with some of the top schools in America battling for this impressive backcourt talent.
