NBE BIG EAST REPORT: WEEK #1 (11/9/2012)

The curtain will rise on the 2012-2013 college basketball season today and for the BIG EAST conference it will also be the end of an era. With West Vitginia already leaving the conference for the Big 12 and Syracuse and Pittsburgh, who will be followed closely behind by Notre Dame, playing their last season before departing for the ACC, the BIG EAST as we have come to know and love will never be the same.

The conference will grow and survive with the additions next season of Memphis, Temple, Houston, Central Florida and SMU, but make no mistake about it, the dynamics of the tightnit conference have been changed forever.

There is a lot of basketball to be played in the mean time and things get underway tonight, with what is the ‘opening day’ of college hoops for the 2012-2013 season. Fourteen of the fifteen BIG EAST teams will be in action this weekend with the lone holdeover being St. John’s who will open their season next Tuesday as part of the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. Here is the schedule for the weekend:

Three BIG EAST teams are in action Friday against top-25 opponents on military locations in conjunction with Veterans Day weekend.

· Connecticut faces No. 14 Michigan State at 5:30 p.m. Friday on ESPN at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. It will be the first regular-season game between two U.S. colleges to be played in Europe and will be the head coaching debut for Connecticut’s Kevin Ollie.

· Marquette meets No. 4 Ohio State – a 2012 Final Four participant – aboard the USS Yorktown off Mount Pleasant, S.C., in the Carrier Classic (7 p.m., NBC Sports Network).

· Georgetown takes on No. 10 Florida on the USS Bataan off Jacksonville, Fla., in the Navy/Marine Corps Classic (9 p.m., NBC Sports Network).

The BIG EAST has four teams ranked in the preseason Associated Press poll – No. 2 Louisville, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 22 Notre Dame and No. 24 Cincinnati.

Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year
–PEYTON SIVA, Louisville, G, Sr.
Siva helped lead Louisville to the NCAA Final Four last year. He averaged 9.1 points per game and was fourth in the BIG EAST in assists with a 5.6 mark. He also led the Cardinals to the BIG EAST Championship title and won the Dave Gavitt Trophy as the tournament’s most outstanding player. A native of Seattle, Wash., Siva was named to the NCAA West Regional All-Tournament team last season.

Preseason BIG EAST Rookie of the Year
–STEVEN ADAMS, Pittsburgh, C, Fr.
Adams is a native of Wellington, New Zealand. He played prep school basketball at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., last season. A 7-foot freshman center, Adams was among the top 10 recruits nationally by several national recruiting services.
