STRONG 2015 CLASS IN DC AREA; BUT MARCUS DERRICKSON LEADS THE PACK

It has been quite a summer for Marcus Derrickson with Team Takeover DC. Playing with his AAU team as one of the elite programs in the 15U ranks he showed himself to be an elite player in the class. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward scored inside and out and even in the camp setting against players one and two years older at the Hoop Group Elite camp in July, he showed to be the best long term prospect NBE saw at the event.
Derrickson is a man amongst boys, even playing against older competition. Time and time again through the summer he toyed with defenders and at times looking his best as a facilitator from the post. Derrickson has the skill and strength to score at will from the block and the basketball IQ to get teammates involved by using his vision from the post to find shots for others. He easily played to his national top 10 ranking this summer and may even have room to move up as he is currently #8 in the NBE Class of 2015 Pre-July Live Period Top 15.
Derrickson physically looks like he could be entering his senior season in high school, not just his sophomore year. He cleaned the glass, played hard at both ends and had the range out to the NBA three-point range. A complete player that already has the top Mid-Atlantic programs making their early pitches for him and has helped make Team Takeover DC coaches hot targets to be added to college basketball staffs.
“Georgetown, Indiana, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Villanova, Rutgers, Miami, and some other schools that have talked to my coach,” said Derrickson at the recent Team Takeover event to close July.
It comes as little surprise to hear a Team Takeover prospect list Indiana. Hoosier coach Tom Crean has made a strong effort to recruit the DC area, specifically Team Takeover. With Victor Oladipo already on the roster, Crean made deeper inroads with the AAU power with the hiring of Kenny Johnson this summer from Towson. Johnson had previously worked both at Paul VI and Takeover as he moved up the coaching ranks. Shortly after his hire IU pulled a verbal commitment from Class of 2013 Takeover/Paul VI standout Stanford Robinson and Derrickson very well make visit Bloomington (IN) in the near future.
“It would be a good fit [for me] there,” he said of IU, “but I don’t know…I’d be good for a lot of schools so I’m just staying open minded right now and I’ m going to just keep playing and getting better.”
Not to be outdone by Indiana, Jay Wright and Villanova also reached into the Team Takeover family to fill a vacancy on their staff with Doug west leaving his position with the hiring of Doug Martin as an assistant coach. Martin comes to Villanova from the same Paul VI High School where Derrickson currently plays, with fellow 2015 highly regarded prospect Franklin Howard. At Paul VI Martin served as the associate head coach for the last three years. Like Kenny Johnson, Martin doubled as a coach with Team Takeover, recently working with their 16U team.
The recruitment of Marcus Derrickson is only just beginning and it is already being closely watched. The talented, but soft-spoken youngster is going to be in the spotlight over the next few years and NBE Sports is anxious to watch him and his Paul VI teammates this season in the WCAC where Derrickson says championship is the only goal. His recruitment will also be as hotly contested, so check back often and we will continue to follow one of 2015′s best prospects through the journey!
