While many around the nation were unfamiliar with Canadian 2014 prospect Marial Shayok, NBE National Recruiting Analyst Brian Bosworth was ahead of the curve, having the 6-foot-6, 190-poung CIA Bounce wing ranked #33 in the NBE Class of 2014 Pre-July Live Period Top 40. The secret is out…Shayok is now one of the hottest propsects in the Class of 2014 and college coaches have just begun to put their time into his recruitment.

In the recent Peach Jam event, Shayok showed his talents as an elite wing athlete. To NBE, Shayak was most impressive grabbing defensive rebounds and starting the fast break himself by taking off with the dribble. He flies up and down the floor and has excellent length to finish over defenders at the rim.

Earlier in the summer at the Rumble in the Bronx it was clear the talent Shayok possesses. He scored the ball from all three levels with ease and may have had even more impact defensively in CIA Bounce’s press. His length and lateral foot speed make him a potentially elite defender as well as a potential go-to option on the offensive end.

While Shayok certainly provided some highlights on the recruiting trail this summer, the highlight for him was an experience where not too many were able to see him in action.

“The highlight of my summer was probably my Team Canada experience, playing ball overseas,” he said.

Shayok competed with Team Canada in the FIBA U17 World Championship in Lithuania where they went 5-3 and Shayok averaged 12 points a game, good for second on the Canadian team. After returning to the AAU circuit with CIA Bounce in July, Shayok is looking forward to resting up now at the end of the month.

“I will be home resting finally and with my family for the end of July,” he said.

The reprieve from travelling the globe for basketball will also allow Shayok to catch up on his recruitment and see how much it has changed in recent weeks.

“I am hearing from Illinois, Ohio State, Boston College [and] Purdue the most,” he said. “I am not sure if any new schools have made contact because I have not been home this whole month, but this upcoming week I’ll find out.”

When college coaches were allowed to begin contacting players in the Class of 2014 on June 15th, one program made contact shortly after and left a very big impression on Shayok as he has been a big fan of a certain SEC program, that is also coming off a national championship.

Kentucky had contacted me a couple weeks ago and since I’ve been a big fan of that school for a while, I’d say they would be the favorites,” he said. “But, I am really considering every school.”

Shayok plans to make the move from Canada to a prep school in the United States, but at the time NBE Sports chatted with him on Monday, no such decision had been made. Since he has yet to choose a high school it is safe to assume his recruitment is also in the VERY early stages as college coaches are just really beginning to learn what type of prospect Shayok is. Even so, he does have a strong idea of what he will be looking for in a college when it comes time in the futre to make his decision.

“The most important factors in my college decision will be the situation the school is in so I am sure I’m at the right school at the right time,” he said.

NBE Sports will definitely keep in touch with Marial Shayok in the coming months as his recruitment is certain to expand impressively and we will also be sure to learn where he will be be putting his impressive basketball talents on display next season in the USA.
