TERRENCE SAMUEL PLANNING TO VISIT UCONN, PITT SOON

May 22, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Terrence Samuel has quietly been establishing himself as one of the elite point guards in the Class of 2013. After impressing NBE earlier this spring at the NJ Playaz Spring Fling and the Hoop Group’s Pittsburgh Jam Fest with the New Rens 17U AAU squad, Samuel will try and make his mark in a new environment this coming weekend playing for NY Lightning in the fourth and final preliminary leg of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League. it is not a permanent change for Samuel, just looking to get a different experience.

“Yeah I will be in Oakland with them,” Samuel told NBE of playing with NY Lightning this coming weekend. “I’m with New Rens. I’m just getting some experience on the Nike circuit, only temporarily.”

Samuel got his start on the EYBL with NY Lightning in the recent Dallas leg of the league. Despite the new surroundings he averaged over 8 points a game and shot better than 50% from the field in his five games. His steady hand at the point guard position allowed guards Dayshon Smith and Jonathan Severe to score the basketball at a high rate. Expect the guard trio to make some noise this coming weekend with some experience together under their belts.

Samuel helped lead New Rens to the NJ Playaz Spring Fling 17U Gold championship and NBE was once again impressed with his play at the Pittsburgh Jam Fest during the April open evaluation period for college coaches. Following the Spring Fling, where Samuel was named one of the Spring Fling’s Top Performers, NBE National Recruiting Analyst filed this scouting report on the 6-foot-4, 200-pound NYC guard:

Samuel arrived for his team’s first game a few minutes late and as soon as he got stretched out and came into the game everything changed. A chiseled 6’3” Samuel has explosive athleticism at the point guard position and really fuels a fast tempo for his club. He didn’t meet a defender who could keep him out of the lane and once there, Samuel makes terrific decisions with the ball. He has outstanding vision and is always looking to get an easy shot for a teammate. A true pass first point guard, Samuel has established himself as a priority for a host of Big East and national programs.

It looks like Bosworth’s prediction of Samuel becoming a priority for Big East programs and beyond is a realist. A couple BIG EAST programs are among new offers for Samuel and he hopes to visit both soon.

“New offers [from] UConn, Pittsburgh [and] Rhode Island,” said Samuel earlier this evening. “I will visit Pittsburgh and UConn soon.”

Other schools mentioned by Samuel to NBE this spring include Louisville, Cincinnati, Temple, Iowa State, Virginia, Penn State, Creighton, Dayton, Villanova, Kansas and Memphis. At this point Samuel, who attends South Shore HS in NYC, is planning to make a college decision sometime before the early signing period in November.

NBE’s Raphielle Johnson will be in Oakland this weekend for the fourth and final preliminary leg of the Nike EYBL. We hope to catch more of Terrence Samuel in action with NY Lightning, but if not, we will certainly see him on the AAU circuit with New Rens throughout the summer and will definitely keep our readers up to speed on his recruitment as it continues to grown rapidly as he cements his status as one of the top prospects on the East Coast in the Class of 2013.
