2010 BIG EAST RECRUITING CLASS RANKINGS

May 7, 2010 by · 4 Comments

On the recruiting trail the Big East is a conference that often flexes it’s muscle. With high-profile coaches such as Hall of Famers Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun, along with recruiting juggernauts Jay Wright, Bob Huggins and Rick Pitino, among others, the conference once again snags their share of top prospects in the class of 2010.

Below we rank the incoming recruiting classes of all 16 Big East teams for the 2010-2011 season. Even though the conference took some big swings and misses in the spring period there is another strong influx of talent entering the Big East next year. With another week of the spring signing period and more expected moves to come on the recruiting trail, this list could change slightly before classes begin.

Here are the rankings as of today…

1. Syracuse: One of the best recruiting classes in the country, the Orange bring in plenty of talent, led by elite prospects Fab Melo and Dion Waiters.

2. Connecticut: The Huskies have a well-rounded class, with good players, at least, at every position. They will need to play right away, especially Jeremy Lamb and Roscoe Smith.

3. Georgetown: Plenty of reinforcements are on the way for the Hoyas, led by the tandem of Markel Starks and Nate Lubick from the early signing period and Moses Abraham and Aaron Bowen this spring.

4. Marquette: The Golden Eagles have a large class, but three players that stand out are guard Vander Blue, wing Jamail Jones and JUCO Player of the Year, forward Jae Crowder.

5. Pittsburgh: The Panthers are going to be absolutely loaded on the perimeter next season, with the arrival of three four-star (in our opinion) guards.

6. Villanova: Despite Markus Kennedy reclassifying to 2011, the Wildcats still bring in Jayvaughn Pinkston and James Bell for immediate impacts.

7. Providence: Gerard Coleman can score and defend, Ron Giplaye is physical down low and Brice Kofane can block shots.

8. Louisville: Justin Coleman is an athlete extraordinaire, while Gorgiu Dieng is an impact player down low. Look out for Russ Smith.

9. Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish are going to have a more aggressive perimeter next season with Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins.

10. West Virginia: Noah Cottrill is a scoring point guard, and David Nyarsuk has the size and potential to be an impact player down the line. Bob Huggins also added a late addition in Darrious Curry to help on the wing.

11. South Florida: The Bulls will likely have to replace Dominique Jones, and Waverly Austin, Lavonte Dority and some spring JUCO additions will do their best.

12. DePaul: The Blue Demons have a solid class, led by point guard Brandon Young and Las Vegas native Moses Morgan.

13. Cincinnati: There are no Lance Stephensons in this class, but Justin Jackson is a long forward who should be ready to play and Kelvin Gaines is a potential defensive presence.

14. Seton Hall: Outside of Fuquan Edwin, it is not clear which players that are currently verbally committed will be on the roster in the fall. However, Edwin can really score. Anali Okoloji told NBE last week he has signed his LOI with the Pirates as Kevin Willard’s first recruit.

15. Rutgers: Gilvydas Biruta is going to surprise some people in the Big East, while Austin Carroll is a solid all-around guard. Newly hired Mike Rice has some openings for late additions so expect this class to grow by a couple.

16. St. John’s: The Red Storm added their first recruit under Steve Lavin this week, California jumping jack forward Dwayne Polee, an excellent late addition.
