Orange add 2011 guard out of Delaware to kick start ’11 recruiting

Syracuse’s roster is filled with players from all over North America: New York City, Texas, Philadelphia, Florida, Michigan, Canada, Maryland and New Jersey.

Soon, the Orange will add Delaware to that list, as 2011 prospect Trevor Cooney committed to the program on Friday.

“I felt the most comfortable with Syracuse as a school and also had the best relationship with the coaches,” Cooney told the NBE Basketball Report.

He chose the Orange over Notre Dame, West Virginia and Maryland, but also held offers from Villanova, Wake Forest, Virginia, Rutgers, Pittsburgh and Delaware.

Cooney visited the Syracuse campus multiple times, and enjoyed his experiences in upstate New York.

“[I liked] the history of it and also the Carrier Dome,” he said.

Cooney was also attracted to the Big East in general, saying simply that it is the “best conference around.”

A 6-foot-3 junior from Sanford School in Hockessin, Del., Cooney has a reputation as a shooter who can get hot and knock down jumpers from all over the court. However, he has improved his athleticism tremendously over the past year and has also added the ability to create his own shot.

He sees himself as a shooting guard who can play the point and run an offense if necessary. Cooney admits that he needs to improve on many things, saying that he is working on all parts of his game.

Due to his shooting ability, Cooney has a chance to make an immediate impact for Syracuse in two years.

Said Cooney: “I think if I continue to improve my game then yes I feel that I can be the player they want me to be.”
