BY PAT STEVENS – J.J. Moore and Shabazz Napier were two of the top performers leading their teams to wins as the 12th annual National Prep School Invitational rolled along for a third day on Saturday at the University of Rhode Island. South Florida’s Eric Skeeters was the lone Big East assistant in attendance.
-South Kent’s J.J. Moore (6-6 WF/Pittsburgh) led all scorers on the day with 30 points in a 70-69 win over the Canarias Basketball Academy of Spain. Russ Smith (6-1 PG/Louisville) scored 11 points as the two teams’ traded baskets down the stretch with South Kent eventually pulling away.
The Canary Islands’ Patrick Auda (6-8 C/BF) has drawn a lot of interest after his three games here where he’s posted double doubles in each. Against South Kent he had 24 points and 11 rebounds and look for South Florida to start recruiting him as he’s shown he can play at the level.
-The big Christian Life Center-Notre Dame Prep matchup went the way of the Texas boys, 91-77, and two of their frontline have Big East interest.
Chris Coleman (2011/6-10 C) is a Buffalo native and said he’d like to come home for college. He listed mutual interest with Georgetown, Syracuse and West Virginia, and listed Florida International as well after having backed off a summer commitment to them.
Jason Carter (2010/6-7 PF) played at Marshall HS (Houston, Tex.) last year and said he has offers to be a 2011 prospect for Louisiana Tech, Oklahoma State, Arkansas and Alabama, but also has interest from Georgetown, Marquette, LSU and Auburn. He is planning to be a 2011 prospect.
Ron Giplaye (6-7 PF/Providence) got the best of Kourtney Roberson (6-9 PF/Texas A&M) in their matchup during the first half. Giplaye blocked Roberson twice on one possession and again a few trips later.
Cleveland Melvin (6-7 PF/Connecticut verbal) gave the team a lift with his energy in the second half with two blocks, a follow-up dunk and a pair of baseline jumpers.
-Sunday’s Lawrence Academy-Northfield Mount Hermon matchup is one of the more anticipated of the event with both being uptempo teams and a pair of 2011 point guards set to battle.
Shabazz Napier did whatever he wanted in Lawrence’s 90-58 win over Massanutten Military Academy (Va.). He came away with 19 points and 14 assists despite an off day shooting from behind the arc.
Aaron Cosby ran the show in NMH’s 80-58 win over Bridgton Academy (Maine). He listed mutual interest with Stanford, Georgetown, Virginia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Saint Louis and Davidson.
-Proctor Academy (N.H.) made the trip for one game and Grandy Glaze (2011/6-6 CF) scored 17 points in an 80-70 loss to Maine Central Institute. Glaze listed South Florida, Minnesota, Saint Joseph, UNLV, West Virginia and Xavier as schools of mutual interest.
