NPSI DAY TWO RECAP

BY PAT STEVENS – St. Mark’s Nate Lubick (Georgetown) and Alex Murphy had big days along with St. Andrew’s Michael Carter-Williams who went for 36 points on the second day of the 12th annual National Prep School Invitational.
Assistant coaches in attendance included Rodell Davis of Providence, Craig Carter of Rutgers, Scott Adubato of Seton Hall and Eric Skeeters of South Florida.
-In one of the event’s featured matchups, Nate Lubick (6-8 PF/Georgetown) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for St. Mark’s and beat Winchendon, 80-78. With five seconds left, St. Mark’s inbounded from the sideline and Lubick sank the game-winner from the top of the key. He finished with 27 points on 12-16 FG (2-3 3PT) and seven rebounds in 32 minutes
Lubick visited Georgetown last weekend for the Duke game and also checked out fellow recruit Markel Starks’ game that Friday night.
St. Mark’s Alex Murphy (2012/6-8 WF) scored 27 as well, shooting 10-15 FG and 4-8 3PT.
For Winchendon, Markus Kennedy (6-9 PF/Villanova) had four points, nine rebounds and a block in 30 minutes. Angel Nunez (2011/6-7 WF) played just 12 minutes and was 1-of-8 from the field (0-3 3PT) while Khem Birch (2012/6-8 CF) had four blocks to go with nine points and four rebounds in 17 minutes.
-Brewster Academy took its third loss of the season and its second to NIA Prep of New Jersey, 73-72. The teams met at November’s National Prep Showcase and went to overtime whereas this one ended on a buzzer beater by NIA’s James Frazier.
CJ Fair (6-7 CF/Syracuse) had another solid day with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Maurice Walker (6-10 C) had 12 points and Naadir Tharpe (2011/6-0 PG) had six points and five assists to four turnovers.
Jammeer Hanner (6-8 PF) had 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead NIA. Shaquille Thomas (6-8 WF) finished with 10 points.
-Mountain State Academy jumped Ocean Academy right away to go up 36-15 at the half and ran away with the game, 64-44. David Nyarsuk (7-0 C/West Virginia) scored six points and had six rebounds while Anthony Bennett (2012/6-5 WF) scored 10 points.
Bennett said he’s feeling strong interest from Cincinnati, East Carolina, Connecticut, UNLV, Iowa State and Oklahoma.
-Heat Academy upset St. Thomas More, 69-64, as the big man matchup of 6-9 PF Waverly Austin (South Florida) and Andre Drummond (2012/6-11 C) never developed with Austin playing just 14 minutes and scoring five points while Drummond played 23 points and had six points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Bryon Allen had a team-high 16 points for STM.
-Michael Carter Williams (2011/6-5 PG/Syracuse) scored the current weekend high of 36 points in St. Andrew’s 92-83 loss to Westwind Prep of Arizona. Williams was 13-of-29 from the field (6-11 3PT/4-6 FT) to go with seven rebounds and three steals in a matchup with Tony Snell (6-5 PG/San Diego State).
Ricardo Ledo (2012/6-5 WF) had 11 points on 4-14 FG (0-5 3PT).
-6-7 PF Ron Giplaye (Providence) had 14 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes as Notre Dame Prep took a 44-20 halftime lead and extended it to 90-51 victory over Rise Academy of Philadelphia.
6-7 PF Cleveland Melvin (Connecticut verbal) didn’t play for the second straight game.
-Dashaun Wiggins (6-0 CG/Seton Hall commit) of Bridgton Academy scored nine points in a 75-58 win over the Canary Islands Basketball.
-Chris Coleman (2011/6-10 C/Christian Life Center) played just 10 minutes, picking up three fouls before finishing with seven points and three rebounds in a 74-65 win over Worcester Academy.
