ST. JOHN’S, WEST VIRGINIA ADD SIGNEES IN EARLY PERIOD

November 18, 2009 by NBE Blogger · 1 Comment

The early signing period for college basketball concludes today and a couple Big East programs have picked up signed letters of intent. While many are awaiting word from Tobias Harris and waiting to see how the Jayvaughn Pinkston situation will play out, St. John’s and West Virginia picked up signed letters of intents.

St. John’s is one of the schools involved in the race for Pinkston, it has looked more and more like Pinkston is heading in another direction. Today, the Redstorm have picked up a pretty solid alternative as Ronald Roberts of St. Peter’s Prep in New Jersey signed his letter of intent with St. John’s according to a source close to the situation.

Playing with the NJ Playaz on the AAU circuit, Roberts always impressed NBE with his ability to do work around the basket and showed the potential to expand his game away from the basket. He is a very solid pick-up for St. John’s.

Roberts confirmed the commitment to St. John’s this afternoon when reached by NBE’s Jeff Borzello. Roberts told NBE he chose the Red Storm over his other finalist, St. Joseph’s.

“Well, I really liked St. Joe’s a lot, but I loved St. John’s,” Roberts told NBE’s Jeff Borzello. “I loved the coaches, the players, the atmosphere, the facilities and the campus.”

According to the Charleston Daily Mail, West Virginia has also struck late in this early signing period as they added a signature from 7-foot-1, 230-pound Sudanese center David Nyarsuk.

Nyarsuk currently attends Mountain State Academy where he plays for Rodney Crawford, who played for WVU head coach Bob Huggins at the University of Cincinnati.

MSA’s Nyarsuk Gets WVU’s Last Hoops Spot (Daily Mail), joining Noah Cottrill in the Mountaineer class of 2010. With Nyarsuk taking the last available scholarship, on paper, from WVU in the class of 2010, it could be a sign they believe Tobias Harris is headed elsewhere when his decision is announced tomorrow. Although, WVU could have a scholarship open up if Devin Ebanks enters the NBA Draft after this season as most expect.
