Class of 2011 wing impressed with Connecticut track record of NBA wings

BY JEFF BORZELLO

Most of the top recruits in the country were busy visiting various campuses for Midnight Madness last weekend, but there was one key recruit not able to go anywhere – Angel Nunez.

The 6-foot-7 wing had to miss his scheduled visit to Connecticut for academic reasons.

“I didn’t make it,” Nunez said. “I had to take the PSATs. I really wanted to go; I heard it went really well.”

Still, the top 50 player in the class of 2011 plans on taking a visit to Storrs sometime in the near future.

“We haven’t set a date,” Nunez said. “My season is starting, their season just started, so it’s hard but I plan on visiting. One of our coaches, our AAU coach, tells me about all the players that went through there. He calls it ‘Wing U’ so it’s a good look for me.”

In addition to the Huskies, Nunez holds offers from Louisville, West Virginia, Indiana, Arizona, St. John’s, Rutgers, and holds heavy interest from Kansas.

Nunez is also nowhere near narrowing his list, or even limiting his recruitment to his current offers.

“I don’t have any favorites,” he said. “I like a lot of schools. Every school in the Big East, I like Connecticut a lot. Kentucky, I like them a lot too.”

Despite his busy schedule at Winchendon (Mass.), he wants to get out and see several of the schools recruiting him.

It’s hard,” said Nunez, who has already taken trips to Virginia Tech, St. John’s and Rutgers. “I want to go during a break, but I don’t know. We might go during November vacation, or Christmas vacation.”

Nunez is a unique player when it comes to his size and skill set. He is an athletic 6-foot-7 swingman who can shoot from the perimeter and get to the basket to finish in a variety of ways.

As a result, he wants to play in a system conducive to his talents.

“I’m looking for a school that already had players like me before – big guards,” Nunez said. “I want a school that has developed pros and can develop players like me.”

“I’m a two,” he added. “But I like to show that I can play multiple positions, I like to show my versatility.”

A New York City native, Nunez transferred prior to this season up north to the Winchendon School, a powerhouse in the New England area.

The program has plenty of marquee players, namely Villanova commit Markus Kennedy and several solid mid-major signees, led by Eric Ferguson (Georgia Southern) and James Stukes (Albany). 2012 prospect Khem Birch and Akeem Williams and Anthony Ireland, two 5-11 point guards, are also on the roster.

“We’re looking real good,” Nunez said. “We have some Big East guys. Our coach said it’s one of the best teams he’s ever had.”

In order to get playing time with all of the talent in the program, Nunez will have to continue to get better and shore up his weaknesses. Nunez will be the first to admit he has things to work on, too.

“I just want to get strong physically,” he said. “I want to learn how to play the game stronger. I have to work harder and become a better defender. I have to become an overall better player, a better rebounder. I need to play all game, be involved the whole game.”

If he improves in those areas, nothing will be able to keep him from going to any school that he wants in 2011.
