Kentucky native creating a buzz after reclassifying and transferring into NEPSAC

Every year the New England Prep School Athletic Conference has a wealth of basketball talent competing for its member schools. This season will certainly be no exception. While many of the players come from the towns and cities of the region, others come from all over the United States to prepare for college on and off the court in the true meaning of a prep school. One player who has seen his recruiting stock skyrocket following a strong July on the AAU scene, which included an impressive performance leading the Ohio Basketball Club U-16’s to the Best of the Summer Championship to close the July evaluation period, is Aaron Cosby.

Cosby is a 6-foot-2, 185-lb point guard in the class of 2011 who has re-classified to the class of 2011 and has transferred to Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts. Cosby comes to NMH via Jeffersontown High School in Louisville (KY) and is one of the players that has scouts buzzing in the 2011 class of prep basketball. NMH head oach John Carroll is very glad he chose to join the program.

“I knew he was a great scorer and have been really pleased with his approach to leading this team,” said Carroll. “He wants to be prepared to be the guy with the ball in his hands in college and he will get that at preparation at NMH.”

It is the transition to point guard that Cosby sees his ticket at the next level. Always impressive in his ability to score the basketball in a variety of ways, his adaptation to the point guard mentality is the next step in his development. He has seen the dividends the process is already paying.

“I’ve always been a scorer but since last year I’ve made the transition to point guard and that has taken my game to another level,” Cosby remarked to NBE.

The opportunity to play point guard against a higher level of competition to prepare for college is what the thought process was behind Cosby looking to leave home. Once he began to research possible destinations, be found the fit he was looking for at NMH.

“I wanted to get away from home, out of my comfort zone and be challenged both on and off the court to make the transition to college easier,” Cosby told NBE. “Also playing against the competition in New England will get me ready to play right away wherever I decide to go.

I chose NMH because it was the best fit for me [as] they already had big guys and shooters. All that was needed was a playmaker and that’s where I step in.”

It was not that long ago that Cosby was destined to play basketball in New England. Earlier in his high school career, Cosby made a verbal commitment to UMass and coach Travis Ford. However, when Ford decided to leave for the job at Oklahoma State, Cosby decided to reopen his commitment. Now, when college coaches hit the road today and for the next month recruiting, Cosby will be certain to see a fair share come to evaluate him as his arrival in the NEPSAC has been met with quite a bit of anticipation.

Pittsburgh, Penn State, Wichita State, Indiana, Oklahoma State, VCU, USC, Georgia Tech, Arizona, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Stanford, West Virginia,” replied Cosby when asked what schools are currently recruiting him. “I don’t have a favorite at this point [and] I’m open to all options.”

Cosby saw some of the Indiana campus this summer playing at their Elite Camp in July. He also plans to stop in at a couple other programs later this month as well to make unofficial visits.

“The only ones I have planned righ now are Pittsburgh and Penn State at the end of the month, I may visit both in the same weekend,” said Cosby.

NBE will closely monitor the developments of Cosby on the court and with his recruitment this season at Northfield Mount Hermon. It should be an excellent season ahead for Cosy, coach Carroll and the rest of the team as they will be a challenger in the NEPSAC Class A.
