Waverly Austin has had a productive summer and the recruiting interest in the 6-foot-10 big man continues to grow. After attending God’s Academy in Texas last season, Austin will take his game to Maine Central Institute in the NEPSAC.
“Everything has been good,” Austin told NBE this morning of his summer. “I [have] been working a lot, getting ready for the season.”
Austin told NBE that he currently holds offers from South Florida, Cincinnati, Florida International, Temple and George Washington. Other Big East schools that are showing interest include Louisville, West Virginia and Marquette.
“Georgetown is still looking at me hard,” he added, as well as “Texas A&M and Maryland and Virginia.”
Austin is planning to visit Cincinnati, but is unsure of the exact date, and “probably” West Virginia. He expects to see WVU and UC come visit him at MCI and also Hoya head man John Thompson III has indicated he will pay Austin a visit once school is underway.

The basic skill in basketball is still to put the ball in the basket. This summer, playing with Cecil Kirk on the AAU circuit, Baltimore (MD) native Durand Johnson impressed many college coaches with his ability to do just that from the perimter.
Standing about 6-foot-5 and weighing in at about 185 pounds, the former Parkville High School star has the size on the wing and attitude of a pure shooter that many colleges will find a place for in their line-up. he showed the ability to fire away from three-point range this summer and it caught the attention of many high-major programs.
“Schools recruiting me aggressively are Pitt, UConn, Georgetown, Florida State, Virginia Tech [and] Maryland,” Johnson told NBE over the weekend.
Johnson also has scholarship offers from many in the Atlantic 10, including Xavier, UNC-Charlotte, Rhode Island, Temple, St. Bonaventure as well as “some other ones” from different conferences.
Next up will be scheduling visits, which at this time Johnson is unsure of, and whittling down his list.
This coming season, Johnson is taking his game to Lake Clifton High School as a member of the 2011 recruiting class, which will up his stock tremendously.

Playing with Fabricio de Melo at Sagemont School in Weston (FL), 6-foot-6 class of 2011 small forward Rod Days got plenty of face time this spring with college recruiters coming in to check out the 7-foot Brazilian. With ‘Fab’ Melo off the board and committed to Syracuse, Days will give college recruiters another reason to come back to Sagemont in the future.
While watching Days during the Peach Jam this past July, NBE was impressed with his basketball IQ and feel for the game. He was also very effective using his length and athleticism on the defensive side of the basketball.
Currently, Days told NBE that he is hearing from South Carolina, Wake Forest, Stanford and Miami the most while Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State and Boston College have become involved since the start of July. He has previously visited South Carolina, Connecticut, Louisville, Miami and Florida State.
“I really liked all the schools,” Days said of the visits. “I would like to visit Wake Forest and Stanford.”
Days has a good idea of what he will be looking for in a college when it is time to make a decision in the future.
“I look to see if they play the type of style I play, if there are good coaches and if I like the campus feel,” said Days.
