July 27, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
Jeff Borzello wrapped up NBE’s coverage from Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex of the 2009 AAU Super Showcase on Sunday in Lake Buena Vista (FL). The action was pretty exciting throughout the day, although the number of games were pretty low. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from the day that was…
———-
- The quarterfinals of the 17-U Gold AAU Super Showcase had the following match-ups:
Rising Stars Gold vs. Nike Baltimore Elite
Each 1 Teach 1 vs. Westchester Hawks
NJ Celtics vs. Team Takeover
NY Gauchos vs. Houston Hoops
- The buzz in the early morning as the games began still centered around Kyrie Irving and the NJ Celtics, which was predominately the St. Patrick’s High School team, minus Michael Gilchrist, and their run into the Quarters. On Saturday, the boys from Jersey beat BOTH All-Ohio Red, in pool play, and Team Final in the 1st round of the playoffs. In the first round win over Team Final, Irving scored 37 points, hitting 20 of 20 from the foul line.
- The first recruiting update of the day game via Justin Miller, 6-foot-1 guard out of Rockbridge (MO) and playing with the St. Louis Eagles. Miller told NBE that all the MVC schools are involved along with Iowa State, Iowa, Missouri, Virginia and Connecticut had placed a call following the Peach Jam.
- The NY Gauchos/Houston Hoops game had an exciting finish. After Tobi Oyediji converted an old fashioned three-point play following a Gaucho turnover with 11 seconds left, Houston was up 61-59. The Gauchos turned it over again on an offensive foul call on Doron Lamb. Alex Kirk then made one of two free throws and Houston Hoops took the win, 62-59, when Lamb’s desperation three was off the mark.
Kirk scored 18 for Houston Hoops and Lamb finished with 14.
- Jason Morris, playing with the Gauchos, updated his recruiting list for NBE. Clemson, Stanford, Georgia and Georgia Tech are the scholarship offers he is currently considering.
- Houston Hoops would move on to meet Team Takeover with Each 1 Teach 1, minus Brandon Knight, take on another surprise team, Rising Stars Gold, in the semifinals later this afternoon.
- Houston has an impressive line-up with LJ Rose, J-Mychal Reese, Alex Kirk, Tobi Oyediji, Julien Lewis and Brandon Peters.
- With Doc Rivers watching, Austin Rivers helps Each 1 Teach 1 keep it close, trailing 32-29 at halftime against the Rising Stars. Back and forth game that saw Rising Stars take a 5-point lead into the fourth quarter, 50-45, but Each 1 Teach 1 erased it quickly with a 7-2 run and the game was tied at 57-all with 3:15 left.
Rivers was knocking down some impressive threes and his team held a three-point lead much of the way home until and Alex Rossi fade-away beat the buzzer and sent the game into OT.
Another deep three by Rivers gave Each 1 Teach 1 a 72-71 lead, but the Stars got a tip-in to go back up one with 23.5 seconds left. A Rivers runner off the glass proved to be the game winner with 7.3 left as the Rising Stars missed a three at the buzzer.
- Ravonte Rice of Champaign (IL) Centennial has played well this weekend with the Rising Stars. Following their 73-72 loss to Each 1 Teach 1, Rice told NBE Kent State, Ohio, Oregon State, Western Michigan, Illinois State, Eastern Illinois, Akron, Miami (OH), Nevada, DePaul, Drake, St. Louis, Niagara and Detroit where the most seriously involved with additional interest coming from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Boston College, Missouri, Northwester and Stanford.
- Houston Hoops leads Team Takeover 34-32 at the half of their semifinal contest.
- With the Expressions Elite 2010 and 2011 squads playing on adjacent courts, we see St. John’s, Connecticut and Boston College keeping an eye on both games. The 2010 Expressions team has Tyler Olander and Rod Odom while Alex Murphy, Imoh Silas and Ricardo Ledo are definitely players of interest with their 2011 squad.
Jim Calhoun was also watching the Expressions teams play.
- Houston Hoops stretched their lead to 48-42 after three quarters over Team Takeover.
- An 11-2 run has given Team Takeover a 61-54 lead with under one to play. They finish Houston Hoops off for a 63-58 win and a Monday date with Each 1 Teach 1 for the AAU Super Showcase championship.
- Team Takeover wing Victor Oladipo gave NBE his school list of Indiana, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Providence, George Mason, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Clemson, UNC-C and Missouri after the contest.
- Team NJABC and the St. Louis Eagles 16’s had a host of familiar faces watching the action, including Jay Wright (Villanova), Tony Bennett, Chris Collins of Duke, Jeff Capel, Fran Dunphy, Billy Donovan, Jim Calhoun and Pat Sellers of Connecticut, Bill self and an assistant, Mike Anderson, Book Richardson from Arizona and assistants from Seton Hall, Illinois and Arkansas, from what we could see.
- Roosevelt Jones had 14 in the first half and Bradley Beal added 13 as St. Louis was up 42-27 at the break. Shaq Duncan had eight for NJABC.
- Beal, an elite 2011 shooting guard prospect from St. Louis (MO) Chaminade High School put on another show for the coaches who were watching. Following the game he told NBE he has a collection of offers from schools such as Kansas, Florida, Illinois, Purdue, Missouri, Minnesota and Wake Forest. Duke, North Carolina and Arizona also show a lot of interest.
- In a game being televised, Team Final and Baltimore Elite play a game that had the intensity of an exhibition game and was brutal to watch at times. Team Final won, 69-51. West Virginia had an assistant watching Team Final shooting guard Trevor Cooney closely.
- NBE will turn our attention tomorrow to the Desert Duel at Mesquite High School in Gilbert (AZ). The two-day event promises to be exciting as they have drawn teams such as Mac Irvin Fire, Memphis Magic, DC Assault, Seattle Rotary, NJ Playaz, Team Detroit, Atlanta Celtics and several other elite programs. Check back often tomorrow for our live updates as the July open evaluation period for NCAA Division 1-A coaches heads into the home stretch.
