ORLANDO AAU SUPER SHOWCASE NOTES (12:30 PM UPDATE)
July 25, 2009 by NBE Blogger · 1 Comment
Jeff Borzello is down in Orlando following the action of the AAU Super Showcase. He was watching the action in the 16-U age group Thursday around Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex and play began in the 17-U age classification on Friday and has continued today. The college coaches from around the country are also making their way in from Vegas and the familiar faces in the stands watching the players will certainly increase as we head into the weekend.
Lets take a look at some of the notes and observations that Jeff has sent our way…
12:30 PM Update:
- LJ Rose told NBE he has offers from Texas, Memphis and Oklahoma with interest from Kentucky, Wake Forest, Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma State, UCLA and Arizona.
- Shane Larkin has offers from UCF and VCU with Clemson, Florida State, St. Joe’s, Marquette, Florida, Miami, South Florida, George Mason and FAU showing interest. He will take an unofficial visit in August to Miami.
Saturday, 12:00 PM:
- Team Final defeated Hoop Planjet this morning in a 17-U Gold pool match-up, 105-53. Head coaches such as Buzz Williams (Marquette), Andy Kennedy, Jay Wright (Villanova), Billy Donovan, Jeff Capel and fran Dunphy were on hand along with assistants from UMass, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and South Carolina.
- Yesterday Kyrie Irving was playing with the NJ Roadrunners, this morning he was out there with the NJ Celtics and helped them to a very surprising win over All-Ohio Red this morning.
- Some pool play notes: City Rocks are 0-2, Team Takeover is 2-0, as are the Illinois Warriors. Team Final is 3-0. Houston Hoops and Westchester Hawks, in a match-up of 2-0 teams, face off at 2:45.
3:45 PM Updates:
- A Providence assistant is here keeping tabs on 2010 commitments Gerard Coleman and Ron Giplaye as they play with BABC. The PC staff deserves kudos for locking this pair up early, both are very underrated recruits.
- The Georgia Blazers have some young talent in their program that should be fun to watch in the next couple seasons. Kentavious Caldwell is a top tier 2011 prospect and has Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Georgia and Florida on his list.
Going way out, in the class fo 2013, Brannen Greene, a 6-foot-3 guard, already has Florida State, Virginia Tech and Xavier showing interest and 6-foot-7 Chris Walker has Florida State, LSU, Virginia Tech and East Carolina.
- CP3 All-Stars has 6-foot-5 wing PJ Hairston, a class of 2011 prospect out of Dudley HS in Greensboro (NC). Hairston told NBE he has offers from Memphis, Wake Forest and Florida with North Carolina, Georgetown, Boston College, Clemson, Indiana and Duke showing interest.
Hairston’s AAU teammate Dezmine Wells out of Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh (NC) tells NBE today that he wants to play in a “Big East-type style” as he wants a program where the guards are aggressive and they get out and play. At this time, Wells, who is a 6-foot-3 guard, has offers from NC State, Oregon State, BC, Miami, Virginia Tech and Xavier with interest coming from Wake Forest, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Villanova.
2:00 PM Update:
As mentioned in the previous update, Notre Dame had an assistant checking in on Alabama Challenge vs. Illinois Warriors. Following the game, Alabama Challenge small forward Ralston Turner of Muscle Shoals (AL) told NBE he has offers from Butler, LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and Notre Dame has offered. The 6-foot-5 class of 2010 prospect also has interest from Ole Miss.
Speaking of the Irish recruiting, Doug Ferguson, who is in Vegas, filled NBE in last night on the current recruiting of Glenbrook (IL) North 6-foot-7 forward Alex Dragicevich of Full Package Althletics and Chicago Elite, who was 3-0 in their poll at the Adidas Super 64. NBE learned that Utah, Notre Dame, Xavier, Miami (OH), Wake Forest, Colorado, Rhode Island, Loyola (IL) and Oregon State were on his current list. The feeling is an Irish offer (which some report has been made) would be coming VERY soon.
1:30 PM Updates:
- Baltimore Elite has Syracuse commitments Bae Moussa-Keita and C.J. Fair in action. Their uncommitted teammate, Jonathan Graham, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Calvert Hall in Maryland, listed offers from Providence and Seton Hall with interest from Villanova, Maryland, West Virginia, VCU, Miami and Georgia Tech.
- Jeremy Lamb, the 6-foot-4 shooting guard that raised his profile trmendously with a huge performance at the recent Peach Jam has developed a strong following. Playing with the Georgia Stars, the Norcross (GA) standout told NBE he has a bunch of offers and can’t remember all the new ones. Off the top of his head he mentioned Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas and Richmond.
- Notre Dame has an assistant positioned to watch the match-up between the Alabama Challenge and Illinois Warriors.
- Among the noticeable sights of the Super Showcase thus far has been the number of coaches and the increased following for Jeremy Lamb.
- coaches and spectators were treated to a treat with this morning’s Team Takeover – Jax Lee Bulls contest. A back and forth affair that saw Patric Young help the Bulls take a 10-point lead, but Jerian Grant and Victor Oladipo led a comeback by Team Takeover to get the win. The game was intense and heated at times…showing a passion that we are hearing has been lacking in the Vegas games…
10:30 AM Updates:
- One of the more impressive players viewed on Thursday was Mount Vernon guard Jabari Hinds, playing for the Westchester Hawks. After his contest, Hinds gave NBE an update on his recruitment as the rising junior (class of 2011) has offers from James Madison, Louisville, Seton Hall, Virginia, UNLV and Oklahoma State. He is also receiving interest from West Virginia, Ohio State, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt and Marquette.
- Michael Gilchrist will be getting plenty of court time this weekend in Orlando playing with the Team Final U-16 and U-17 squads. Assistants from Kentucky and Seton Hall were watching him on Thursday. With the U-17 action getting underway today, that crowd will grow rapidly following Team Final.
- After the Peach Jam, Villanova-commit Markus Kennedy and Team Final parted ways. Kennedy is now playing for the Hunting Park Warriors according to a source with the Team Final program. Kennedy did not play in the last three games of the Peach Jam.
- Savon Goodman, a 6-foot-5 wing in the class of 2012, is playing with the Team Final U-16 squad. He told NBE that Kansas, Penn State and Villanova as the schools involved currently in his recruitment.
- Team Takeover with Jerian Grant, Victor Oladipo, Mike Gbinije, etc are facing the Jacksonville Lee Bulls, who have Stacey Poole, Patric Young, etc. Tom crean, Sidney Lowe, Bobby Lutz, Pittsburgh assistant Tom Herrion and an assitant from Virginia Tech are among the coaches viewing this game.
- City Rocks versus SC Ravens has Duke assistant Chris Collins. Fred Quartlebaum of St. John’s and an assistant from Connecticut, too.
Tobias Harris, who continues to show the much improved handle and passing ability, along with the toned physique, is, as usual the main attraction. Big man Brice Kofane is also drawing some of the interested observers. He is known to hold a few ‘block parties’ and that caught the attention of coaches at the Peach Jam and some are taking a follow-up look here in Orlando.
- Several coaches have moved over to the Metro Hawks vs. Georgia Stars contest, including John Calipari, Crean, Tom Herrion and assistants from Rutgers, Boston College and Georgia Tech.
