July 14, 2009 by NBE Blogger · 1 Comment
Jeff Borzello is back at the Riverview Park Activities Center Tuesday morning for the Nike Peach Jam as the battle for playoff spots heat up down south. Once again, the college coaches are turning out in droves to check in on the action as we begin to wind down the first leg of the July evaluation period. Throughout the day, Jeff will be provided updates from North Augusta (SC) on the latest news, notes and his observations as he scans the crowd to see what colleges are watching each game.
Also, Doug Ferguson has made his way to North Augusta as well and will be providing additional updates as well…
11:00 PM (Jeff): A couple final recruiting notes from the Peach Jam before I make the trip home to Long Island tomorrow…
- Kevin Johnson, 6-foot-8, 235-lb center for Cali Supreme in the class of 2011, told NBE tonight that he is going to visit Texas next month. He also has USC, Oregon State and UCLA involved.
- Trevor Cooney has a current list that reads Syracuse, Villanova, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Virginia, Ohio State, West Virginia, Rutgers, Delaware and Maryland. The 6-foot-3 class of 2011 shooting guard out of the Sanford School and Wilmington (DE) had 20 points in Team Final’s rout of Cali Supreme in tonight’s quarterfinal.
8:00 PM (Jeff): The semifinals are all set for the 17-U Peach Jam.
All-Ohio Red vs. City Rocks
Team Final vs. Team Florida
In a rematch of the Rumble in the Bronx final in one quarterfinal contest, Team Final routed Cali Supreme 92-77. Trevor Cooney and Rakeem Christmas scored 20 points each while Gary Franklin Jr. led Cali with 20.
All-Ohio Red used a dominant second half to pull away from Each One Teach One, 56-40. Jared Sullinger had 21 points and 8 rebounds while Austin Rivers scored 10 for Each One Teach One.
City Rocks held on to beat Louisiana Select, 75-73, behind another outstanding performance from Tobias Harris, who finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
Team Takeover was the only undefeated team in pool play, but that meant little in the playoffs as Team Florida got 21 points and 8 rebounds from Florida State-bound Okaro White in a 60-59 win. Jerian Grant had 22 points for Team Takeover in the loss.
We will have some recruiting lists a little later…
3:45 PM (Jeff): Apharetta (GA) guard, Shannon Scott, is a class of 2011 player to watch. Connecticut, Syracuse and , Georgetown got a mention from the Big East by Scott in his chat with NBE, along with just about the whole ACC and Alabama.
3:00 PM (Jeff): Here are the 17-U plauoff match-ups for this evening…
All-Ohio Red vs. Each One Teach One
Louisiana Select vs. City Rocks
Team Final vs. Cali Supreme
Team Takeover vs. Team Florida
2:45 PM (Jeff): Class of 2012 Nerlens Noel out of Everett (MA) High School is playing with the BABC U-16 squad here at the Peach Jam. The 6-foot-9 youngster tells NBE he would like to play in the Big East or ACC in college. He has 15 schools sending him stuff and he mentioned Connecticut, Syracuse, Kansas, Memphis, Indiana, Providence, Wake Forest and Miami.
2:30 PM (Jeff): Class of 2011 shooting guard Carlton Brundidge has been having a good July. The powerfully built 6-foot backcourt performer out of Smithfield (MI) told NBE this afternoon that he has visited Michigan and Michigan State and would like to visit Miami, Iowa and Syracuse this summer.
2:00 PM (Jeff): Pool play is over for the 17-U teams. Here is a look at some of the statistical leaders through the 5 pool play games:

1:15 PM (Jeff): A couple more recruiting notes…
- Westchester (CA) High School School small forward Dwayne Polee told NBE he is still verbally committed to USC at this point in time. He had committed to the previous staff led by Tim Floyd. Polee mentioned he has some interest in Arizona and UNLV and will make a final decision by summer’s end.
- Melsahn Basabe had a strong Hoop Group Elite camp and he has picked up 11 new offers since, including one from St. John’s. The 2010 forward attends St. Mark’s School in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference and has played well at the Peach Jam, too.
12:45 PM (Jeff): Coaches such as Jim Calhoun (Connecticut) and an assistant, Norm Roberts (St. John’s), Bill Self, Jeff Capel, Oliver Purnell, Al Skinner and several major college assistants are being treated to a good one between All-Ohio Red and the NY Gauchos.
Aaron Craft misses a front end of a one-and-one with Ohio up two. Shane Southwell scores a bucket, plus the foul to tie the game at 70-all with 16 seconds left. However, he misses the free throw.
Adreian Payne is fouled, misses front-end of one-and-one. Ball back to Gauchos.
Craft fouls Doron Lamb on a three-point attempt. Lamb hits two of three and the Gauchos hold on for the victory.
12:30 PM (Jeff): Looks like Louisiana Select will end Cali Supreme’s undefeated run, leading by 13 in the second half.
12:17 PM (Jeff): Team Final is looking to be hitting their stride. They are routing Boo Williams by 20 right now.
12:15 PM (Jeff): Team Takeover finished pool play at 5-0 and All-Ohio Red and Cali Supreme are hoping to do the same with wins in their last pool play match-ups.
Cali Supreme has erased an eight-point deficit and look poised to do just that…
11:45 AM (Jeff): Here are a couple recruiting notes…
- Kyle Wiltjer is a class of 2011 6-foot-9 big man out of Portland (OR). He listed the entire Pac 10 as well as Kansas, Florida and Kentucky as schools of interest. He has been to in-state Kansas and Kansas State as well as Florida for their elite camp.
- Brice Kofane caught our eye early on playing with City Rocks. The 2010 big man, standing 6-foot-8, attends the Miller School in Virginia. It will be interesting to see if his recruitment picks up some more after his play here. Currently he is listing Harvard, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Wake Forest, Virginia and Miami.
11:27 AM (Jeff): Jerian Grant, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard here with Team Takeover, out of Dematha High School near DC, told NBE this morning that Notre Dame, Providence, Villanova, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Virginia and Virginia Tech are the schools recruiting him. He hopes to visit PC, Okla State and UVA in August.
11:15 AM (Jeff): Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers is here, watching his son Austin, who had a little bout of food poisoning last night.
11:00 AM (Jeff): Elite 2011 forward Michael Gilchrist continues to try and push the notion that he is wide open in his recruitment and wants to be recruited, distancing himself from the reports it is already a Kentucky vs. Villanova race for his services. He also wants to visit some schools this summer, but has not decided which schools.
10:37 AM (Jeff): Oakland Soldiers off to an early 19-10 lead of Seattle Rotary, who continues to struggle here at the Peach Jam.
10:22 AM (Jeff): Norcross (GA) shooting guard Jeremy Lamb is acquitting himself quite well here in North Augusta witht he Georgia Stars and the 2010 prospect is likely to see his recruitment rise dramatically following the evaluation period as he has been one of the leading scorers of the event so far.
Lamb told NBE today that Clemson, Connecticut, VCU and Florida State are in the mix right now.
10:15 AM (Jeff): Yesterday, a Facebook profile update appearing from Marquis Teague had the internet a buzz as it teased a commitment had been made, but no school was mentioned.
last night, NBE’s Doug Ferguson learned from Todd Henlsey of the Spiece organization and Teague’s mother that there had not been any commitment made, nor is one forthcoming.
Teague confirmed that this morning after Spiece Indy Heat got past the Jackson Tigers.
“I didn’t write that, one of my friends did,” stated Teague.
As for his recruitment, the class of Indianapolis (IN) Pike standout says he is wide open, but will like to commit before his high school season gets started.
Louisville, Ohio State, Indiana, Wake Forest, Purdue and Kentucky are the schools he is currently thinking about.
10:09 AM (Jeff): Georgia Stars rallyed from 12 down at the half to beat I-5 Elite. Spiece Indy Heat also won their early game.
9:40 AM (Jeff): Gold-medal winning head coach of the USA U-19 team Jamie Dixon (Pittsburgh) has strolled in with phone to his ear and grabbed a bunch of score sheets. This is Dixon’s first appearance on the recruiting trail since arriving back in the US from New Zealand.
9:35 AM (Jeff): First games are at halftime. Team Florida leads NY Playaz by 10. I-5 Elite is up 12 on the Georgia Stars. Spiece Indy Heat leads by 10 on Jackson and Team Texas leads St. Louis Eagles.
9:22 AM (Jeff): Spiece Indy Heat and the Jackson Tigers are drawing a crowd of coaches in the early going here. Of course, Marquis Teague, the electric 6-foot-2 point guard out of Indianapolis (IN) Pike is a main draw with Spiece. He is in a good match-up with 5-foot-9 Andre Stringer out of Jackson (MS). Coaches are also getting an early look at 2012 small forward DeJuan Marrero out of Gary (IN) with Spiece as well.
Mick Cronin (Cincinnati), Roy Williams, Kevin O’Neil and John Beilein are all here with Louisville, Washington, LSU, Colorado, Tennessee and Kentucky having assistants watching.
