PEACH JAM: OPENING DAY

July 13, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment

The annual Peach Jam, put on by NIKE, got underway in North Augusta (SC) at 9 AM this morning and, as always, the college coaches came in droves for the invitation-only event. Just 24 17-U teams and 16 in the 16-U classification receive the cherished invitations and each game seems like a top match-up on the AAU scene.

Jeff Borzello was at the Riverview Park Activities Center, a gorgeous facility, bright and early for the action and here are some of his recruiting notes…

- College coaches turned out in droves today. Just a sampling of the head coaches Borzello spotted: Tom Izzo, Ben Howland, Mark Fox, Brian Gregory, Johnny Dawkins, Travis Ford, Paul Hewitt, Sean Miller, Josh Pastner, Jeff Capel, Lorenzo Romar, Bill Self, John Calipari, Billy Donovan, Mike MOntgomery, Thad Matta, Coach K, Tony Bennett, Dino Gaudio, Craig Robinson, Bruce Weber, Chris Mack and others.

- Out of the Big East, Keno Davis (Providence), Bob Huggins (West Virginia), Mike Brey (Notre Dame), Norm Roberts (St. John’s, Stan Heath (South Florida) and Jay Wright (Villanova) were seen by Jeff at games he was watching and an, at least, an assistant from every other Big East schools was spotted somewhere today.

- Speaking of Big East assistants, Brandin Knight of Pittsburgh was getting an early look at Doron Lamb and the NY Gauchos.

- Jason Morris, the athletic wing from the Hotchkiss (CT) School and Georgia native is here with the Gauchos. After their early game, Morris told NBE that Clemson, Georgia Tech and Stanford are the three schools mainly involved in his recruitment at this time.

- Pinecrest (FL) elite point guard Brandon Knight is here after taking the first half of the evaluation period off. Playing with Team Florida, Knight told NBE that he is wide open with his recruitment, but is hearing the most from Duke, Kentucky and Florida.

- Seattle (WA) Garfield’s Tony Wroten is a prized commodity for the entire Pac 10, but the highly rated 2011 guard prospect maintains he is seriously interested in the Big East and mentioned Louisville, Villanova, Seton Hall and St. John’s as he would like to see some of what the east coast has to offer.

- Wroten’s Seattle Rotary teammate, 6-foot-9, 275-pound big man Josh Smith told NBE that the entire Pac 10 has offered him and Louisville, Texas, Syracuse, UNC, Duke “and schools like that” have as well.

- Keala King, who has impressed NBE each time we have seen the Compton (CA) wing this spring and summer, mentioned Stanford, Arizona, Cal, Oregon State, Kentucky, Connecticut and Washington as those in play in his recruitment.

King went to the Stanford elite camp and visited USC. His top four currently are Stanford, Arizona, Oregon State and Kentucky.

- Dayton (OH) 6-foot-9 Aderian Payne told NBE he is considering offers from Dayton, Xavier, Arizona, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Michigan State and interest from Florida and Connecticut.

- NBE’s favorite player from the LJSA and King City Classic, Phil Pressey, is doing work again here in North Augusta. The complete point guard listed Connecticut, Florida, Baylor, LSU, Arizona, UCLA and Missouri as the schools on his list.

- Gary Franklin Jr. gave NBE a list of Washington, Cal, Stanford, USC, Connecticut, Arizona, Baylor and Oklahoma. Franklin was committed to USC before Tim Floyd resigned and has re-opened his recruitment.
