REEBOK ALL-AMERICAN CAMP UPDATE IV

July 10, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The coaches continued to stream into Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon into the evening to check out the action in the Gallagher Athletic Center on the campus of Philadelphia University as the Reebok All-American Camp rolled on.

The day was highlighted with talk in the stands of a couple commitments and rumors of a de-commitment that possibly could involve a Big East recruit.

Through it all, Matt Whitfield and Jeff Borzello continued to try and track down the latest information for NBE readers. Let’s take a look at some of the latest news and notes…

- Earlier today NBE reported on the possibility of Nate Lubick De-committing and Tyrone Garland Committing to Virginia Tech. Lubick has been committed to Georgetown, but a rumor was circulating through some of the college coaches on hand Wednesday night that a de-commitment could be forthcoming. On Thursday, it picked up legs and a source with knowledge of his recruitment told NBE that “he is re-opening his recruitment.”

At this point, NBE has not been able to reach anyone with the NE Playaz, Nate Lubick himself or his father, who is also his basketball coach at St. Mark’s School. However, a source close to the Playaz AAU program indicated tonight that Lubick IS still committed to the Hoyas.

We do hope to get to the bottom of this tomorrow when we see Lubick and the NE Playaz at the BasketbBull First Eight event at the Mass Mutual center in Springfield (MA). Stay tuned…

- The other breaking news today did come to fruition as Tyrone Garland did commit to Virginia Tech at a 5:15 PM news conference, backing up what he told NBE earlier in the day. Garland was receiving interest from Rutgers and Seton Hall from the Big East.

- The other commitment actually was made public on Wednesday night, but caused much buzz among coaches and the media on Thursday. Although some reports indicated a commitment was not made, NBE caught up with the player and, emphatically, Chris Coleman Confirms Commitment to FIU.

From the Big East, Connecticut, West Virginia and Syracuse from the Big East had offered, according to Coleman.

- Another source tells NBE that Brentwood (NY) High School small forward J.J. Moore will transfer next season to South Kent (CT) School. South Ken is a very popular destination for NYC-area players.

- Sterling Gibbs laid out the status of his recruitment a little more clearly for NBE on Thursday afternoon. According to Gibbs, he currently holds offers from Indiana, Pittsburgh, St. John’s, DePaul, Rutgers and Seton Hall. Schools such as Villanova, Oklahoma, Virginia and Virginia Tech have been showing serious interest.

Gibbs has been to Pitt and ‘Nova and would like to see DePaul, Indiana and Oklahoma. He did not rule out return trips to Pitt and ‘Nova, either.

Gibbs made a point to say he is wide open and, contrary to previous interviews with NBE and other outlets, he said there is no leader at this time.

- Ryan Rhoomes of Benjamin Cardozo (NYC) High School indicated that St. John’s leads for his services. Others interested in the 6-foot-8 junior who originally played at Middletown South (NY) High School include Providence, Rhode Island, Georgia Tech, Villanova, George Mason and Long Island.

- Tyreek Duren, a 5-foot-10 point guard from nearby Neumann-Goretti High School and the Team Final AAU program indicated that the schools currently recruiting him are Miami, Virginia, UMASS, VCU, LaSalle, Temple and St. Bonaventure. He has not been hearing from Providence of late.

- Other coaches that made sure they were seen late this afternoon included Josh Pastner, Jay Wright of Villanova, Fred Hill of Rutgers, Al Skinner, John Calipari and Tom Crean.

- Jabari Hinds, a class of 2011 lead guard from Mount Vernon (NY) has offers from Louisville, Seton Hall, UNLV, Virginia and James Madison. Other Big East schools showing interest in Hinds include Marquette, West Virginia and Connecticut.

- Kyle Anderson Sr., the father of 2012 Paterson Catholic shooting guard Kyle Anderson, gave NBE a list off the top of his head of the schools in touch most often in the early stages of his son’s recruitment. The schools were Georgetown, Kansas, Pittsburgh, LaSalle, Texas, Miami, Rutgers, St. John’s, Kentucky and Indiana.

- After being front and center for his newest recruit, Tyrone Garland, Seth Greenberg joined a large coaching contingent that also consisted of Fred Hill, Norm Roberts and Billy Donovan watching Jaylen Bond, Kyle Anderson and Jabari Hinds, among others.

- On the other court, Bob Huggins had arrived and with one of his assistants he was looking very interested in the action that included Ashton Pankey, Victor Oladipo, John Jackson and class of 2011 standout LeBryan Nash.
